While I have every confidence these men will get their jobs back, voters can be fickle and it may turn out that it won't be the Chief's having something shoved where the sun doesn't shine. Like all things fire...hope for the best, plan for the worst

This is about the only post thus far that I agree with 100%. It's their homes, their tax dollars and their lives so let the people decide. And which ever way it goes that's the end of the matter, for the people will have spoken.

WOW! A must read. Some really complicated, issues, to say the least.

Enclosing the cab would involve moving the turntable back about 3 feet which means re chassis-ing the rig.  It also means the rig wouldn't fit in the firehouse well enough to make the turns out of the bay. For our circumstances the refurb option was/is the best choice. This rig has plenty of life left in her, especially in our little corner of Stamford. Keeping her pretty much to her original design is actually a benefit here since she can go where no other new monster aerial can.

    Seth,
TL-45 is now due to rejoin the fleet early next year. If all goes well, by mid January. She is getting a fairly extensive refit with a new body, axles, brakes and upgrades to the wiring and hydraulics where necessary. When she returns to service the only thing will be left that's original is the boom, which has a good 15 to 20 years left on it...especially in Asbestosville..uh ahem I mean Belltown.

Beyond that Alan there is also the cadre of officers/leadership that meet a requirement or creates their own standard and then prevents anyone else from being able to attain it. Some call that job security, I call self serving, but either way it ultimately causes big problems in succession not to mention morale.

A crack was found in the last section of the boom on TL-45 and it is now being replaced. With that there are no longer any components on the rig that are original.

Made racial slurs, admitted it and got suspended (IMO should've been demoted) = justice.  Got booted without being able to defend himself (even if he was dead wrong and may deserve it) = injustice.  Wants reinstatement and $10.2 million in damages = Insanity

When a man becomes a fireman his greatest act of bravery has been accomplished. What he does after that is all in the line of work.
-- Chief Edward F. Croker, FDNY,

Our recognition comes from within - within our communities, within our departments and most of all within ourselves.  There is no accolade, award or prize that can ever adequately acknowledge the service of a fireman and none of us stand above the rest.  Yes, it's true, some may perform acts above and beyond the call of duty, but the simple act of becoming a fireman has already placed each of us in our Hall of Fame.

Some 54 years ago it is still the most Tragic Day throughout the Fire Service of Connecticut.  That day on April 3, 1962, when FOUR Norwich, Ct Firefighters lost their lives in a chemical explosion which occurred on Forest St in that city. It is known as the Van Tassel Explosion taking the lives of Fire Captain William Sheridan, Firefighter Leonard Counihan, Firefighter Edward Ramano, and Firefighter Carl Burke.

The only two firefighters to survive this explosion were Firefighters Thomas Demauro, who has since passed on, and Fire Lt Thomas LaFrenere. Retired Lt Tom LaFrenere had to face what no other firefighter in the State of Connecticut had to face. The loss of Four of his Brother Firefighters at one incident.

Here is Lt LaFrenere as he talks in 2012 at the dedication of a Firefighter Memorial on the 50th Anniversary of that Tragic Day in April, 1962.
