Three tillers @ the same time interesting question.

Truck 2 Station two was a tiller, 1957 LaFrance, It was replaced by a Maxim tiller and was sent to Sta. 7 so that accounts for two @ the same time. Truck 1 at Hq was replaced with a Maxim tiller also in the early '70s so I guess there was a time that WP ran all tillers.

At the time of the closure of Sta. 5 the City of White Plains was in the last (I believe) phase of the New York state mandated reduction in the work week from 56 to 40 hours. True to the practice of running short staffed the city closed Sta. 5 rather than hire the additional manpower needed to accommodate the hour reduction. It then spread the troops around to the other fire stations. As Paul Harvey was fond of saying "that is the rest of the story".

Yes the Seagrave was replaced by old Eng. 6 (70) ALF when the first Maxim was placed in service. The ALF had a 500 gallon tank and a 1,000 GPM pump which came in handy fighting fires at the Gedney Way land fill caused by hot ashes that were dumped there from the incinerator.

WPPD has been dispatching for WPFD for at least 15 yrs. They still can't get it right.

I rec'd an e-mail from a retired WPFD member who said he was hired with Sal and they attended the New Haven FD academy together. This was prior to WPFD constructing their own facility. This fire fighter was called back to duty on the night of the fire and was present when Sal was found.

We have no written policy on resetting the alarm but as long as there is no password required to reset we will do it before we clear the scene if the building is unoccupied.

Since I am retired I do not have access to that info.

Check with the law dep't/counsel of your municipality and get their opinion.

My former dep't had a policy that we did not reset alarm systems.

The law dep't stated that the fire dep't would be liable once it reset the system should the system malfunction.

Going back to the early '60s the only tractor drawn aerial was the 1957 ALF that was assigned to old Sta. 2.

Sometime in the mid to late '60s a Maxim open cab tractor drawn aerial was purchased, followed several years later by another Maxim tractor drawn aerial with a closed cab for driver & tillerman.

Many years ago the WPFD ladder rundown was: Trk1 (60-control L-32) assigned to fire Hdq'ts

Trk 2 (60 control L-33) assigned to Sta. 2 on Hamilton Ave.

Trk 3 (60 control L-34) assigned to Sta. 7

TL-6 came along with the opening of the current

Sta. 2 which was converted from the old bus garage as part of

urban renewal.

This was the brainchild of a former chief and current DPW commissioner. Strictly a penny pinching move.

Junk from the first day it arrived.

If the supply line had been laid along the curb before charging, the ladder could have been located in front of the fire building.

Along the way this ig was converted to a 6-71 Dertoit DieseL Motor in house..

When it retired, if found a new home in Louisiana drove and tillered all the way home.

I was behind a guy in the checkout line the other day. He had on an old faded FD T-shirt with a picture of a 1950s era open cab Seagrave.

Yes, WPFD had four Seagraves, the one pictured as well as Eng. 67 were 1,000 GPM with 300 gallon tanks.

The other two, Eng. 65 & 71 were 750 GPM with 150 gallon tanks.

One of the 750s was retired to Fairview for either reserve/ parade duty.

The real deal.
