I knew cortlandts number was out of place, didn't know about the va. Thanks for the info. It's great to have seasoned vets such as yourself around to get some facts. Thanks again.

Hats off for a job well done. All too often we hear of negative outcomes when a child goes missing. Great to hear they were able to locate her quickly.

One thing you failed to mention in your post (unless I missed it) is that you can be the most highly trained, competent firefighter in the business, yet if you cannot work with others, your completely useless to the fire service.

Never mind 3am. What about 2pm on a weekday? I've seen departments roll out with two full engines and a full truck at 3am and can't even get a driver in the afternoon.

There are plenty of volly chiefs who are certified beyond the credentials that you specify. There are plenty who aren't. There are also plenty of career chiefs that litter suburbia with the minimum certifications required to attain the position, who have been placed there through political influence and have no business commanding a girl scout troop selling cookies let alone let alone a fire-rescue response. Your post seems to be more pointed towards a vollie vs. career discussion rather than actually having data to support whether or not volunteer chiefs in a particular municipality have the appropriate certifications to attend a training event that could potentially improve the outcome of an emergency that may occur in their first due response area.

    NO, I DID NOT!
(Actually, I was just taking a ride with the grandkids.)
Now that you brought that up, there were other difficulties on the trip that all our training doesn't touch upon. The kids got ice cream at the marina when we first started out. Five minutes out, Brayden stepped on his popsickle and wanted to return for a new one. His father explained that the wrapper was still intact, so it was still good, then showed him how you could use a popsickle stick as a spoon. Training does a lot, but sometimes ya just gotta wing it.

Chief, I believe in giving credit where credit is due and in this case it is. Great job to you and your son. Not just for saving two lives that day but also for being able to quickly recall your training and put it into action. As you mentioned, two separate generation firefighters were able to quickly and efficiently work together to mitigate a situation In which life could have been lost. I am not trying to soak up your 15 minutes of fame here, just quite impressed that two people who took a training class almost five decades apart were able to work as smoothly and efficiently as you were. That being said, I will leave you alone. Stay safe folks.

Settle down folks. This thread was started as an informative thread for those interested. If you have no interest in parades, don't read the thread. There I no reason to resort to childish arguments.

I don't think the issue is so much the gift shop as it is the items being sold. This is what I gather from news articles and speaking to people I know that have been to te museum.

Great shot! I've always loved the BRATs. Can you tell me please, what is the "Knolls atomic power laboratory" and why do they need such a rig? I'm just not familiar with that part of the state.

Great anecdote from a retired Deputy Chief of the Syracuse FD.

    Best line in the story:
"Because if you don't have company esprit d'corp...if you don't think you're good, no one else will...and these guys were good"

I think that before you take to the keyboard you should get the facts. You make quite a serious allegation of your department being influenced by an outside source, do you know this to be true? Question these types of things in house before going to the all mighty internet.
Now as far as the policy, good job! They are kids in school. Schooling is required for a job, a job is required to feed a family. I don't think my volunteer department had ever bought dinner for my kids.

If a department cannot "mess" with a persons service award points, how do you explain disciplinary suspension?
