70 years ago tonight thousands of brave men loaded up on planes, gliders, and ships for the greatest invasion ever. Many never made it home. The courage it must of taken is mind boggling to me.

because it is easier to operate! My 2cents I hate the give me more give me less pressure sh*t. The pump operator should know what he is pumping so that when the inside team asks for more pressure, the pump operator should know right away there is a problem somewhere between the pump and the nozzle, kink, burst length, clog, etc. jacking up the pressure till the wheels are bouncing off the ground is not gonna solve that problem. Driving is more that waving to the crowd. I am going back to my cave now.

Absolutely! How about adding to this just knowing your 1st due territory as in streets, standpiped bldgs., dead end hydrants, obscured hydrants, no hydrants at all, etc.etc.. Another thing too is many places seem to assign positions on apparatus by "Seniority" and not "Ability!"

There is more to being a good MPO also. But being able to get water is a good start. Main size, identifying a un primed pump etc.......Hands out to sides palms up and a shoulder shrug is one of the scariest things to see at a fire

And let's not forget to actually be able to quickly charge the line. You could have the manpower and speed to properly select and position the proper size hoseline but if your MPO is clueless and incapable of doing his Job, then it's all for naut!

I always wonder if we really took a look at FF injuries and LODs how many of them could have been prevented by changing our strategy/tactics or just following the basics. Too many times it seems like everyone is ready to cast blame on others and finger point but in reality it's ourselves I believe and our so called "Brother" ffs who are to blame because many of us have become too complacent and lazy and just don't give a rats ass about our Profession and expanding our knowledge of it. God forbid one does too cause then you'll be labeled a "Geeper" or "Buff" and God knows we can't have that!!!

Why does drinking have to be a part of the tradition - for funerals or parades? If you want to get drunk, don't go to an event with lots of cameras, critics and big heavy trucks that need to be driven around.
Funerals have become social events and it's sad. It is supposed to be a somber showing of respect to the fallen and appreciation to the family but now its become a party event. Go back to your firehouse if you want to have a party. It doesn't need to be on the streets and in public view of those thinking there's a funeral going on.
We are our own worst enemies and the proliferation of cameras and internet distribution of photos/video makes it much easier for stupid behavior to be spread like wildfire.
There's no excuse for drinking in uniform or urinating in public places.

This isn't about missteps of individual firefighters or police officers, This is about the largest police department in the world and its leadership's total failure to ever in modern history train the officers (that they routinely dispatch to building fires) as to what and what not to do prior to the arrival of the fire department. To his credit, Police Commissioner Bratton has acknowledged (in the wake of this tragedy) that in addition to providing no fire scene training to police officers, the NYPD (as well as the other large city PD's that the chief of patrol contacted) have NEVER had an SOP for response to and operations at a building fire... Yet they have always dispatched police officers to respond forthwith to these incidents. In NYC this was a major problem during the time that I was a firefighter (1981-2002) especially in the late 1980's where 911 frequently delayed relaying fire calls to the FDNY while multiple sector cars were already enroute to the fire. It was common to arrive at a well advanced building fire with people hanging out the windows screaming for help only to encounter the entire block filled with sector cars leaving engine companies with no access to the closest hydrants and ladder companies without access to the front of the fire building eliminating the use of their aerial devices for rescue, ventilation and roof access. Frequently PO's took windows before lines were stretched. The danger to trapped civilians, PO's and firefighters was dramatically increased by the well meaning PO's. When then Fire Commissioner Joe Bruno publicly spoke of these problems, then Police Commissioner Ben Ward stated, "Anyone can put out the fire ... I put out my own damn fires!" It's mindless idiots like Ward who are responsible for tragedies such as the one in Coney Island that killed PO Guerra and severely injured his partner. Their actions were brave, unfortunately, the leadership of the NYPD let them down by never having trained them. Just as firefighters are not routinely dispatched to confront a perp with a gun, Police Officers should not be routinely dispatched to confront a fire in a building. Fire is not something to take lightly. God Bless both of these heroic police officers and their families and I pray that this tragedy leads to better training for police regarding fire incidents as well as a clear definition as to who should be responding to what.

Management in the fire service today is apprehensive when it come to dealing with problems that happen on duty for fear of a lawsuit. There is no way for the most part a department is going to touch something that happens off duty 2 states away. This is just from my perspective. Law departments in city hall run most fire departments.

I, along with 25 of my Brothers spent 2 days paying our respect to Lt Walsh and FF Kennedy. I have to tell you that there needs to be a class on proper etiquette taught to the younger generation of firefighters. I can't tell you how many members I saw carrying cases of beer on their shoulders walking the streets where our Brother was being celebrated. Guys just walking by the church with 24 on their shoulder. I don't really know if they were career or volley and don't really care who they are affiliated with but their actions disgusted me as well as other New Rochelle Firefighters. If you want to have a few beers between the service and the last drive past the sea of blue please go to a bar. If you want to tailgate and party in front of the civilians like morons please go to a football or baseball game. In front of the church and on peoples lawns is not the place!!!!

Are we talking about this "selfie" in inappropriate situations craze as well?
Boston should have had a separate area for themselves, and out of towners. Ship the out of towners to Gillete Stadium and let them tailgate or go home. The people who live and work in that city each and every day should have had their city back. So they could go about their normal activities, go to their normal bars, visits with their friends. Showing support during a funeral is one thing, invading a mourning community is another. Boston is a town that likes to have fun...but also is serious when they need to be serious. There is no black and white there. The funeral is the end of the public respects, and now it turns towards personal mooring and figuring out how to go on.
Another thing that drives me nuts is group shots with everyone smiling with the burnt out house and crying victims in the background. Put down the camera, don't even touch that FB app to brag about being there, and GO HELP THE PEOPLE WHO'S LIVES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED!
Salvage has been replaced with a cell phone. Tarp anyone? Give me a hand with those family photos. One minute Chief, just gotta check my Facebook.

From a January News 12 quote from Mayor Ernie Davis

    WHAT MIDDLE CLASS?!?!
Good luck with all the "technology" in the new "state of the art" EOC, but let's see how you get your broken down trucks and lack of proper gear and equipment there with a fancy computer before your 2nd floor EOC is located in the basement. At least the guys will eventually get underground parking, which will be nice on snowy days not having to clear your car after shift.
I'd also like to add in the I fully support the guys in MVFD but I hate the conditions they are forced to work in. The funny part is, they are some of the best and most experienced in Westchester (most of them).

Did they ever fix the floor at the Oak St Station I believe it's Station 4? shouldn't they be worrying about that? I believe 2 Engines use to roll out of there and that's why they are down to 4 now instead of 5. Just another reason for always requesting m/a. Whose running that f*** shop over there?

The firehouse is 36 years old, and was built on a landfill. The building is sinking, and weeds are growing through the cracks. I suspect the FD just took the grant just to repair the roof.

The only reason they are doing this is because they got a grant. Let's see how they screw this one up. Maybe MVFD will benefit and actually get working heat!
