On 12/4, the members of Hughsonville FD in the Town of Wappingers helped make a little boys 11th birthday unforgettable. Christopher, the son of a close friend to my wife and I, has been diagnosed with "Leg-Calf Perthies", a bone disorder that has caused the complete deterioration of his right femur. Christopher has been confined to a wheel chair and has recently found out that he will be undergoing the first of several surgeries at Boston Childrens Hospital the week of Christmas. To celebrate his Birthday his family chose to rent the hall at HFD, seeing as Christopher has always loved the fire service. When the members of HFD found out what a fan of the fire department Christopher is they decided to give him a few gifts of their own. Sporting an HFD helmet and a huge grinn, Christopher was pushed through the engine room by the Captian of HFD and given his own personal VIP tour of the station. He almost jumped out of his wheel chair when the Lieutenant pulled "THE BEAST" (45-55 and Christophers favorite truck) into the back lot and sat him in the drivers seat. His eyes lit up as he was lifted into the bucket of the Tower Ladder and his smile could be seen for miles as the HFD members all accepted his challange to a "wheel chair race". I have two:
I used to live on a tiny street that led out to a main state road. We had a call (volly) for a baby seizing in the house on the corner of the tiny street and the main rd. The address of the house was on the tiny street. As I came down that small road looking for the address, the elderly homeowner (pt's grandma) was on the tiny street, in the dark, waving me over. It was a febrile seizure. No big deal, but the family was well panicked. They needed more care then the baby did. After the EMS crew left, and I was leaving to go back home I saw the elderly lady who had waved me and asked her why she was not in the main road waiting for a first responder. I never met her before in my life. She said, "I have seen you come by with your blue light, so I knew you would be here."
#2. I was going to the hardware store in Sept of 2010, in my own car. Call came in for a bee sting reaction less than a minute away. I was about 10 minutes from the EMS station. I went to the call, with a BVM and a radio. I was led through the house to the back deck, where a lady was dying. Blue as blue, no detectable pulse, foam coming out of the mouth. Some movement in hands. + bee sting in last 3 minutes. I advised on the radio of the arrest, got her supine and began to bag her. Other members arrived and we began CPR. I updated the crew to bring the Epi-pen, AED and suction, which they did.
My day job is a medic. I don't know which end of the pen the epi even comes out of! (ball breaking comments gratefully accepted; and deserved) This kid from WEMS (who we use to staff our ambulances)came charging around the back yard, epi pen in outstretched hand and slammed that thing into this lady like Ahab harpooning Moby-Dick. The CPR was flawless and the scene time short. NO MEDIC available. Closest ED was Putnam. On loading the pt, she had a weak carotid pulse, a nearly useless respiratory effort and was still blue. On the was to the ED, the WEMS kid called med control and got orders for the SECOND epi-pen! (again, I am a medic. Who knew you you could do that?)
Someone introduced me to the patient this year at the towns 2011 September 11 ceremony. I was speechless. I said "I haven't seen you since..." She finished the sentence, "Since I died. My new birthday is coming up this month." The luck of me being close, but mostly the aggressive no-delay treatment by the WEMS crew and the good CPR by the other extra folks who arrived on scene without a doubt yanked that lady straight out of the grave. NO MEDIC involved. Putnam could not do an intercept. One of the top 5 hottest job in my 30 years, but credit goes to the other guys. I hope they see this.

Seriously dude, you're going to tell me that you never moved another emergency vehicle or had one moved for you? And if someone was trying to do the right thing and help you out by moving a police car you'd collar them? Nice.
And I can't believe you're actually suggesting that the driver of the ambulance positioned the vehicle to "inconvenience" others on the road. See my other comment about urban parking problems but more to the point is the EMT did what he/she had to do and was completely justified. Should they really have gone hunting for a parking space?

Does it occur to you that if the woman had just heeded the officer's admonition about not moving the ambulance and went to work, none of this would have happened? Instead she interfered with them on the scene and had the temerity to go to the PD to make a complaint. Clearly she didn't get the point so to reinforce that point now she'll find out how the judicial system works. It's not the EMT's fault that this woman talked herself right into handcuffs.

It would have been an even greater story, if she left you millions in her will.....

Secret public fire dist elections? As another member pointed out already, they are announced with a legal notice in the news paper as required by law. I'm sorry if you feel you are getting screwed by your dist. but I fail to see where this has any relevance to the topic.
Now for the topic at hand, This was the way that Mahopac FD and I'm sure the family wanted to honor a respected member who was murdered. If you would have done so differently than so be it.
Instead of tearing them apart, why don't we practice some of this "brotherhood" that so many of you claim to beleive in and show our support to the Mahopac FD as they mourn the loss of a beloved member. Or did we all forget that during this battle of egos?

Great copy and paste, but a ridiculous point when you say "call the following people". I'm getting really tired of you throwing peoples' names around. Have some respect that you claim to major in apparently. You've made your point about the Mahopac fireman. Obviously some agree, and some don't. DO NOT start throwing around deceased Brothers and Sisters names here. How dare you!

Thanks for the input guys. I want to try and reach out to members that are LEO's here and get their input. I will stress the point that this thread is in no way ment to criticize or offend in any way how law enforcement operates or their practices. This is just an honest thought i have been mulling over for quite some time.

After speaking briefly with one of the moderators I have decided to go ahead and start this thread. This was a thought I have been contemplating for quite some time. I travel the TSP everyday to work and often ask myself as I pass a trooper on a traffic stop, "Why don't these guys wear the safety vests?"
DOT requires that emergency personnel operating on roadways wear an ANSI approved traffic safety vest. My thought is, If we wear them with FD and EMS, than why dont LEO's wear them? I understand the tactical aspect of the job may be inhibited by the vest but as far as a traffic stop or detail, why not have it on?
