Did you not read the first sentence with the word volunteer emblazoned in all caps for all the world to see how we're the scum of the earth? Perhaps not.
Top to bottom, left to right. Group words together as a sentence. Many sentences comprise a thought. Maybe they didn't teach you that in elementary school.

Chief Flynn I think to have an article point out that a firefighter is a Volunteer or Career is senseless, both sides have driving issues just as bad as the other. Just because you want people who have a career department to feel safe, does not mean it does not happen there. I have agreed with you on many issues here, but this one I have to say I disagree.
If you’re trying to say that career firefighters drive safer then volley firefighters...well your wrong if that is the statement. I have seen "career" firefighters blow red lights and stop signs on regular basis in the City, Yonkers, New Roc, and Mount Vern. So maybe if I write an editorial I on this should I use the term Career. So the people in my town feel safer because they are not volunteers I am writing about. While I am at should I mention if it is a female firefighter or male firefighter because there are people who think females are bad drivers, or should I state the firefighter is short or tall because there are people who think because if he or she is short they cant do the job, or should I state if a firefighter is black or white because there are racist people out there.

Yeah, because no career FF ever drove recklessly, ever, in the history of the world, right?

Ok, so I'm not sure why the difference between the two stats you have. Was it just because the the time period studied or were there different criteria in the search? The "Selected Special Analysis" is throwing me off. But we'll go with what we got. From 92-02 Career ff's made up 9.9% of the deaths and from '00 to '10 they're up to 18.8%. Since the two over lap this is terrible statistics, but when I average it out we get 14.35%. As of 2010 All career and mostly career FD's only represented 14% of the firefighters nation wide. Arguably even in mostly volunteer FD's the career guys still probably do the lion share of the apparatus driving. That more than doubles the number to 32% of all firefighters.
All of this however could mean nothing because take yonkers for example. Your dept has how many apparatus on the road available to respond every day? A quick google search came up with 20 including the battalions. If you take your typlical westchester volleys responding from home to fill 18 rigs and two chiefs (lets assume only two members on each rig because its a beautiful tuesday afternoon) you're going to wind up with 56 separate vehicles being driven. You'd have to do 3x as many runs in yonkers to cover the number of trips taken by the vollys. Then there's the number of miles driven. What's the average distance for urban paid depts vs suburban and rural volunteer depts? Chief, you're over simplifying some very complicated statistics just to make a point. Without the proper data how can people not take this as a biased attack? It makes it seem personal no matter how much you insist it is not.

OK everyone, the original post was whether FDNY can ride for free, which has been more than sufficiently answered by more than one person. It wasn't a thread to compare EMT qualifications, length of time as one, et al. Let's all put the rulers away - it's short, shriveled, and hangs to the left anyway.

Why would someone who lists themselves as a photo enthusiast even come with the statement that says PD FD or EMS should not ride for free. Ask your dad what he thinks. Since you possess zero tools to help in a situation perhaps you should learn some first then see what you have when the stuff really starts to roll down hill, actually you should hope you have one of us on YOUR train to bail you out.

Yes. The federal government can repossess apparatus from a department and then sell it back to them at a premium, just like they can mandate that each of the department's members carry their own health insurance.

The new radios will have precinct frequencies in them, so that we can switch over if need be. Current Vertex radios used in the precincts have the capability to monitor, but not transmit on Transit frequencies (precinct are UHF, Transit is VHF) My first two commands Transit Manhattan Task Force, and TD 1 issued radios to the officers. My current command, TD 12 does not have enough radios to individually issue them, so we must sign one out every tour. Since it is not your personal radio, no one takes care of them, and they are in poor condition. Antennas are often broken, threads stripped and knobs missing.
Islander, after you left, sometime around 2006 the Transit CAD was replaced with the Sprint system used topside. That cut down on a lot of the delay in getting heavy jobs to both Transit and Precincts radios. Only problem now is we in Transit often get notified for jobs like robberies, assaults in progress, burglaries, etc that are no where close to any subway station. No more "Central can I get the CN"
I always love when the dispatchers think there is a problem with the radio network. Often you hear central "Can any unit in the field advise how you read central" The replies can be hilarious, "like a book central", "left to right", "hooked on phonics central"

