Stamford, Ct 2010 Firefighter Exam

14 posts in this topic

I just wanted to pass it along to anyone of the 600 people that took the written Stamford, Ct Firefighters Exam in 2010 that there is some talk of throwing out that list. I, myself am NOT involved in this testing process in any way. However, I think it is wrong to throw out a test that many put a lot of effort into.

As a result, I am just passing on some information for those that might be involved that there is some discussion and possible legal acton being taken.

If you might be interested or are concerned maybe you should check into it. I know if it was me I would.

Go onto "Facebook" and you should be able to get further details under "Stamford 2010 Firefighter Candidates".

Through no fault of your own, if you took the time to take this exam. the City may try to throw it out. I think that is Wrong, but its not up to me.

Best of Luck in your interest in becoming a Career Firefighter

How could there be legal action on something that is just "some talk"? If there is legal action, it must be more then just talk.

I think I said there is "SOME" discussion and "POSSIBLE" legal action being taken.

I guess my standards are a bit higher. I might have sourced the information a little before posting a rumor like this.

Thank you NFD2004 for starting this thread, just to followup on what you posted

Some of us who took the exam have started a Facebook group : "Stamford 2010 Firefighter Candidates".

We've started this group to come together to try and force the City of Stamford to move things along with certifying the exams, creating a list and filling the empty spots on SFRD.

If you took the exam please join our group; and/or if you know someone that did, please pass along

Jay24,

Has there been any action by the city to vacate the list?

Jay24,

Has there been any action by the city to vacate the list?

From the City Of Stamford personnel minutes posted to the city's website:

4. P28.061

REVIEW; matter of reimbursement for applicants of the fire service exam (held approximately two years ago).

REPORT MADE

The Committee held a lengthy discussion regarding the fire exam that was held about two years ago. Mr. Hibson explained that the list was never certified. Certification involves final scoring and ranking of candidates. Once the list is certified, it expires after two years. He is not going to certify it until issues surrounding the budget, the Fire Plan and the Fire Union Contract are settled.

The Committee members stated that it was unfair that those that took the test were charged $35 and then no hiring took place. Chair Fedeli explained that if the test-takers are refunded the $35, then their name will come off the list. If the list is certified, they are not entitled to the $35. Mr. Layton suggested that perhaps they could be given the option, and Mr. Hibson felt this would be extremely burdensome on his department.

Many representatives felt strongly that a decision should be made in the near future regarding either scoring the test or refunding the money. Therefore, Chair Fedeli agreed to keep this item on the Pending Agenda for further review.

Upon motion duly made and seconded, the Committee voted 6-0-0 to reconvene on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at 6:45 to vote on Item No. 2 above.

Hope this answers your question

Sounds like the City has no real plan. Does CT civil service law govern this or what?

I'd have to look into this a little more before answering

I haven't seen it personally, but I'm led to believe that Civil Service regulations state something to effect that the list will be established as quickly as possible. Not very specific - but you'd think 2 years exceeds that requirement

I heard from a couple of sources that they didn't want to certify the list because that starts the clock running on the 2 year length of the list.

What I didn't realize until recently was that there are minimum manning levels in the SFRD contract. Not only those on duty per group / shift but also assigned to a group. The Local has started a grievance process regarding this, and other matters but that obviously takes time to come to a resolution. In addition, as mentioned here, a group of us that took the test are considering what options we have to move things along.

Does anyone know how many Firefighters Stamford is short? How many could potentially be hired?

I have heard that SFRD are 12 short of Min staffing, and as April 2012 another 5 have notified the union that they plan to retire
