    CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES: AL
    * Physical data
    1. Atomic weight: 26.98
    2. Boiling point (at 760 mm Hg): 2327 degrees C (4221 degrees F)
    3. Specific gravity: 2.70 at 4 degrees C (39 degrees F)
    4. Vapor density: Data not available.
    5. Melting point: 660 degrees C (1220 degrees F)
    6. Vapor pressure at 1284 degrees C (2343 degrees F): 1 mm Hg
    7. Solubility: Insoluble in hot or cold water, concentrated nitric acid, and hot acetic acid; soluble in hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid and alkalies.
    8. Evaporation rate: Data not available.
    * Reactivity
    1. Conditions contributing to instability: Contact between aluminum powder and ignition sources may create a severe explosion hazard. Because it is strongly electropositive, aluminum corrodes rapidly in contact with other metals.
    2. Incompatibilities: Aluminum is an extremely reactive metal. Contact between aluminum and acids, caustics, combustible materials, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and strong oxidizers should be avoided.
    3. Hazardous decomposition products: None reported.
    4. Special precautions: Aluminum may corrode in contact with other metals.
    * Flammability The National Fire Protection Association has assigned a flammability rating of 1 (slight fire hazard) to aluminum (dust or powder).
    1. Flash point: Data not available.
    2. Autoignition temperature: Data not available.
    3. Flammable limits in air: Data not available.
    4. Extinguishant: Do not use water, carbon tetrachloride, or halon to fight fires involving aluminum. Control small fires with sand, talc, or sodium chloride. Dry chemical or carbon dioxide extinguishers are also acceptable. Fires involving aluminum should be fought upwind from the maximum distance possible. Keep unnecessary people away; isolate the hazard area and deny entry. Containers of aluminum may explode in the heat of the fire and should be moved from the fire area if it is possible to do so safely. If this is not possible, cool fire exposed containers from the sides with water until well after the fire is out, but be careful not to get water inside containers. Stay away from the ends of containers. Firefighters should wear a full set of protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus when fighting fires involving aluminum.

    Do lots of deadlifts, squats and kettlebell swings. If you can afford it go to a CROSSFIT affiliate...if you can't follow their workouts as best you can on the crossfit.com website. Cardio is OVERATED, take a run through the woods every now and then or jump on stairmaster with a waited vest once or twice a week. Also climb ropes and do lots of pull ups and push ups...when you get tired do some more. Eat natural food..don't eat processed crap made in a science lab. Follow this advice and you will be a beast at the academy.

    I don't think you understand exactly what I'm talking about. If you have a minute look up crossfit on youtube. Any serious crossfitter would have no problem climbing 6 flights of stairs and going to work. I rarely run but when I do I still post ridiculous times. Crossfit is fast becoming the workout program of choice for military special ops and emergency services personell all over the country because it works. Unfortunately it hasn't caught on as much here in the northeast but it is gaining poplarity everyday.

    First off, what is your current fitness level? HS/college athlete? Do you have a regular fitness routine? if so, what is it? When are you going to start the academy? Q's to answer before you jump on any type of balls to the wall routine. If you want PM me and I will try to get you going in the right direction. - Hurley

    You're right to ask these questions; what is the baseline from where it would be appropriate for the prospective probie to begin a physical fitness program. I should have added to the nutrition info I posted that it is for building a stronger physical foundation to be able to tackle the testing and maintenance program he wants to develop.

    Everyone is different Capt. without speaking to him I could not offer anything specific. This is not something that can be done over email or reading Muscle & Fiction mags. Someone could work on a farm and have that "Country strength" where he could pull ceilings for days. Not to say someone couldnt get there. Everyone has their own baseline and some will be higher/lower on the same scale. I hope this somewhat answers your question Capt. -Hurley

    I would like to thank everyone for the great response, I currently go to the gym 5-6 days a week and focus mostly on cardio...30 min w/ 25 pound weight vest, then jog a mile on the tread mill. I also do full warm-up with sit-ups, push-ups, lite jog, and stretching. I work as a carpenter so I am pretty all around strong, but I am looking to lift some more so I think I will be trying to find a trainer to help me make a program up. I have little knowledge of weight lifting except what I remember from high school sports, which isn't much. Thanks again for the great response.

