Does anyone know what this is used for. I have seen 4 in the Pinebrook Blvd Area of New Rochelle, 1 in the north end of N.R. 2 on Weaver St in Scarsdale and 1 in White Plains.

Some are on stand-a-lone poles and others are on the utility poles with electric, phone and cable.

I will agree with your assessment to a certain degree. In most cases you don't need a college degree to be a firefighter. However there is a certain amount of maturing that you obtain in your years at college. The ability to organize, prioritize, execute and summarize is honed during your college studies. I have seen first hand that in my career, it was those who attended some form of post high school training did better on the promotional exams. I also saw a probie that who barley made it out of high school not able to understand the 24 hour clock.
When I was in high school I considered going into the F.B.I. I was told that the F.B.I. wouldn't consider any applicant unless that person had a 4 year college degree. I was told it could be for basket weaving (I was in HS in the early 70's). The reason was that they want the applicant to have that 4 years of the maturing process.
The bottom line is in my experience those who had at least a 2 year associates degree or better, advanced quicker and higher than those who didn't.

As I stated in my earlier post, I agree with you to a point. I did say that in my experience those who went to post H.S. training, did better on advancement. I personally ranked in the top 5 on the LT list and then on the Capt. list. I earned a BBA and those ahead of me on the lists all had either 2 or 4 year degrees.
I was not being arrogant, I was sarcastic. If you can't see the sarcasm in my post about Gates, Jobs and Brannsen I think you might not see the humor that is rampant in the fire houses. Good luck IF you get on the job. It will be interesting.

And look how they turned out....Gates can't manage his money....he keeps giving away millions and millions to charity after charity. Jobs is another one who just gives money away. Branssen has never matured. He is always buying new toys and running all over the world on a new adventure. Is that what you want ??? Or a more stable life style that the more mature well refined person lives????

It's a good idea just prior to arriving at the station you prepare the kids properly.
    1) 2-3 12oz cans of the favorite soda or high sugar drink.
    2) 1 double scoop of their favorite ice cream on a cone.
    3) Tell the kids there is a special surprise for them hidden somewhere in the fire house and they only have five minutes to find it. (hint: look in the rooms that have desks in them)
    4) The firemen with the white or gray color shirts love to answer questions, lots of questions.
    5) Most important is to have fun.

Government should be very mindful of how it spends taxpayer money. But are their not benefits to promoting esprit de corps? We do that in many ways: By having dress uniforms, dept patches, company logos and/ slogans, awards for heroic actions, Giant flags hung from ladders along with a flag drapped coffin and Honor guards for our departed brothers. Parades and open house events. The fire bell on the rig or the gold leaf & murals. While many take this to extremes, what benefit to the tax payer are these things?
Their is value in these items, in building up an organization. If not why dont we paint every ambulance white with an orange strip (as in the original KKK standard). why not 1 color for fire trucks? wouldn't that save taxpayer money?
    Esprit de corps
Morale, also known as esprit de corps when discussing the morale of a group, is an intangible term used to describe the capacity of people to maintain belief in an institution or a goal, or even in oneself and others. The second term applies particularly to military personnel and to members of sports teams, but is also applicable in business and in any other organizational context, particularly in times of stress or controversy. While the term is often used by authority figures as a generic value judgment of the willpower, obedience and self-discipline of a group tasked with performing duties assigned by a superior, more accurately it refers to the level of individual faith in the collective benefit gained by such individual sacrifices.
According to Alexander H. Leighton, "morale is the capacity of a group of people to pull together persistently and consistently in pursuit of a common purpose".
Note: I am not knocking DFVAC for this missed oppurtunity. They debated what was best for them. My point is how fast everyone is willing to write off the value of this concept.

    1) A new singing coach.
    2) You're not tall enough.
    3) Have you tried the E-Trade baby?

All I can say to this is timing is everything. Saturday morning and not much else happening in the Bronx. I would sure hope FDNY could get all of those resources to that location. The only thing that your run down doesn't show is the on scene time of ALL of the units. How long does it take to get ALL of the apparatus and manpower on the scene. It was almost at the farthest Northeast point of the Bronx.
You mentioned Pelham Manor FD and what can they do. Back in the early 1980's on a hot Sunday afternoon around 4 PM of the 4th of July weekend, there was a 2 car MCI at almost that exact spot. Actually it was at the turn-a-round about 100 yards east of the bus crash site. There was 9 total patients, of which 4-5 were critical with the remaining patients, none were walking wounded. All patient were boarded. 2 of the critical were in respiratory arrest on the scene. Both from blocked airways. NYSP and NYPD were on scene. New Rochelle Amb 1 was dispatched and was the first unit other than the 1 NYSP unit and the Hwy 1 unit on the scene. Because the accident was in the Bronx, The Hwy 1 unit was advised to have FDNY, and NYC EMS respond to the scene. The HWY 1 unit had already called for emergency services and he advised that NYC had no EMS units available in the Bronx that could respond. A triage unit out of Jacobi was en route. At this point NR Amb 1 requested through NRPD dispatcher that 4-5 additional ambulances were needed. 3 additional ambulances from Westchester were on scene in 10 minutes and while waiting for an update of the ETA of the 4th ambulance, a BLS unit from Misericordia Hospital showed up. All of the Westchester ambulances (4) were ALS. The Bronx unit advised that if they weren't needed they were to become available because there were no other in service units for the entire Bronx.
At this point fire units started to arrive. 2 engines from Pelham Manor. They were asked if FDNY was on the way. They stated that FDNY called them and requested that they respond because no fire units available in the Bronx. Units from Queens were responding.
The triage unit from NYC EMS had the Misericordia unit take the 2 least injured to Jacobi. The triage unit then advised the remaining on scene ambulances that Jacobi can not handle any other patients and to transport the remaining patients to Westchester hospitals. The remaining 7 patients were transported to New Rochelle Hospital.
The total on scene time was less than 25 minutes from arrival of the 1st ambulance till the last patient was transported. At the time that the last patient was removed from the scene, no FDNY fire units were on scene. It is not know if they were still en route from Queens or they were told to go in service.
As I said at the beginning of my comments....."timing is everything"