AFD does not stay in their own neighborhood, I have seen them all over the East Bronx, from top to bottom, in the South Bronx, and I have seen them up on the Hutch by the Westchester line, they just hop in their rig and ride around the Bronx, buffing jobs.
I heard from several people, that when AFD shut down after 9/11, it seems a couple of them banded together and formed the "Volunteer Bronx Fire Patrol". They would ride around and buff jobs in an privately registered SUV (not any volley rig, but a personal car)) that had flashing lights and cheap stickers marking it as the "Bronx Volunteer Fire Patrol". I encountered two of them at a vehicle accident, maybe five years ago or so- ( I am NYPD and was operating at the accident) and, never having heard of the "Bronx Fire Patrol" ( I am also a former member of the New York Fire Patrol,) so l wondered who they were. They got out of the rig, and without asking the NYPD or FDNY what was happening, they just started directing traffic. The did this without asking NYPD or FDNY, or even telling us so that we might coordinate efforts. I asked them a couple of simple questions, like "who are you guys-who sent you here? and I received no satifactory answer, other than ...."Uhh"..."who" "what"...."daba daba"... and related comments. I went over to a Battalion aide and asked if he knew who they were, he said he had seen them at jobs before, but did not know who they were. With that, it seemed that as soon as I turned my back, they hopped into their SUV and left the scene before I could ask any more questions.. I said to myself that the next time I saw them, I would make it so that they would receive many summones (or arrest) and impound the car. I was transferred shortly after that to another assignment that took me out of the area, I regret not taking the time out that day to go track down the SUV and put it on paper.

Believe all of what you see, half of what you hear, and none of what you read - especially when it's a forward from Facebook. Additionally, as someone who used to be an active volunteer EMT in NJ, this article doesn't even come close to addressing the training. Moreover, it is part of the EMT curriculum in NJ, as well as in EVOC and in CEVO, that according to Title 39, the only vehicle that is lawfully allowed to speed anywhere within the State's contiguous borders is a police car. So maybe we shouldn't paint the entire state as in need of "new standards" because of a few dumbass statements by an 18 year old in a college "newspaper." (And, I'm willing to bet that the whole thing about 100 MPH was solely so he can look cool and possibly get lucky at the next frat party.)

Everyone has opinions about everything. Heck, I have my own opinions about this. But one has to ask the question...
WHAT DOES IT MATTER WHAT A FIRE DISTRICT / DEPARTMENT DOES WITH IT'S MONEY IF IT ISN'T BEING USED ILLEGALLY?!
I don't live in Yorktown, nor am I in their fire district. My money says that they've done some kind of homework to decide that adding a third station will be of some benefit in some way, shape or form.
Sure there may not be a fire down this way for many years. And perhaps guys don't live close to this station. But if there is a fire one day, and the Engine in that fire station gets there first, puts out the fire quickly and possible saves someone's life - I'd bet dollars to donuts that everyone will sing it's praises.
I don't understand the hypocricies that go on here sometimes. Everyone wants to be "brothers" when they need something, but so many people are so quick to start criticizing others.

This conversation is nice and is full of lots of speculation, but it is just that... So why not try to get some factual answers as to what the plan actually is?
As I am not a commissioner, I will not comment either in favor of or against their project, but my suggestions is that if any of the members of this website have questions the best action would be to attend the Pubic Board of Fire Commissioners Meetings next tuesday night at station 2 and ask your questions in person or write a letter to the Yorktown Heights Board of Fire Commissioners and ask all of your questions. Go to the source and maybe we can understand what their thought process is.

I, too, have sat back long enough reading these posts and feel the need to finally comment:
    1. As far as the "said" department, they need to work on a schedule system so that they don't have to keep relying on their mutual aid departments.
    2. As for the "facility" that the "said" department keeps going to, they HAVE spoken with the "head honchos" and they HAVE given them fines. I happen to work at the "facility", so I know this for a fact! The "facility" does NOTHING to correct the problems.
    3. LOSAP - how can you compare that to a regular pension? I certainly hope your "real job" pension is more than $300/month!
    4. A paid department in the Town of Mt. Pleasant? Are you kidding??? As a life-long resident of the Town, I for one would get on a bandwagon to vote down such a proposal. To increase our already high taxes to cover false alarms - which, yes, that is the majority of calls, would be totally ridiculous and would run every "old timer" out of the Town. My suggestion - grow a set of "balls" and start cracking down on members who are refusing to drive and/or respond. Or go back to the automatic dual response.
    5. I think most departments have "frequent flyers" or facilities that call on a regular basis. Unfortunately, you are required to respond no matter what. The standpoint I take is when the call comes in, just think if YOU were that person or your family member waiting for that fire truck or ambulance, how would you feel if they didn't show up???
By the way, I sympathize with the "said" department because I believe most departments have been there at one time or another. They just need to address the issues head on and come up with a solution, so that people like problEMS don't get on here strictly to "stir the pot".

When I was at the academy, we were told that when interacting with the public, first you ask them to do something. If that doesn't work, then you tell them. If that doesn't work, then you make them. If it comes down to making someone do something, and you're dealing with a gang like MS-13, if you drop a couple of F-bombs, then so be it. The Chief in this case obviously hasn't been on the street in quite some time.
And I whole heartedly agree with what Chief Bratton's estimation of why officer-related deaths are up this year. The sad fact of the matter is that everyone has a mobile camera and most of which offer the capability of instant upload of data to the Internet, namely Youtube. Cops are holding back, and in places like New York, where it seems as if everytime something in the way of a use of force occurs, the cop is the perp and the perp is the victim, it leads to very disasterous consequences.
