So far, I've read 33 posts of nothing but speculation surrounding the incident. So rather than fanning this possible garbage can fire into a structure fire of a magnitute that warrants investigative journalism, why don't we go to the source first? That said, is there anyone from Somers on the air here who can shed some actual light onto the subject?

Show up to the dock late and you missed the boat, my friend. I'm not bashing the career guys (as a whole), nor would I ever. The moral of my story is "people who live in glass houses". I know our side of things has its issues, and I'm doing my best from the inside to fix them. I take care of my own problems before I say something about someone else's. And if I am on a sinking ship (gotta love the nautical references here), I don't try to drag down others with me. However, I heard about this man in particular within weeks of first joining the service. In my years in, his name continually comes up in stories about his (mis)exploits trying to shut out volunteers. So perhaps I harbor a vendetta. That being said, the media has the right to pound salt. All they do is blow things out of proportion and make changes that much more difficult. And yes, I would bash anyone personally who tries to throw us as a volunteer organization, to the wolves.
PS: "Going out on a limb" is fancy speak for ASSume.

Yes, please launch a media attack on the volunteer service. (sarcasm) You, sir, are a known enemy of us volunteers. Don't make like we haven't heard of your exploits trying to get volunteers shut out of the service. Deal with your own problems before you attack us. Got a problem with the way things are done? Volunteer and help us out. I'm not saying we are perfect, but I'll be damned if you think you can spread your volunteer hating rhetoric without opposition.
    Have a nice day :-)

I agree that an updated version of the rig is needed....
I do however, have a few comments to respond to:
Rigs should not be used based on levels of "interest". Rigs are to respond based on SOP/SOG's set forth by the officers of the department. MA-10 always had its assigned runs and never had a problem getting on the street when I was an officer. Historically a rookie chauffeur had to qualify on MA-10 before they could begin driver training on any of the full sized rigs with the truck and tanker coming last. I'm not sure if that changed in the past 7 years but honestly it shouldn't have.
Finally, the fact that the rig having a manual transmission was a factor to folks not driving it is frustrating to me. In my mind, if you are not capable of mastering the relatively simple task of driving a vehicle with a manual transmission, then how can you possibly master the complex study and execution of fire-ground hydraulics, rural water supply, aerial operations, etc, etc... The old MA-10 has a silky smooth, fully synchronized transmission, a very predictable clutch action, and enough torque that it's nearly impossible to stall.... If anything its a great rig to teach someone how to operate an emergency vehicle AND how to drive stick on simultaneously. I taught more then one member how to drive stick on it....
Just try and drive the Brockway and see what a real manual transmission is like!!!!
I'm not sayin'... I'm just sayin'

As many of you know the FDNY exam is approaching quickly and everyone knows that the physical portion of the exam will be the CPAT. I myself am taking the exam and me and retired FDNY lieutenant from my company are in the process of building a course at our firehouse. I am just posting here to see if anyone in the county would be interested in participating in running through the course during a designated time during the week. Their may be a small one time fee like $15 dollars to cover the cost of building the course and after payment you could use the course as many times as you would like. If anybody is interested please PM me or email me at ifco2007@yahoo.com for more information.

Engine 113 was the source pumper at the dry hydrant on Oscaleta road. E113 fed E112 and E140 that were the relay pumpers in line up to the fire scene. During the operation of the Tower Ladder 57, Tanker 2 was used to supply the master stream. I hope this clears everything thing up for the brothers that were not on the scene and are monday morning quaterbacking rural water operations...... Us up here in the North county do not always have the luxury of having those red things every 500 feet. Sometimes we need to get down and dirty and actually lay out an entire bed of hose.

So everyone was on 1 fireground for attack and another for water supply.
2 frequencies and you need the field com to coordinate?
Yes its warm, but so is any rehab unit, bus, ambulance, etc.

    Seth,
I want to thank you and everyone else for the kind words and best wishes. The accomplishments you credit me for achieving was a team effort. I have had some of the best officers that any chief can ask for, and this goes for the guys who aren’t even around anymore. When I was sworn in as assistant chief in 1996 I had set goal for myself and the officers and I set goal for our dept. I am proud to say 95% have been achieved and the other 5% are well on the way. As someone once said to me “leadership qualities are something you are born with” well I disagree with that statement. A true leader looks to learn, listen and educate others every day even when he or she is no longer the leader. Ralph Nader said it best, "The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers."
Thank you again, but make no mistake about it I maybe an EX or Past Chief but I will always look out for Yorktown and the fire service best interest.

All though the truck does the job and looks great... it still has its problems and normal wear and tear it has recieved over the past 20 years. It has responded to a lot of calls over that time period and it is definitely time to replace this truck especially that it is the only truck responding to all of these call when the engines can alternate. I think it is the right choice to replace this and move on to a newer tower ladder. Especially when it struggles to get up all of the big hills in the town.
