Here is a video of a live burn demonstration of a mock dorm room that the Canton Fire Department put on for St. Lawrence University's Safety Fair Day. Volunteering in a town with 2 Universities, we get a lot of box alarms and students tend to think that when the fire alarm goes off, its not necessarily an emergency and can stay in their buildings. We wanted to show how quick a room and contents fire can occur in a dorm room.
As well as the live burn, we had fogged out a large room and brought students through, showing them what it would be like in our "working" environment. We also taught them how to find a wall and look for a door or window to get out of the smoke filled environment to safety.

GBFD111 liked a post in a topic by Remember585 in Croton Fire Department "Trailer" video
After months of work, one of our members recently put together this video "trailer" to help us attract some newer members, and to show people what we do and who we are.
We are in the midst of a recruitment campaign that will be unveiling soon. It will feature a new website (I hope), a recently created Facebook page (facebook.com/crotonfire) and signs/posters put up around our community.
Please check out the video and let the creator, Meraash, know how nicely done it is.
Thanks.

The picture of the guy in the driver seat holding on to the steering wheel is the best, especially because the tires under him are not on the ground.

My boy, TL-2 summed it up quite nicely. You called 911 and got a civilian employee of the PD. To echo what was said here, if you had said 79th Street Boat Basin, you probably would not have had as big of a problem. In all fairness, most of these calltakers are overworked, underpaid, and aren't given the slightest bit of encouragement to learn outside of what they are taught. Not to mention, they do work in a pretty hostile work environment, where every minor screw up is given either a write up, or results in a loss of vacation time or pay. One other thing, depending on the name of the landmark, they can't put it in their system. Remember the shooting at City Hall a number of years back?? They couldn't put CITY HALL into their CAD. They can't put the bridges in for the most part. They need cross streets. If you had said, Hudson River and 79th Street that would have also helped.
They weren't trained properly in taking fire calls, and still screw stuff up on a pretty consistent basis. When you call 911 in NYC, you get the PD Calltaker who enters the information, sends it to the FDNY CAD/EMS CAD through a link, then conference calls you in to either us, or EMS. We take the info, basically to make sure PD didn't screw it up, and update the incident.
Now, here is the difference between us and them. They have folks who are nothing but professional call takers, who have it beaten into their heads to take calls at face value. They are not allowed to use common sense, and any inkling of common sense is quickly discouraged. Prior to UCT, you have no idea how many calls we disregarded, or told the caller the FDNY was not responding because it wasn't a fire department issue. Not so with UCT, they send us EVERYTHING!!!! I'm not going to give examples. One of the other disadvantages, is when you call 911 is that it isn't borough specific. They take calls for the whole city. I've worked most of my career between the Bronx and Manhattan, and I was born and kinda raised in Queens, and even I don't know all the streets. Although through out my experience, if I hear a street I am not familiar with, I can either ask my colleagues, or ask what borough it's in and have an idea of where it is. The way the building is set up, I spent sometime right in between EMS and PD, and overheard a lot of the operators. I remember one night recently, the calltaker kept repeating Bronx River Road and Nereid. I looked at her supervisor and said, Why don't you put in Webster Avenue and Nereid, or Webster and the City Line. I got ignored for a good two minutes.
We are not allowed to have professional call takers. We train our dispatchers to do everything. This takes up to 10 weeks of training. If one of my guys on a call doesn't know where something is, there is a strong possibility someone on my platform does.
If you need the FDNY or an Ambulance, the proper number to call in the boroughs are:
Manhattan 212-999-2222
Bronx 718-999-3333
Brooklyn 718-999-4444
Queens 718-999-5555
SI 718-999-6666
One of my dispatchers will answer the phone, and we will get you what you need.