    Thanks to the strong lobbying efforts of both the IAFF and the volunteer fire service (with a special notice of FASNY as the lead in this issue) NFPA has 2 different standards that address this:
    NFPA 1710 for career depts requires minimum response times which limits the distance by 4 minutes drive time for the 1st due engine and 8 minutes for the rest of the 1st alarm assignment.
    NFPA 1720 for VFD's lets the locals determine what they need.
    ISO considers any property beyond 5 miles drive istance to be unprotected. Their standard calls for engines companies within 1.5 miles of all properties and ladders within 2.5 miles. Beyond the 1.5 & 2.5 they prorate the department based on % beyond those distances.
    Agreed, this is one of the questions the the Comptroller was concerned with, what happens if the owner (this so called illegaly set up not for profit) no longer wants to rent it to the FD after 10 years? What happens if the principals are sued over this by an angry tax payer?
    The report also mentions that the fire commisioners failed to meet other legal requirments, including mandatory training and purchasing in general.

    This is the station as it looked before circa 2002 or so...

    Nyack is not unlike many, many older East coast volunteer depts. where there are many firehouses, some around the block from one another. This exists in part from the formation of the towns themselves and the fire departments way back when. The center of town needed the fire protection and companies would form, rivalries were heated and individual companies would form to "compete" with each other where the "action" was...the center of town with the most structures. As towns grew and areas were built up other companies would form to protect these new areas, so you look on a map and there is a cluster of houses in the center of town, then other stations near the borders and outlaying areas of the districts.
    Another thing to note in many cases these houses are owned by the individual companies. My dept. is like Nyack, 7 stations, 4 are owned by the individual companies, you cant just close them down, especially without an uproar from the residents in the area, it's not easy to close down a firehouse that has been in a neighborhood for 100 years.

    The new firehouse was built on the site of the old firehouse, nothing was changed. Same apparatus housed there, Jackson Engine's 1995 KME "10-1500" and the Fire Patrol's 1990 Saulsbury "10-Rescue", as well as the district van "10-Patrol"
    This station is not near the Thruway, you're probably thinking of the Catherine St firehouse (Chelsea H&L's 1999 Pierce Quantum TDA "10-99" and Jackson Hose's 1984 Hahn "10-1001") which is near the High Ave entrance to the Thruway NB.
    Check the map of Rockland firehouses I made for the location of their firehouses. I can't speak for the Nyack FD, but the layout of the streets and the traffic patterns would make for a pretty congested response if you tried to house six companies in the same building. The six companies in the heart of the village (1 TDA, 4 pumpers, 1 rescue) are housed in four firehouses. Mazeppa Engine and Highland Hose are each housed in their own buildings, the other four companies are paired up in two firehouses as I've detailed above.

    If you dont do cardio you are going to sell yourself short. This job is balls to the wall for 10-20 minutes. If you are useless after the first 6 flights of stairs what good are you when you need to force that door and make a search or move a handline. Run intervals and do stairs, with weights if you have a vest or with dumbells in your hands. I went through the academy before this BS CPAT test, if you didnt run you were going to be forced out or put in the spotlight, two things you never want.

