  1. Great audio clip, thanks for sharing. It will be in my head all day
  2. Seems to me that a legit question was asked. He didn't single out any person, did not single out a department, just went off of what he observed in the photo. He tried to educate himself on the topic, as how I thought that this forum was supposed to do. So why bother posting if you can't use this forum and site for what it was intended for, to develop as a first responder. To ask questions to further yourself, and to explore and discuss topics in a professional manner. Seems that the topic got off hand, as when I read the topic, I figured "I use the scott pack often, what can I learn from this discussion". Instead besides from several very good post by members that often do an excellent job in posting and keeping it professional and informative in my opinion, it has digressed into whether someone has caused a personal attack on an individual or different sectors of the force (career v paid) etc. I think if it were an illustrated figure and not an actual fire ground picture, the same question would of been brought out. And if we take the personal factor out from our opinions and work on the discussion at hand. Than possibly we can learn a thing or two from this discussion. One bit of advice that I have taken away from the topic besides from what the original poster had stated, but what Als had mentioned about the FAST issue as it made me think about what I had learned from my fellow members speaking about the subject, and got me to think this morning. "Should you wear the waist strap..absolutely. It is the proper way to wear the device and keeps the weight on your hips which is designed to reduce fatigue. I also often discuss that it is easier to find th e strap in the event you have to be put into the SCBA harness as taught to FAST members if it is buckled in place instead of free floating. I also try to limit the amount of things hanging from me and my gear when operating as I don't want to have any increased chance at becoming entangled."
  3. Hopefully there are survivors. ATT FOX 5 they are not sure of fatalities, and they say the pilot steered to the hudson, to prevent going into a populated area. Hope all are ok and safe, both the passengers and rescuers. I used to work on A320's they are beautiful planes, very modern, but FOD/Bird Strikes is dangerous no matter what the technology
  4. QUOTE(Remember585 @ Jan 14 2009, 04:28 PM) I say take all the money - wherever it may come from - for this event's security and hire all the nation's law enforcement officers currently out of work. How about that for change! I think I will use that in my Presidential campaign in 12 years... John Munson for President. I'll vote for you bro. Got another one here, 2 votes
  5. Hey, was wondering if anyone knew what was going on up at the cortlandt town center today 1/10. Was up there around 16:00 and state police had an area in front of Wal-mart and the movie theater cordened off. Just curious Mike
  6. My question is, were there volunteer agencies in the Bronx in the middle of last century? And were they called upon in a regular manner?
  7. I have a question with the LOSAP debate, as I also feel that it is for the point getters as well, and not for the people that truly care. When I joined the vol. fire service in my town, I joined because I had heard a lot about the actual firematic side of the department and it had intrigued me. It was nice that a friend or two was in the department, to help work me way in with the working crowd, however, I really wasn't in it for the social aspect. However, as cheif2x and 585 have mentioned, the friendships and bond that go allow with the department will last forever, and I think that this has been wielded with a solid showing at training, and carrying your own weight on the fire ground. As chiefx2 had mentioned "one of our 5 companies (whom I refer to as a social club) came to our council (governing body) and started their quest for the program" I agree with you. It is a shame when myself and a certain other member come back with certificates of training, the question is not asked what did you learn, but "I think you met your Losap points in training for the year". That just upsets me, as well as others that try to work hard to better themselves as it does make that company or even the volunteer side of things sound like a social club. As for 585 you are correct in saying that the point getters can go somewhere else or quit, they do nothing for department or company moral, and in my case as being a bigger guy in a smaller cab, hence the reason why I asked about the wellness program, just take up space in the rig. So to ask a question. What is there that can be done, about this losap thing? I know I for one can care less if I get a few bucks in 20 years. I still cant figure it out after all. However, there are a few that can determine how to get the most points, with the least amount of effort. Also as NWFDmedic had mentioned, how would being proactive work, it sounds great, however would it hurt those that are just on the edge? I am just asking the questions for debate, as it seems that the topic in the thread is now LOSAP, and I am sure each department out there, whom uses LOSAP has there share of the point getters. Thanks Mike
  8. Yes sir Chief and proud of it!
  9. Very nice show! Let's go Met's it is hard being a fan, but I always come back after every heartbreak. But awesome views, and I was always wondering what was going on with Shea, but now I know, thanks!
  10. What are some of the good scanners out there? I know i could just open my pager up to monitor mode if i wanted the county fire freq. However, I was curious what some of the members used and owned for personal use. Do you use any extra antenna's as well? Thanks Mike
  11. Just out of curiousity, where is the moderation? or do we let some stuff slip and catch other stuff?
  12. However, do you think that it might be worded as excess spending? How many chiefs have the perk of a car to go home with, than multiply that by the cost of a car for each or simply just fuel.

  14. Hey Everyone, I was wondering in your agency whether it is fire, ems or pd if you have an established wellness program? I began talking to the Lt. for the ems department here, and was exploring some ideas, on how we could create a wellness program for our agency. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. i.e. Biggest Loser among Companies, Gym Memberships, Workout Groups, Speakers, etc... Thanks Mike
  15. For anyone interested in possibly starting their own program or "Biggest Loser" Challenge. I went to Barnes and Nobles last night, and purchased the book, it seems like a very interesting, it is an easy read, with some good information for the beginner. However, it has a chapter solely dedicated to creating your own Biggest Loser Challenge, from starting it up, to your own challenges, to a cardio and circuit program. As well as a recipe and motivational chapter from the previous seasons contestants. Seems pretty interesting, so we shall see how it works, or if it gets the members out as well, whom are interested. -Mike
