I'd guess a lot has to do with where this storm hits. Even with a predicted southern NJ landfall, heavy wind and rain effects will be felt for several hundred miles around the center.
Once tropical storm conditions (sustained winds >39MPH) are imminent, as observed by the National Weather Service, local districts need to make a hard decision if it's going to be too dangerous for students and staff to be out and about traveling to and from school due to wind and possible flooding.
NY City Transit is already planning on shutting their systems down to protect the riding public, their staff and equipment should tropical storm conditions and flooding become apparent.
And I'll echo Madison: Stay safe everyone!

This whole issue is preposterous....just another way the NFPA helps line the pockets of Morning Pride and all the other gear manufacturers. The city pays about $225 for a helmet. Over a 10 year period they're going to buy about 1,000 helmets a year. That's almost a quarter of a million dollars a year on helmets...what a complete waste of money.
Now....as for making guys pay $100 bucks to keep it; that B.S. too. I think we all DO get a little attached to our helmet and why shouldn't we be able to keep it? All the job is going to do with it is throw it in the garbage. Why bang a guy over the the head for $100?

We are unveiling a new site very soon. Our current site has had issues so we've been using Facebook to show everyone our latest stuff.

How many depts. have trouble getting 4 trained interior firefighters to a call in a timely manor?
Yes having a up to date website is nice, but how many depts are struggling (do to lack of time and personnel) just to cover basic response?

I also enjoy when the departments who neglect to keep their websites up to date or even looking somewhat professional and refuse to allow someone to update them or improve them. Social networking via a department website or a facebook/twitter can be so valuable. Seems that some members (older?) are against this. The excuses are always great... 'It will get hacked." "It will get viruses." "No one uses the internet." "I don't use the internet or Facebook." It's 2012...time to upgrade your approach to contacting the public.

With the engine-tanker concept just remember it will not be able to fulfill both roles at a working fire. It will either be an engine, or a tanker and if you are dealing with a rural water supply, you may have to call in additional resources as a result. Also not sure how this would reflect in your ISO if an engine and a tanker a required for your area, but now you have one piece to fill both roles. Then again, most of the places around here have a rating of 9.
