The South Main Firehouse was built in 1888. RJR Bricks. What a Pool Table. It was GREAT.

The one on Shawnee woke me up way too early with smoke in my apartment, up the block. Here's my video:

Skywarn is active on the local Westchester amateur radio frequency (147.060 MHz) of the Westchester Emergency Communications Association. Hams are encouraged to report hazardous weather conditions. NOAA in Upton monitors - I was net control for the ARRL Southern District Net tonight. Non-hams may report to Skywarn by using this form:

I can see transformers popping off south of me, in the area of Cross County, now that winds are really picking up.

NYC has about 44 battalions. That's 28x YFD battalion contingent for 42x the population in NYC. However, NYC is only 15x the land area, so that leaves YFD battalions responsible for a much larger geographic area, comprised of hilly, rough roads coupled with a strong call volume. I'm sure that the grand plan here was thought out well enough by people who know the needs and conditions of the vehicles.
.....and the powers that be wanted to drop down to 1 battalion. I'm sure getting to a run in Colonial Heights and then back for the next run on South Broadway woulda been no problem.......ugh, stupid politicians....

Some discussions have been about putting a LEO in each school - who pays for it? In the end we do. I suggest get our soldiers out of other countries that do nothing but kill them dozens at a time and station one in each school.
Better yet do more to care for and determine mentally ill people.
    JMO
Now on a different note, I hope a fund is established to provide years of mental health counseling for everyone in the school. It's really scary to think of how things can turn out 10 - 15 years from now.

It's already been well articulated how devastating this whole event has been to everyone, especially family (i'm not a parent and cant even begin to imagine how i would feel if i was).
The media, generally speaking, as been horrendously irresponsible throughout this entire event. After i left work Friday evening i have made it a point to stick only to what the CSP PIO relays during briefings. As it relates to the interviewing of children, i was equally nauseated at the media (that they would hover over these vulnerable children like buzzards) and the parents for allowing their children to be interviewed. If it was me, i would secured my child, drove straight home (barring having to make any official statements to the authorities), and unplug every TV in the house. If you didn't think the media was driven by the almighty dollar before, you sure should now.
From where i sit, the gun discussion is a secondary, if not tertiary, issue. The real failure here seems to be the mental health system and more generally how this society views / deals with mental health issues (i'm not just talking about whatever the perp was suffering from but even combat vets w/ PTSD often find themselves ostracized and treated as "broken").

I'm still wondering why these clowns haven't gotten a few new ones ripped by the state for heaven knows what shenanigans they have pulled. I did have an interesting experience recently while driving into work. I'm coming off of 17 and onto the Thruway at Woodbury or Harriman, or whatever that toll booth is. I see a bus behind me, L&S. I don't think anything of it, and happily herp a derp my way down the Thruway. I see the bus in my rear view, still responding to whatever. I still don't think anything of it. They finally pass me at the TZ and that's when I see the Hatzolah markings. I catch up to them somewhere in Yonkers, and follow them all the way into the city. Mind you, this is what, 40, 50 miles?? I see them getting off the Deegan at Van Cortlandt Park South. The first thought that went through my mind was, "What, they don't have a bus available in Riverdale.??? Such a thing.

As someone who is relatively new to the "amateur" radio scene, as well as a member of WECA -
We do maintain a public safety liaison with DES. I am far too new to know the details of how that unit responds to emergencies, if at all. I will check on it and get back to you all.
Ham radio is still a growing hobby, and there are many opportunities within to gain experience in emergency radio communications, such as RACES, ARES, Skywarn, and even MARS. WECA hosts a training session at the County Center every month that includes these topics, and others such as military communications, digital radios, etc. The folks there are very knowledgeable, and come from a wide variety of backgrounds - including public safety.
Most hams are well aware of proper operating procedures (we have to take a very detailed test to get a license) and would never interfere with public safety communications on any level. I wouldn't quite call it paralleling - perhaps redundancy
Please contact me if you have any questions about amateur radio or its role in public safety.

There was a system, what I was told by senior men, was the following as I best remember it. The first number was from 1-7 and ran from West to East along the Southern border of Yonkers. The second number was from 1-7 and ran from South to North along the Western border of Yonkers. The last two numbers were within each area but not sure of how they were assigned. e.g. Box 1124 would have been in the Southwest corner of the City, Box 7124 would have been in the Southeast corner etc. Before we had CAD or even mapbooks on the rigs, the Box number could give you at least and idea of the area of the City the alarm was in (especially if the normal first due company was already out). There were also special boxes for Schools, etc. memory is faded but I believe schools began with 19 could be mistaken. One of the guys (an A/C) still on the job has a comprehensive listing of the information, probably why Jamie said to PM him. Hope this helps somewhat.
  20. bronxfireradio liked a post in a topic by SteveOFD in Digital Vs Analog
In my opinion the main reason an agency goes digital is because a radio sales rep sold them on the idea that they need to go digital to meet an FCC deadline for this or that regulation. Currently the main FCC deadline for Part 90 (Land Mobile Radio) radios is that these radios meet narrowband requriements by January 1, 2013. Most radios manufactured after the mid 1990's can meet this requirement by programming. Narrowbanding just means theat the radio will transmit in a narrower portion of spectrum thatn wideband.
A more in depth explanation can be read at Daryl Jones' Weblog. A portion of this article follows:
Digital radios can be more efficient in utilizing limited radio spectrum by utilizing error correction technology. Encryption is another feature that is available with digital radios. Some agencies have been sold digital radios with the assumption that they could not be heard by scanners. This is not true, APCO P25 digital, which is the digital format the Federal Government has accepted as its digital radio standard, can be scanned with a digital scanner. Digital scanners are considerably more expensive than conventional (analog only) scanners.

not to get off topic here but i have seen a few posts that disturb me. to the posters here that are volunteer firemen and are not cops, you are entitled to your opinion but you sound pretty stupid commenting on police procedure and how we do our jobs when you now NOTHING about it. From you locations on your profiles you guys live where crime really isn't a problem but here in the real world cops have to use every tool in our arsenal to get the job done which most times isn't the easiest task because liberal morons who worry about civil rights and the 4th amendment make our job more difficult than it already is.
I'm sure this will be deleted by the admin or i will catch hell from the other posters for this but I think it had to be said.
