Maybe could it be people are to drunk to find their cars, so they are setting off their car alarms to find them.

just had 4 guys from Detroit Fd in last week not a lot of surround and drown, more like 3 - 5 fires a shift and get your ass kicked. And for no money, and now no city pension. More like a 401-k. Shame what the city has done to that dept. And you don't try to be a firefighter for a couple of years, it isn't like buying a car to see if you like it.

    1) They can, but only if the VAC's agree to it
    2) They will still have to do side work, because they are already doing 40 hours. If they work more than that they get overtime and that may bust the bank. Yes they will have to hire more.
    3) Thats the single biggest reason we have not had consolidation in any emergency services.

All forget that the villages I'm talking about are in the the Town od Greenburgh. As we all know village resident pay for ALS service why can"t they pay for a EMS service. Jared from Greenburgh Police has done a great job running his side of ALS/BLS Fly Cars. Why can't Greenburgh run the whole show. Then the Greenburgh Paramedics won't have to do side work for Ossining,Portchester, etc. If Greenburgh sets up area stations in vacant lots or purchase EMS buildings ( like IVAC which owns the building ) they could hire more EMTs/Paramedics. I have researched and done the numbers it could work. My main concern is with the village my family lives in and then the other villages surrounding us.The IVAC board members must go and a cleaning of the house must happen. Afyer talking with some members in IVAC there main problem is within the 4 walls. There seems to be a power struggle there which in turn effects the residents of Irvington

Thankfully, I live in Ossining and for the most part we are well protected in both EMS and FD. Yes, most of the EMS calls are covered by paid EMT"S and Medics but there are still some volunteers riding the night shifts to keep costs down. With two crews on most of the time we can cover our calls and with the additional resource of the Tri-Town flycar we are in good shape in Ossining, Croton and Briarcliff Manor with regard to EMS. This has been a festering problem for many years in Westchester. Call volumes have increased at an unbelievable rate. It was not uncommon just 10 years ago for an entire 12 hour shift that no calls came in to OVAC..now its more likely to have 12 calls in 12 hours with many double headers. Funding has been tough some tax districts have been created but I think that instead of creating a seperate tax for EMS it should be included in either school or property tax lines to perhaps lighten the load. A point made about many EMS professionals doing dual duty to make ends meet is valid. These lifesavers need to be paid a living wage. In many cases they are not. The County gets involved in amusement parks, useless beaches on the Hudson river and other areas that are FAR LESS IMPORTANT than EMS.

I like the discussion here. But I have yet to really hear from any department (other than one) that is really interested in putting all of our heads together to work towards the same thing.
Firefighter safety, survival and rescue training is near and dear to me. I firmly believe the additional 24 hours of FAST training should be tacked on to the Firefighter I & Survival classes the WCFTC puts out. I also can't comprehend why survival training and rescue of our own is not minimum training for all of us. To make it a separate program and not make it required training STATEWIDE irritates the living hell out of me.
What further irks me is that guys walk out of the training center, carrying their Firefighter I certificates (most not take Survival, thanks WCDES) and never again take a course to better themselves in the interest of all those that they will be working with.
Survival and Firefighter Rescue Training needs to be a requirement - period, end of story.

Yes, John, practice with your Mutual Aid FAST team. In fact practice everything you do, including a mayday prior to the arrival of that FAST. Review the OSHA requirement that a FAST team must be in place when two persons are operating in an ILDH.
Also come up with a written policy or procedure for establishing FAST prior to the arrival of a FAST company.
If you want to prove a point to the naysayers try this. At one of your live fire drills, secretly tell one of your company officers that at 1 minute into the evolution to call a SIMULATED Mayday for his company saying the building has suffered a partial collapse and his company is trapped and injured under the collapse. Surprise the IC with this twist in the scenario and see how it is handled.

I've been giving something a lot of thought lately, and decided to post it here for discussion.
There's quite a few departments in Westchester running FAS Teams (or RI Teams). Rarely, unless I am wrong, do any of them train with each other or the department's they routinely run with.
I'm thinking that maybe it's time for those of us running these teams to perhaps get together and start working together towards a common practice. I think we all pretty much use the same equipment, require the same training and have the same mindsets on how we should do our jobs.
Firefighter safety is a very serious topic to me. I've been thinking of ways to increase our safety in my own department, and started to think about ways to help all of us get on the same page - or close to it.
Please note this isn't a debate about how they should run, etc. I just want to open up the discussion of other departments in the WC interested in starting to work together towards - dare I say it - a more standard approach to all of this FAST stuff we do. It all starts with every firefighter recognizing and knowing what to do to avoid / get out of trouble, and maybe as a united voice (all of us running FAST's) we can start helping our own avoid ever needing us.
Just food for thought - I'm more than willing to work on this and to use our station to play host for meetings / training.
    Thanks for reading.

