Agreed with what everyone else has been saying, way to think outside the box!

Sounds like the rescue has to be immediate since the victim's position will rapidly become untenable.
Lay one ladder on the ground where the butt of a second ladder will be placed. Like an Ice rescue, that ladder on the ground will spread the weight. Use the stirrups at the heel of the climbing ladder to connect to the ladder on the ground.
    PS
NEXT, CALL THE TV STATION AND THE BUILDING INSPECTOR.
When the reporter arrives, tell him/her to ask the building inpector "How did this fiasco ever get approved?"

You arrive at this building which is becoming well involved from what you can see in the front and sides. There are two people trapped in a back office by a window by the flames. Their only exit is the back windows:

    But you have one complication:

Get a ground ladder? Don't think so. The back is wet marshland that will sink you to your hips.

Another problem to consider is that the floors in this building are somewhat thin. So, how would you handle this rescue?
  5. FF398 liked a post in a topic by Remember585 in EMS and Lift Assists for FD & PD
Perhaps someone has an actual answer to this and not just opinions.
Why do some fire and police departments respond to EMS calls that aren't CFRs, EMTs or Medics? What is the point and what value does it have for the patient or victim to have untrained people standing there with them, waiting on an ambulance?
As for lift assists, why do PDs and FDs handle these? Is there any kind of liability if "XYZ PD" or "FD" responds on a lift assist, moves a patient and further injures them?
I only ask because our FD only responds at the request of EMS, but discussion has come up about lift assists and what to do when the ambulance doesn't get out for a lift assist. Should Mutual Aid have to handle it, or is another emergency service in town (PD or FD) capable to handle this?
On a personal note, if there's a call for a cardiac arrest, I think no harm would come from sending all 3 services if they have AEDs - get someone with the right equipment to the scene as soon as possible.
    Thanks

Wow! Considering the fact that 252 had water out the windows and the fire knocked down within a couple of minutes of arrival, it appears that your criticism is fairly harsh and uncalled for. It appears that 252 took the hydrant that was closest to the fire building, I don't see another hydrant on the block had they passed up the one that they hooked up to. I didn't see any truckies running, it did appear that a couple of firefighters were jogging toward 252's rig (probably firefighters from the 2nd due engine coming to assist with stretching the first line). I agree that reckless running at a fire scene could cause a slip / fall incident, but there does need to be an accelerated (albeit controlled) level of movement by responding personnel due to the rapidity of fire growth coupled with the dangers of smoke, heat and toxic gases on exposed victims as well as firefighters who are operating in the fire area as well as above it.
To the Firefighters who operated at this incident, a job well done.

Nothing against the hard work of the moderators (particularly in this case FDNY 10-75) But this section is hurting the quality of EMTBravo.
I enjoy seeing what depts are getting. but this is just filler. This morning 80% of the recent board is about rigs being delivered or that might be put out to bid. With half the info either unknown or TBD.
Meanwhile it replaced, a LODD thread, Chains, Grants and other great threads.
If posters have real info on a new rig great, lets see. But this is just filler and is taking away from what makes EMTbravo great.
    Rant over.

I took this shot of the City of Poughkeepsie this past August from the Hudson River Walkway...... It was taken at dusk just before the walkway closes (Which BTW, also happens to be the optimal time for photography) and I almost didn't finish it... I had a few minutes to go and then I had a less that pleasurable encounter with a NYSPP officer who apparently was having an off day  ......... They put in and make a big deal about all this LED energy efficient lighting and yet the walkway closes at dusk.....Go figure...
I have printed this out on my printer at a size of 24" high by 120" wide and it is highly detailed...... I have a friend who has as a 24" H x ~80" W version and his kids had it framed for him as a Christmas gift.... It now occupies his living room and it looks gorgeous..... I have many other landscape panoramas that I have done and my intent is to try to sell these as a means to pay some of my photography expenses...... Doing the fire photography has put me in the hole as far as expenses go and hopefully I can use photos such as this to offset some of my expenses.....
If you have yet to go to the walkway, you should do it...... It really is a great place to go .....

Greetings all. I have been member on this site for a long time, and at the moment I am also an assistant Chief with the Elmont FD. I will not get into specifics at this point, but just wanted to say a few things.
First, the Elmont FD is in no way racist, nor is the company in question trying to incite a racist point of view. Like it or not the nickname "rebels" and the use of the confederate flag has been a somewhat popular choice of fire companies for decades. Im sure you all know of a company somewhere called the "rebels". Hell just google "fire Dept. maltese cross rebel flag sticker" and you will see a dozen designs for your helmet and other applications from many fire service stores.
Second, the company was organized in 1924, and at the time was the only company on the East End of the district, away from the other then 3 existing companies in the West all a few blocks from each other. Back in the day the competition between fire companies was probably more fierce then it is today. The other companies did not want them to be located at that end of the district and "beat" them to the fires in that part of town. They got the nickname of the rebels because they went against the grain from day 1. The nickname rebels was born for being "different" not being racist.
This all said, the flag does bring about some strong feelings from many folks, and in the end we exsist to serve the public not offend them. I will leave it at that for now.
    Be safe all.

