  1. Got my letter too for June 2nd
  2. *DISCLAIMER* This is not a Hospital vs FDNY response. Currently, there is about 125 Voluntary units in the system. Montefiore North (Old OLM) so far has been the only hospital to drop their EMS system without the entire hospital closing. While I have heard the same stories about fdny pushing the hospitals out of 911, I don't think at this point in the City's budget or FDNY resources, they would be able to handle putting out 125 trucks to cover all at once. I do know that the fire department does want all 911 EMS to be run by them eventually, but when is hard to say. You have large networks like NY-Presby and LIJ that won't get pushed out by operating fees. As for staffing, they would need to hire a lot more EMTs and Paramedics.
  3. I hate to hear this. I know a couple guys still at Monty north and Mike M. is a great guy.
  4. Unfreaking believable. This city loves to crap all over first responders every chance they get unless it's an election year.
  5. Wow, this is getting worse. http://www.wetmtv.com/news/local/story/Neighbors-In-Van-Etten-Want-Mayor-To-Step-Down/GF_pyvlfcEezLZBO8RskaQ.cspx
  6. I used to vollie in Chemung County when I was younger before moving to the city. It is a shame what they are doing to this department. A lot of which are old timers with grudges against the current Fire Chief. Van Etten is a very rural department and small town. Most other departments in the county will make exceptions for out of district members by restricting the offices and ranks they may run for, but to flat out say no you can't, especially when membership is at an all time low is scumbag move and clearly shows the game that the trustees are trying to play.
  7. No problem. Getting hired? Easy. Everyone is looking for EMTs. The only thing that has changed is the faces and protocols, same old BS is still around. As for companies to avoid, Citywide, Hunter, First Response. If you are looking to get back into 911, Transcare is your best option. Seniorcare just got 31 eddie and sam out of brooklyn hospital, but with 10 years out of the game, they might not hire you immediately for 911 and put you just in transports.
  8. Q: I was certified many years ago as an EMT in the State of New York but my certification has long since expired. Do I have to enroll in an EMT-Basic original course in order to recertify or am I eligible for an EMT-Basic challenge refresher course? A: You are eligible for an EMT-Basic challenge refresher course. Once certified in New York State as a CFR/EMT/AEMT, you are always eligible for a challenge refresher course at or below the highest level of EMS provider certification you once held. Please note that your certification number that was issued to you when you were first certified as an EMS provider in the State of New York remains your EMS identification/certification number for life. found on the NYS EMS website So you dont have to challenge out as a medic, but you can challenge out as a tech instead, then go through medic school again if you want. I took my refresher at OLM aka Montefiore north, now. Still a great program and Mike Moculsk runs the EMS programs there. You might be able to call the Troy office and give them your social and dob and they should be able to pull your number for you.
  9. AMR still does transport in NYC, though I do see fewer and fewer of them, but they still operate a 911 bus for Kingsbrook. I did hear that they might lose that bus, just not sure if it will be transcare or seniorcare or fdny who will pick it up, if the rumor is true. I highly doubt TransCare would even entertain the idea of being bought out by AMR. They hold too many contracts and simply continue to grow. Not just Westchester/NYC, but Delaware, MD, and PA.
  10. Thats great news, maybe I will go back up to CT this summer, last time I took the train on the New Haven line, my train caught fire at the Mamaroneck station.
  11. Physical agility is just that, physical agility. The only other "test" is a drug test that you will take prior to taking the agility test.
  12. Most likely the slowest companies at night. Not sure what companies those are, but we will see shortly. Low fires, lower number of fire related deaths. 73 were killed in fires in 2009. The city finds that justifiable in closing companies overnight.
  13. I used to work at TC for a while in NYC, out of the TCC base. I enjoyed my time there and am actually looking to go back part time. It really does depend on who you ask though. I have always found that people who complained the most were always the ones who were late, never did what they were suppose to do, banged out all the time, and always got written up. It is what you make it. There is overtime and some decent Supervisors (depending on where you work out of). If you are using this as a stepping stone into something bigger like FDNY or 911, then learn. The best part of transports is patient assessments and being able to handle patients with many different illnesses and diseases at different stages. Most emergency jobs are typically BS, but gives you practice.
  14. That's a nice maze. I like how it can be customized, do you guys have a mayday pit as well?
  15. I actually just called them last Friday to update my information after I passed my state exam. They told me that they are only processing/hiring off the civil service list at this time, but with what prucha25 has said, I believe they are strictly hiring civil service from now on. The next exam should be the first quarter of 2011 and keep your eye out on DCAS come December.
  16. This is insane. Glad to see everyone came from this uninjured.
  17. I know a few recruiters that are telling people that filing will open around January of 2011, but it all depends on DCAS and if the new test is completed. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if filling didn't open till summer.
  18. You should receive an acknowledgment card from DCAS in 90 days from the last day of filing and the list should be generated by then. Good luck!
  19. Rest in Peace brothers.
  20. I was returning from CT today when the train I was riding in caught fire. Here are the pictures I took with my iPhone.
  21. Yes there is an arm strength section of the physical agility, you have to lift up on a bar. You will recieve a letter in tge mail before you go and it will explain the tests.
  22. Yeah its experienxce based, which means you get more points for time in the 911 system, private company, and vollie ambulance. No it wont hurt your chances on getting called, but you will only have 70 points on the test for having your tech card. The people with more time in those that I mentioned will be called first. Many people call the provisional line and get hired with zero experience. With a civil service exam out now, file, but make sure your name is on the list (name, DOB, Drivers license #, tech number and expiration date, and adress). I believe they have to call the people on the civil service list first once the list is made. The Physical agility is easy, 5 mins on a stairmaster with a 40lb vest, cant touch the railings. Then you go to a hand crank, like bike pedals with friction, do that foe 2 mins as fast as you can. Then they test your leg strength by having you stand on a wooden box, you grab a bar attached to a chain holding on to it with a power grip you lift with your legs like 3 times. I believe there is an arm strength section but I took it back in may of 07 and cant remember. Its really easy, I passed and at the time I was a heavy smoker and out of shape. If you pass, you will be handed a packet with an application and information on how to fill it out. You will have to call metrotech a few days later, then you should recieve a call from your investigator to set up an appointment to go over your application packet and to get fingerprinted. Its $95 dollars (money order) for the fringer printing. You will recieve a letter in the mail from your investigator confirming your interview date and what to wear and how to have your hair/facial hair. You neex to bring the letter with you to get into metrotech. Once your investigation is completed then you will move on to psych and medical. If you pass all that, Then you wait for the call to ask if you still want the job and then they tell you what class you will be in next.
  23. Couldn't have said it better. This is a problem that affects a lot of volunteer covered areas. If a run comes in during the day, most volunteers are at their job, leaving coverage minimal. Mutual aid might be there to help, if they aren't on a run themselves. When I was a vollie FF/EMT, I was fortunate enough to have a boss who was a vollie as well. He would allowed us to leave for runs and never scorned us for being late or leaving early. This bill might not solve the problem 100%, but I see this as a good step in the right direction.