    Great advice. I have some information about nutrition that was given to me from Cenegenics Medical Institute in Charleston, S.C. This can be very helpful for everybody;
    1. Never skip meals; This will force your body into starvation mode and cause your metabolism to slow down, basically hoarding whatever calories you eat. Rather, eat smaller meals more frequently, based on the following suggestions. Think of food as fuel for your body.
    2. Base each meal around a lean protein source: fish, chicken, turkey, lean beef (occasionally), yogurt (plain, unsweetened), cheese, cottage cheese and legumes (including soy). The serving size of protein should be about the size of the palm of your hand and the height of a deck of cards.
    3. Cut out high glycemic carbohydrates: Bread, pasta, rice, cereals, candy, baked goods, pretzels, sweets, etc.
    4. Eat at least 3-5 servings of fresh vegetables and 1-2 servings of fresh fruit every day: Vegetables are an excellent source of phyto-nutrients and fiber. Choose whole fruits instead of fruit juice because juicing removes the fiber and increases the glycemic index. Avoid corn, potatoes, bananas, dried fruit and tropical fruits (pineapple, mango, papaya, etc.).
    5. Add healthy fats to your diet: Essential omega-3 and omega-9 fatty acids are crucial for the prevention of heart disease, arthritis, joint problems and immune system weakness. Good sources include salmon, sardines, almonds, walnuts, avocados, olive oil, canola oil and fish supplements.
    6. Drink lots of water: Drink 6-8, 8 ounce glasses of pure(distilled) water daily. Drink one extra glass for every caffeinated beverage and when you exercise.
    7. Keep alcohol intake to a minimum: While 4-8 ounces of red wine daily provides health benefits, more than that can increase your health risk. Dry red wine is the best choice. Hard alcohols are also low glycemic. Everything in moderation.
    8. Choose natural products: Avoid refined foods, hydrogenated oils, artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners and preservatives. Avoid fat-free products, which usually make up for a lack of taste by adding artificial ingredients and sugar. Shop the perimeter of your grocery store.
    9. Take your suppliments daily: Studies show reduced calorie diets without supplementation lower metabolism, but with supplementation the metabolism is unchanged.
    It's not easy to keep to these guidelines. If you have to cheat, it's better to have one big blowout day per week, than to keep nibbling here and there. If anyone is interested I have a comprehensive list of the glycemic index of specific foods and a protein reference list. You can PM me here on the site, or e-mail me at efdcapt115@aol.com. Best of luck.

    Hello, I was looking for some information about preparing for a career fire academy, specifically for the Westchester Career Fire Academy. I was recently canvassed and have been preparing for the CPAT for about a year and was trying to find out more information about any academy requirements, I know FDNY makes you run 1.5 miles in a set amount of time and also have pull-up, sit-up, and push-up requirements, does Westchester have any of these requirements? As I said I have been getting ready for the CPAT, but want to make sure I am getting ready for the actual academy as well. Thanks in advance for any help.

    2nd what jack said. Get a router and put it between your existing computer that has the optonline, and optonline "modem". The function of the router is to route communications to/from multiple computers inside the house. As far as optonline is concerned, it's still serving one computer. As mentioned, wires is best because you don't suffer from any bandwidth bottlenecks or interference from things like microwaves/cordless phones/distance issues. IF you do go the wireless route, make sure you SECURE YOUR WIRELESS. Routers can be hooked up with default settings but that usually means no wireless security, which means any idiot can park in front of your house and leech your internet access.
    Netgear and D-Link seem to make good stuff lately. Linksys has kinda gone downhill since it's acquisition by Cisco - I'd only go with one of them if you plan to flash the router with third party software (DD-WRT) - but that's a bit advanced for what you want/need. If I had to pick one brand, it would be netgear.
    Check out Newegg.com. Good prices, free shipping on many items, good customer service, no sales tax in NYS (eat it Albany).

    We've equipped all three of our Engine Companies with a TIC. The Officer is to take the TIC inside for all calls, even if it isn't needed, to make it a habit.
    We were denied the TIC for our Truck this year, hopefully we can get it next year.
    One thing worth reminding others of is the value of a 360 recon. You may not see anything to inidicate a basement fire from the front, but side or rear windows to the basement could tell you more of what's going on. Look for windows, Bilco doors and you can even take a quick peak for dryer vents to see if smoke is coming from them.

    Again another firefighter was injured because he fell through the floor, a previous post about the 1st line is was closed but i wanted to mention this again because of the recent incident in Toledo OH. The firefighter possibly not aware of a basement fire fell through a hole burnt through the flooring. Again the importance of the TIC is unmeasurable, a valuable tool to possibly recognize a hole in the flooring. Again if we can all add to this we might help someone avoid a serious injury or death from falling through the floor.
