  1. 24 / 72 in new rochelle 0800-0800 "can't" work more than 24 hrs in a row
  2. there you go taking all the fun out it now what am i gonna read about geez
  3. John it is up to each instructor, how tough he wants to be, but it has gotten better, students are told they will be dropped for any of the above reasons, and by the first few classes the ones that cant make all of the classes (gee and they have the schedule before class starts) due to whatever reason are dropped. more and more get pushed to scene support if they cant meet the minimum requirements. some drop the classes due to the schedule or the work, and some are dropped due to poor performance
  4. I know we are not in FLA but unless it has changed you had to go to school, get certified as a firefighter prior to joining any career dept.(volunteer too?) Vol have gone thru the fire academt at Montour Falls along side career firefighters, if there were openings. So what are you saying "but how can volunteers match the hours of training a career academy produces" are the career firefighters over trained? FF-1 is a joke, not enough hours , yet the powers that be wont admit that. The system is flawed. Volunteers can get the same training, same hours it will take much longer and a training system must be put in place. But so long as the "ITS TO LONG NOW" sentiment is allowed to run the show there will be 2 different standards, with all the hard feelings along with it.
  5. was there a problem gaining access to the fire area? for anyone on the scene
  6. just look at the responses on both youtube and here and for the most part if you disagree with the way the apparatus responded you are wrong. as stated it was a car fire and it looks like an apparatus is already on the scene when the featured rig arrives. I dont agree with the way the vehicle was driven, 1 because of the nature of the call (car fire) no mention of trapped occupants, 2nd dont video tape it and play it for the world to see. but again sometimes the tone / attitude / is ingrained so deep that it is considered normal anyway/ anyhow / anycost
  7. Seth, you say that both were from the same station, was the truck relocated? according to the map it came from sta 16 there are a lot of questions given the 2 different routes that they took according to the map / news.
  8. ok I will bite, A major incident across the entire region, and only the career depts are going to be busy???? It somehow will miss all the depts that have members on the tech rescue team so that they wont be busy. HMMM ok it happened that way, who were you as the IC going to call last week before this team was online??????
  9. With todays legal system, you have to be out of your mind to do a live burn in an aquired structure. Forget the live fire, just training in the structure without the "proper paperwork" can get you jammed up. You pulled ceilings with fiberglass insulation!! cough, cough where is my lawyer!!! All it takes is one person, and thats what it sounds like happened at the incident in question.
  10. Paul, the fire started in the basement in the area of the gas burner, enclosed area, traveled up the duckwork to the first and second floors. members found fire showing at the ceiling level in the basement in the area of the furnace room. at about the same time members found fire in the walls and coming thru the floor of the kitchen. the floor fire, turned out to be a floor vent. the fire was spotted in the walls with a TIC. after knocking that down, the TIC found fire in a ceiling bay about 180 degrees away from the floor / wall fire in the kitchen. that bay contained the chase for the ductwork for the gas burner. here it gets a little different, it seems the bay was used as the duct, as only 2 sheets of metal ductwork were found after the backdraft. Talking to contractors, it wasnt uncommon to use the wood ceiling joists to act as the channel or ductwork. they blocked off the end of 2 bays with sheetmetal pieces to direct it upstairs. they put 2 sheets the length of the bay on the bottom to act as the 4th side. The fire traveled up third bay toward the livingroom and also back towards the kitchen. We think 3 things happened all about the same time A member opened up the bay in the kitchen, the crew using a 2 1/2 in the basement found the vertical channel leading up to the first floor, and a member took a window remote from all of this on the second floor. At the same time that the ceiling blew down in the livingroom, (no one was in there at the time) a fireball blew out the second floor window on the 2/3 corner when a member took that window. when all was done there was almost no sign of fire in that room where the fireball blew out off. We had members search the second floor with no signs of weakness in the hallway at the top of the stairs, after the backdraft / smoke explosion, the floor was gone at the top of the stairs, which was right over the livingroom / kitchen bay that blew down the sheetrock ceiling. So Paul to make a long story longer, We think because the ceiling bays were used a flue, the fact you had combustible wood on 3 sides with heavy char, smoke built up to the explosive range, and found the oxygen it needed when the hole was made in the kitchen ceiling. As far as the 2nd floor I dont remember if a floor vent was near that window that vented as that might be why there was a fireball out that window at the sametime. hope this answers some of your questions.
  11. Walter, our ems folks, transcare, have told us in advance any MOS serious injury, straight to Jacobi, and we have received fast treatment when we did have to go and for us yes it is quicker
  12. 2nd degree to his right ear treated @ jacobi and i want to say lucky, but he was wearing the hood to protect him from something like that, may only happen that one time but he is glad he was wearing it
  13. how ironic this happened yesterday, firefighter wearing his hood, ear flaps down, and was caught in a mini backdraft, (fire started in basement , traveled the ductwork, blewdown the livingroom ceiling, member who got burnt was in hallway just outside of livingroom, not here to tell anybody what to wear or how to wear it, but this incident happened without warning, i was in the room shortly before the backdraft and there was minor heat.
  14. best advice I can give you chief; dont let anybody take your pic no good will come of it. Now about your ears were you wearing your hood when you felt this ringing????
  15. and here we go yet again, and the fire went out, how is that possible?? a member without a helmet? their hoods werent up?no reply yet from batt2? is it safe to step out of the house? how did I make thru 28 yrs without the emtbravo safety police? HOW ABOUT EVERYBODY WORRY ABOUT THEMSELVES AND DO WHAT YOU THINK NEEDS TO BE DONE AT ANY PARTICULAR MOMENT.
  16. I was there and i want to say it was a well coordinated effort by all involved. It isnt your everyday incident, it makes running a fire seem like a piece of cake. Good job Capt Dempsey and EFD.

  20. I am looking for some input on tried and proven methods for defeating H.U.D. windows. I have read all i want to read on the subject. personal experience would be helpful now thanks
  21. Syd, thanks for putting on a very educational seminar.
  22. Chris nrfd has a full time health and safety officer. at the moment the rank is Lt he had to go to school in Fla FDSOA to be certified and he is required to respond (while on duty) to all incidents that he is needed for. He is notified when off duty if he is needed to respond. Good to have when you go M/A to the scene as an extra set of eyes and ears. But as health and safety he is responsible for more that just incidents. medicals, exposure reports, uniforms, hose tests etc. and it is a learning experience at the scene of an incident if he is doing his job "right" he can make it difficult to do our job right.
  23. Here we go again with the photo firefighters / i only know what I read in the book firefighters. I wasnt there, I dont know when the pic was taken, and without you being more specific in your question it can lead to the same bs as most comments on photos on this website. I will save everybody some time nice pics, oops something wasnt worn, postioned, or used properly, career vs volunteer I am done with my rant
  24. couple of pics of VPS covered windows
  25. thanks again John, We just found one with the 2x4's going vertical instead of horizontal, not that it makes a big difference.
