Or they can continue to spend money on studies until they get the one they are looking for.

This study went quietly into the sunset and why you ask?... Maybe it's because it's not what somebody wanted to hear.

I just sent Mr Polet an email. Lets see if he responds. It would be nice if we could all send him a short but sweet email and load up his inbox. I will post any response he may have.
    Mr Polet

I read in disbelief the totally clueless view you have of the fire service. Let me fill you in on a total misguidance in this country. The need for a college education taught by clueless people as yourself. As I prepare to send my first child to higher education in 3 years I often second guess any encouragement I may give. The colleges and universities charge outrageous prices to brainwash our youth into believing what clowns like you are teaching. This in turn will breed more clowns like you to brainwash more of our youth. More kids should be encouraged to join the trades and earn an honest living and forget about $200,000.00 worth of debt to sit in a classroom and be taught by someone with your "expertise". Get off your educational high horse Mr Polet. You and all your colleagues do not impress me.

Mr Polet, I have been a career firefighter for 19 years now in an urban fire dept in NYS. I pray that you and your family never need the assistance of my Brothers in Holland. I will also pray Mr Polet that if in fact you do need assistance from my Brothers in Holland that they show the courage and professionalism we all have.

Incident Type: Basement fire in a PD
    Location: 25 Beechtree dr
    District:E23,L13
    Units:E23, E21, E22, E25, L13, TL11, 2302, 2301, 30A2 NRPD

    Description: Residential fire alarm
    E23 E21 L13 TL11 2302 dispatched to Automatic fire alarm.
E23 L13 10/84 nothing showing. During size up E23 transmits the 10/75 for heavy smoke in the home through the windows L13 forcing entry and E 23 stretching in.
E22 E25 added to the box
E23 reports basement fire stretching down the stairs
    All hands working
Just another routine residential fire alarm? I think not. Homeowner was not home at the time to meet first arriving companies and a total 360 performed by first due companies shows why there is no such call as routine. Nice stop by all NRFD units working Thanksgiving morning. This homeowner certainly has something to be thankful for this year!!

I believe the title of the thread was - not good for PUBLIC PERCEPTION, its not what is legal or not, its what the public views. A chiefs car from a district far away at a mall in this climate is most definitely noticed. People make comments when we shop for meals, they think the department pays for our meals outright, they have no clue its paid out of our own pockets. Its not what is actual fact anymore, its what a budget conscious public views.

The title of this thread includes "Public Perception". It has to do with how the public perceives it. If the public does not like it, and if they b**ch enough, you can guarantee the laws, rules or bylaws will change.
The public appears to becoming more and more concerned how money is spent.
    Just my opinion!

Somebody above asked if John Q. Public really cares. I can tell you, yes they do. We are no longer allowed to go to the grocery store or run any kind of errands while on duty. Why, you ask? Because John Q. Public cried. Loud. My LT got written up one day for returning a movie. We were in the store for minutes, and had been on a call just prior in the area. Didn't matter. Someone cried. He got chewed.
So, yes, they are watching and yes, they do care how their dollars and cents are being spent.

I don't know, nor do I care, what this Chief was doing, that business is between him, his Department and those who foot the bill. But what should be clear to everyone by now is that we are ALL under scrutiny...everyday, everywhere, anytime, any place. Whether it's driving dept vehicles or simply wearing FD apparel think before you act...or speak. A moment of carelessness and you just might find yourself plastered all over Youtube, and the fodder for forums like this...or worse still, in the unemployment line on the evening news trying to explain yourself.

Also remaining local units (ln this case Engine 24) would not be able to hear/talk to the mutual aid units (if they switched to county 18) as locals stay on local dispatch. E24, Sq11, L75 & B2 responded to a smoke in a structure downtown, they need to hear/talk to each other.

Now that many have adequate fireground handi-talkies for use at a fire scene, thus not interfering with the dispatch frequency and visa versa, why at a routine fire must mutual aid companies switch to a county channel if these units have compatablity with the local frequency. Doing this the relocated units have no idea what is going on with the fire and what to expect unless they constantly switch the radio and the folks at the fire have no idea what is going on in the rest of the City unless they do the same..
Certainly, a massive event with many units coming in, a common frequency would be warranted

I think I might hire the construction laborer. If you had a shi*^y job, at least you realize what a good job firefighting is. If after all his education, aptitude, certifications and so on, the laborer still beat him by a point. That says a lot for that laborer. Maybe he never had enough money to pay for higher education. Maybe he bought a couple of prep books and studied every chance he got.
One thing you do know is that he has a job that requires hard work at sometimes menial tasks, and sometimes for hours at a time. (Sound familiar to those firefighters out there?) And amazingly he still beat the paramedic by a point!
Paramedics, don't get your knickers in a knot. I still like you and I'm not the one who picked "paramedic vs. laborer" to be the example. When the Yankees play the Red Sox, if Boston scores just one more run than the Yankees, guess who loses?
The test is given every four years because the demand on jobs isn't there. If the test were every year the b**** would be "Why do they give the test every year to 1000 people and then hire only 50 a year?
Scantron tests that take six months for a list to be posted is beyond me. You'll just have to ask somebody else about how that works.
Qualifying before hiring is done in Florida. See how many people are disgruntled because they spent so much time and money qualifying and never got hired. Does the statement "You have to be a firefighter before you can become a firefighter" make any sense to you?

I might be biased because I got the job, but I don't see anything wrong with the system as it is. If you want to be a Firefighter, then you should have a "whatever it takes" attitude to get on.

    1) That would violate the federal court mandate for 900 of the approximatly 1150 jobs in Westchester
    2) But the test already does that and it would violate the federal court mandate for 900 of the approximatly 1150 jobs in Westchester
    3) You think the computer part will reduce cost (it will and I agree it should go that way) this would increase the cost dramatically.
    4) The majority of our latest hires all have degrees and most are in their 30's. They perform better on the test and even on the physical agility (seams they listen to the suggestions on how to improve times).
    5) That would violate the federal court mandate for 900 of the approximatly 1150 jobs in Westchester
    6) see #3 above
    7) Its not, you still have to outscore on the physical agility test
    8) True, but then we should have entry tests for all EMT classes, there are a lot of "kids" that cant pass that class also.
    9) That would violate the federal court mandate for 900 of the approximatly 1150 jobs in Westchester
    10) That might help individules but the test is about hiring the best for the department, not about improving the individuals ability to pass. Also if I worked my a** off to score well and you sat back, why should you be rewarded?
