  1. I was in Cortlandt yesterday and was excited to hear some sirens. I was even more excited to stand on my daughter's balcony to see SANTA on a fire truck with my granddaughter. Very nice Cortlandt Engine Company! Merry Christmas!
  2. For firefighting, what are the requirements to identify, specifically, the confined space hazards in our response areas? Unless every confined space in every building is identified and planned for, no interior firefighting should take place?
  3. Everbody can read the OSHA Standards and become "experts". OSHA is really not that complicated. They create a lot of work/regulations/paper to create an awareness. The reasonable assumption is that when you have an awareness of the hazards, you will be able to be prepared to mitigate those hazards and perform your work safely. Confined Spaces http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/confinedspaces/index.html Non-Mandatory Appendix F -- Rescue Team or Rescue Service Evaluation Criteria http://www.osha.gov/pls/oshaweb/owadisp.show_document?p_table=STANDARDS&p_id=9803 The way I read this -----if you do not go into a confined space, you do not need a rescue team.
  4. Most of our departments still send the full box assignment when the police call back and tell us the automatic alarms is food on the stove. Why would we go back when there really is an accident?
  5. Anymore news on this call? How are the six OVAC members doing? Can anyone from OVAC give details regarding this call?
  6. Second guessing and asking questions is okay. That's how I'm gonna learn. Negative posting - There is no place for it on this site. I am also happy everybody is okay.
  7. Do you know what brands/models the equipment is?
  8. I started this topic to hopefully find out what the crew thought at the time. I would rather "monday morning quarterback" when everything turns out okay. So yes things, maybe, could have been handled differently. The call came in as a man down, or something to that affect. Once the crew discovered there were two patients, did they think there was something in the house that affected both patients? And that they should be removed from the scene prior to continuing treatment? Did they think the 2nd patient was reacting to the situation of the first patient? The suggestion that crews carry CO detectors is a constructive suggestion. Any others?
  9. I could have labelled this differently, I knew it didn't come in as a CO call. That, of course, is the scarey thing. CO being odorless and colorless. You never know what you're walking into. Glad everyone is okay. I assume there are no long term affects.
  10. Bamboo scaffolding with a wrap on the outside. Some type of netting/covering.

  12. Drove down the Thruway from Newburgh and we were able to see the clouds lit up with the glow from Newburgh. Couldn't see the beams, just the reflection in the clouds.
  13. It would appear there were other agency's that would seem to be closer. I would be curious to know the reasoning behind the agency's dispatched. (The less obvious ones, of course). I think that's the interesting part. There is a logical reason why say Scardsdale was dispatched and say Valhalla wasn't. I wouldn't want to be the guy or gal who gets the call that asks for 10 ambulances. Looks like everything went as smoothly as possible. I like the stories, not the critics.

  21. This is all good banter and I havn't taken it as PD vs EMS vs FD. Everything here cited here are just examples of situations that happen. Tomorrow, in a given situation, the cop is running into a burning building, a firefighter is chasing a purse snatcher, etc. etc. All good people with the best of intentions. Hopefully, just like everything in life, the individual will use his/her experience and knowledge and make the correct decision in a particular situation. So learn from others actions.
  22. From The Board of Directors Meeting Feb 2, 2010 Mayor Kelly then gave the Fire Department Report. He stated that for the month of November, the department responded to 27 calls, 20 during daytime hours and 7 during evening hours. For the month of December, the department responded to 30 calls, 22 during daytime hours and 8 during evening hours. He thanked all of the residents for their donations to the Haiti earthquake victims. He then gave an update on the engine. He stated that the Village has going out to bid and there have been two sets of bid documents picked up and the bid opening will be on Friday. The pump test for the old engine is scheduled for tomorrow. He stated that all of that information and more will be presented next Wednesday night and asked that all questions regarding the engine be held until that time.
  23. Town of New Faifield Board of Selectmen Minutes Jan. 14, 2010 Discussion and approval of the purchase of a ladder fire truck Fire Chief Ed McCue spoke of the opportunity to purchase a 2007 Smeal 100 foot aerial truck from Mt. Firefighter Mike Gil spoke of the financing of the truck and the Fire Dept. Reserve Fund. It was noted that there is currently approximately $1.1 million in the Fire Dept. Reserve Fund. Members of the BOS asked questions of the Fire Dept. and then the floor was opened to questions from the public. Many members of the public asked questions regarding the financing and the process of using the reserve fund. John Hodge made a motion to approve the purchase of a ladder fire truck as authorized by the Fire Dept. Board of Directors subject to a complete mechanical inspection prior to purchase. Susan Chapman seconded the motion. Vote: 2-0-1 (Motion approved- Monika Thiel abstained)
  24. Rumor has it that the Thruway Authority has, as part of the next Re-decking Project, details to install fencing along both sides for the full length of the bridge.