The New Hackensack Fire Department, Town of Wappinger Ambulance/TransCare, Stat-Flight, and the NYSP - Wappinger operated at this auto accident with entrapment on the evening of January 6th......

Personnel arrived to find a heavily damaged vehicle in an unstable position with an adult male occupant with head trauma. Here a firefighter stabilizes the front of the vehicle.

    From the front.....

A charged hoseline is in place as crews get to work.....

A Lieutenant stays with the patient as crews start their task of removing the roof under the watchful eye of a TransCare Medic.

The position the vehicle came to rest in made for a slightly challenging extrication.

Firefighters make one of many relief cuts in the vehicles roof.....

The precarious position of the vehilce made for some awkward cutting positions.....

"Don't let that go" Firefighters lift the roof.....

TransCare medics get access to their patient.....

Medics work on the patient as firefighters begin to clean up......

These are photos of Rombout Fire Departments structure fire that occurred at 226 Windsor Rd just before midnight on Sunday. Firefighters arrived to find fire through the roof of a ~ 4500 sq ft residence with high winds, heavy snow, white-out conditions, and near zero wind chill ...... Perfect weather for firefighting....... Firefighters apparently attempted an interior attack but were forced to retreat due to insufficent water and rapid fire spread due to the high winds...... I arrived as Command advised that they were going defensive....... I had a tough time keeping my lens free of snow and debris due to the high winds and only shot with one of two cameras I normally shoot with as a result...... This was clearly a frustrating fire for all who were there.....

A shot from the front...... Hughsonvilles FAST Team and Village of Fishkill......

It was snowing heavily and very windy.......

Hey, I found a hot spot........

A shot from the rear..... These guys were inside under the fire but had to pull out due to rapidly deteriorating conditions......

    Insurmountable odds.....

With the wind fanning the fire and water issues.... Crews were ordered to pull back their lines and were clearly frustrated that they were defeated .....

This is shot of the Central Hudson gas man..... He had just retrieved the power meter but said "I killed the power but It's up to guys to turn off the gas.... It's too damn hot!"

While a tanker shuttle was being initiated, Rombout's Tower gets set up......

Village of Fishkill firefighters watch as 62-45 hits the fire......

    The end.....

These reports do nothing but point fingers. Although constructive in many regards they probably really destroy the feelings and emotions of those involved as the responsibility is usually placed on them. This was one of those incidents that was 100% avoidable but either complacency or the DESIRE to help, which is I think the real culprit killed these two guys. Unfortunately we can only learn from our mistakes, and I hope the death of these two men does not fall on deaf ears.
I also hope that this allows the family to have some type of closure on the whole incident.

Sorry for jumping in so late in the discussion. but irish fire is right. I was on the job for 34 years and went to schools, seminars, etc. right up to the time I retired. Some of us go to these classes just to get certificates and unfortunately forget the course material in a week or two. On the other hand, you could have irishfire's attitude: Learn it from those who have been there> remember it> and put it in your back pocket because you might need it some time in the future when you least expect it. It should also come out of that back pocket every now and then for a review. Irishfire, Tommy Brennan would be proud of you.
And Barry: Mofire is young. Don't jump on him when he asks a question. All your information is absolutely correct, but as soon as you jumped on his case, you turned him off.
Cids (or whatever you may call buildings' info database) is a very time consuming effort and takes a lot of work by all members of a FD to initiate and then to keep current. Not a knock, but it is something that volunteer FDs just don't have the time or people to devote.
Everyone, paid or vol should find time to do company inspections, at least of your area's target hazards if nothing else. Wouldn't it be nice if your first time in a building is during a company inspection as opposed to 3an on your hands and knees?
And about that back pocket irishfire talked about...It's like a magic pocket. No matter how much "stuff" you put in it, it never gets full.
There...you got my two cents. Take it to heart and it may be worth a lot more to you

It seems everytime I log onto this website, somebody is going off on some tangent about how much they know about this, that, and the other thing. Everybody needs to be on some foolish power trip. Constructive criticism is a great thing but every topic gets alittle irate! I mean look at you guys, its turning into a science class...lol In my honest opinion, nobody got hurt and all that needs to be said about firefighting is stay in the books, know your operating procedures, know your buildings, get good at reading smoke, and let circumstances dictate procedures!

Come on Barry. With all due respect, planning and training are all good and well. But you know, as well as i, that alot of these commercial occupancies may change what they are storing on a daily basis. Even a Career department (such as the one you are affiliated with) with Inspectors/Marshalls may not be able to keep up with whats going on in these places.
Responding to ANY emergency, we must always be on alert and prepared for ANYTHING. However, there are times when things are out of our control.
Happy thanksgiving to you sir and your family, stay safe.
