First of all most people that join to be volunteers do so when they are somewhat young, including myself, and losap means absolutely nothing to them when they are 18. Most people do it because they want to do it.
I have NEVER heard a volunteer say I can't wait to get an suv, I can't wait until I retire so I can collect, or any other "perk" you people are mentioning. P.s
I have been volunteering for 11 plus dedicated years. Its never been about perks for me or any other dedicated volunteer I know.
I come on this site and see a bunch on NON volunteers knocking us for incentives to keep dedicated members active. Im all for it.
When I was an officer our captain would reward the top 3 responders in our company gas cards as an incentive and guess what?... it worked. For all of you vollies stay dedicated, train hard, and stay safe

Well here in Elmsford the water was more like waist deep then ankle deep and also the area was not an evacuation zone. Ill still go with removal but was a little more then skipping through ankle deep water.

While I am no longer a parade person any longer I do recall seeing a career dept 3/4 million dollar ladder on the opposite side of the county for a parade with its vollies, being driven by a career member. So it may be practiced alot more by volunteer departments but is not exclusive to volunteer departments.
  5. Fireman488 liked a post in a topic by ladder55 in Parade Coverage?(Non rhetorical)
Actually the department im referring to is a career Dept. There are a handful of vollies that do nothing. The driver is career and was on overtime. Rediculious? Its only rediculious when vollies do it.

Here's my thoughts, what about police chiefs getting their own cars? What about dpw formen getting their own truck? Plenty of vehicles out there without any markings on them doing whatever they feel. Oh add in their enormous salaries and free gas etc. Do u still see a problem with a volly chief using his car to go food shopping in the next town?
Oh and just to add this in so its not so one sided, I know career chiefs that have a take hone vehicle with lettering that they run errands in. Just saying

Wcm259 ever been on a ship? If a fire breaks out on a ship who do you think puts it out? They don't have career firefighters. They have everyone thats on the brigade drop what they are doing to put out the fire. This is what's called volunteer firefighters.

Gpeifer im a dpw worker. If someone came to MY job and offered to do it for free yes it would upset me, but if there were municipalities that have always used volunteers to do my job it doesn't affect me at all. I volunteer in a 100% volunteer fire dept. We have never had any career positions so therefore nobody's job is being taken away.

I agree, this has been going on now without a bill. You have to know what your boss will allow and what your responsibilities are. I know many f/f's who are allowed to leave their jobs now for BIG fires, not the everyday automatic alarm, but a big worker. Many village employees allow f/f's to leave work. I know a village where the 3 man sanitation truck is all f/f's and lets this truck go to the fire house on alarms. This is not a busy village fire call wise but they do what they have to do.
In Nassau County ALL county workers get fire day hours, meaning if a large worker or other serious emergency happens, they can take time off from their next scheduled shift. This is used when they are off...so this would cover the other post about someone at a fire all night then have to report for a day shift and operate a bulldozer. No one takes advantage of this, and it has been in place for decades.
There are just some people who always want to chime in on the negative side whenever it is a volunteer issue. But I understand to many it's buisness not personel..it's a union thing and its all good, I understand that, but sometimes it seems they really go out of their way to try and find negatives all the time.
Good news is these people will be long retired, and the Volunteer Fire Service will still be responding to alarms!

Again I haven't heard anyone say there isn't a problem, and it must be frustrating having family members living in a district that bad. Just a suggestion sir, have your loved ones attend a village/town board meeting and tell their concerns. It may help a lot more than this
  16. ladder55 liked a post in a topic in Firematic Coverage During Parades?
I agree that this is a reality and not a fantasy, but unless you personally want to go to these districts and drive the meat wagon, its going to take time. In that time a lot may happen. So like I suggested to the other gentleman if this was my family I would bring it up ASAP to a local official not sit at your computer and talk to people from all over the country on how bad it is. You seem to want the discussion to continue on here to get everyone going
  17. ladder55 liked a post in a topic by FFLieu in Firematic Coverage During Parades?
The fact that I am on the inside of such a volunteer department, with inside knowledge with respect to this rather beaten issue, should be specific enough.
  18. ladder55 liked a post in a topic by gamewell45 in Firematic Coverage During Parades?
Flynn, as a suggestion, why don't you contact the chiefs of the departments for the information you need rather then ask for it in this forum? It's quite possible that the people in here don't have all the information that you need or they could end up giving you the wrong information without knowing it.
  19. ladder55 liked a post in a topic in Firematic Coverage During Parades?
My fire Dept. Has sign up sheets put up for members attending and members who will be available for runs. As soon as the parade we are attending ends we return the apparatus back to our district and back in service
If the members wish to stay they can. Is that enough information to get the ball rolling for the next series of questions?

at 2:30 in the afternoon on a monday how many firefighter do you expect can show up??? try and factor in how many of these people are working , or dedicated to some other issue in their lives ??? THAT IS WHAT MUTUAL AID PLANS ARE DRAWN UP FOR give them a break. christ even my department had a lil bit of a hard time getting the engine out but we provided sufficient manpower to mohegan. Given the time of day and that no one was home we all (meaning all the dept.'s that responded) , and where the fire started and how it traveled made one hell of a stop on that house and to all the members of this site that are members of the departments that responded to that fire you/we made one good stop guys good job!!

I believe in a past thread someone had tried to contact WCDES about the TRT with zero response. Since when is asking questions repeatedly DEMANDING?(your words) So you are trying to tell me that this forum is not the place to ask these questions about the team but yet there seems to be many guys on here that talk the talk about what this team can do. You know what Ladder55, you are right, this is not the place to ask about the county TRT. Maybe if we don't talk about it or ask any questions it will go away. Thanks for YOUR opinion on this.