I remember that day very clearly in a different way, my other sister calling me in the wee hours of the morning telling me that Mike got killed, my first thought was he got shot, it never occured to me that he got killed fighting a fire. I remember getting to his house and 3 of the kids were home, Jamie was in Rockland county playing softball, I took Michael (the oldest son) for a walk and had a talk with him, then sitting around the house watching Nick and Jen (6 and 3 at the time respectively) playing having no real idea that their dad was never coming home again, calling my brother in Michigan telling him the news. Then sitting in on the planning meetings with the Brewster FD so my sister Janet wouldn't have to. I remember that I talked with the members of my family that were in the fire service and to our Chief (I was serving our dept as 1st asst chief at the time) telling them that I can't do this anymore and that I was quitting the fire department and most of them felt the same way all the way to our family in Michigan. Then at the wake that was open to everyone at the middle school I went outside for some air (alright to be alone & cry) I saw what you see in no other walk of life, that huge sea of blue, cops & fireman from all over the tri state area and realized that I could never walk away from this and the best thing to do was to stick it out and try to do everything I personally could to keep this from happening again. When the funeral was over and we were trying to get back to the "new" normal I spoke with my Chief Bill Vlad about starting a FAS Team, the Chief not only gave me his ok but told me to do whatever I needed to do and to get whatever I needed to make this happen, so was the start of one of the first FAS Teams in Westchester and still one of the best in my opinion. Yes like my son said Mike "Satch" was a hell of a guy, anyone that knew him would have to agree he would do anything for you anytime. Mike and I had so much in common, both officers on the FD (my second time through the ranks), both of us police officers and both of us loved the same girl. It goes without saying that I miss you Mike and although you are gone from us here on earth you are still with me each and every minute of every day. Because of this incident I have made many great friends at the Brewster FD and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation where my wife and I go every year to volunteer for memorial weekend. We were so moved by the weekend in 1998 when Mike was one of the honorees that we had to get involved. RIP Brother we love you and miss you and I know that you will be there in March in spirit for Jamie's wedding. I know when I close my eyes that day I will see you walking her down the aisle with that huge Satch smile.

Twelve years ago today, June 22nd, Lt. Michael Neuner died in the Line of Duty fighting a house fire with the Brewster Fire Department in Putnam County. Mike was a Police Officer in the City of Peekskill, a former member of the Putnam County Sheriffs Department, Armonk and Patterson Fire Departments. My Uncle Mike was one of the funniest, coolest and nicest guys to ever walk this earth.

We remember you today and every day, Satch. You may be gone but you'll never be forgotten!

Please DO NOT buy a 4 wheel drive unit. Your area is pretty flat, (hell, one area in Mamaroneck is called 'the flats!'), and your PD and FD have about, what, 6 4 WD SUV's you can use in the rare heavy snow incident that your DPW has not cleared. It will be $7000, plus way more wear on front end, brakes, tranny every time you start and stop. I know you do not pay for maintnence, but it will be your down time. If you can document 4 incidents of stuck ambulances in MEM's 40+ year Hx, I would be surprised. (Yea, I know it was MFD Rescue for some of those years.)
Are you allowed to count trade in $$$ from your old truck, or is the Amb Dist/Town laying claim to that money. You may get $10 to $20,000 trade value on your old unit.
You do NOT need a HUGE model. Don't get box envy with the neighbors. Better a real good small truck than a stripped big one. Small trucks= easier to train drivers, less intimidating to the soccer moms that squads should be courting= more drivers, fewer dings, smaller blind spots, shorter stopping distance.
Gas versus diesel, eh. Both have good and bad. Chevy VS Ford, same deal. All being =, go with the cheapest.
As for modifier, I don't think PL custombody can be beat in customer service. My vol squad (Somers) and the squad I work at a lot (Yorktown) has had good customer service, etc. BTW If Somers and Yorktown, in the NW Hills don't get 4WD, you don't need it either.