I agree with BFD1054, I went skydiving with my friend as a graduation present to myself from high school and it was one of best experiences I have ever had. Freefalling for about a minute, then flying around on a chute for a couple more until we landed.
If you do it, make sure you get the video with it, it was totally worth it.
I feel bad for the wife of the 49 year old though, in another article I read, it stated that she "convinced her husband" to go skydiving that day. To live with that on your shoulders must be horrific.
RIP

The Patterson Fire Department, in Putnam County New York, has taken delivery of their new Chiefs vehicle following conversion by Specialty Warning Systems in Danbury, CT. Designated 22-1-2, the 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe (Police Package) functions as the department chief’s response vehicle and on scene command post.
Similar to many of the vehicles we fit out today, the lighting package is 100% Whelen LED based incorporating a Freedom lightbar with dual LED alleys & takedowns, four LINZ6s behind the front grille, Mirror Beams on each side view mirror and 4 “ round fog light LEDs that contain both red warning and white driving light modules. Red / white M4s were installed on each outer corner, LAW Hideaways in the taillights and an Outer Edge Pillar on each rear side of the cargo door. A solid state headlight flasher and Powercall siren with two 100m watt speakers behind the front grille, complete the warning system. Two additional split color LINZ6s were installed in the upper cargo door to provide supplemental lighting to the rear when the cargo door is in the raised position. Four Strip Lite compartment lights provide work area lighting within the cargo compartment while the two perimeter lights installed on the rear bumper operate with the OEM reverse lights and in conjunction with the cargo lighting to supply on scene ground safety.
The Extendo Bed sliding carrier provides storage for turnout gear, SCBA, handlight, Knox Box, scene command supplies, hand tools, portable extinguishers and T.I. camera. Two of the three department radios and a full complement of portable radio chargers were also installed on the carrier so as to be available when the unit is collapsed into the vehicle or fully extended.
The 24 inch Havis console contains all three department radios, the Powercall siren, Whelen lighting controller, storage box, dual cup holders, armrests and an additional portable radio charger.
Exterior graphics include gold leaf striping and lettering, white reflective side striping and a red & yellow safety chevron on the rear bumper. A Weather Tech hood deflector, side window rain guards and mud flaps were also added to the outside of the vehicle.
In the coming weeks, look for the video on this vehicle on our YouTube channel
Specialty Warning Systems extends it’s thanks to the Patterson FD for their confidence in us to provide their Chief’s new response vehicle, and we look forward to working with them on additional projects in the years to come.

So, I am studying abroad with my school in Rouen France, which is a little more than an hour north of Paris. Last week, I went to one of the 3 fire houses in Rouen and got a tour by one of the Officers there It was interesting seeing all of the similarities and differences between departments in the US and here in Europe. In this particular department, that I got a tour of, its a paid department with at least 30 firefighters working at once, including a Hazmat Team and Rope Rescue Specialists. They are on 24/48 hour shifts with dispatchers in the firehouse.
Some of the pictures are attached.
Their turnouts, which are significantly different. Their slip on their pants over their regular clothes, but do not have firefighting boots like the ones that at least I am used to. Part of their uniform is workboots, which they wear in fires. While I was there, there was an alarm, and putting on their gear did not look very efficient, keeping their boots on and slipping into the pants.
Due to the nature of the call they will take the necessary equipment and leave others behind in other trailers.
One of the trailers that they can attach to the trucks
Our equivalent of a brush truck...the brush guards actually have holes to flow water while driving through the fire.
Some of their apparatus including one of the Aerials which can go 30 meters up
Small Aerial to go through the skinny french roads. Picture is of me and the Officer who showed me around.
On site training facility...The property also has a private gym for firefighters, which include a basketball court, sauna and weights. The property also has a private soccer field. In the main building of the firehouse, there are bunk rooms, which are nicer than my dorm rooms that my university offers, including a cinema area with flat screen tv's, and a dining hall where they have paid chefs prepare food for you.
Wanna see everyones reaction from this. Has anyone traveled internationally and have found similar departments like this?

GBFD111 liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in Starting a new VAC
NYS Health Law Article 30 requires all ambulance services to recieve a CON (certificate of need) from the Department of Heath. To get that you have to prove that there is a need for an ambulance service in an area and that an additional ambulance service would not (financially or membership drain) hurt the existing services. To prove need, you would have to show that calls are either not being covered or are being delayed. Since the area is fully covered by ALS services with average 4 minute response times you will not be able to prove need. An additional service will financially hurt the 2 existing services in (MV, NR, & Pelham). You could also hurt the membership rolls of Eastchester, Scarsdale and Larchmont/Mamaroneck VAC since many of there members come from NR.
Since each of the communities already have established services and are dispatched by the local police (most via a service contract) you will no be able to recieve calls.
Finally, Most VAC's are having major problems with staffing, instead of watering down the pool, why don't you join one of the existing VAC that could use the help.

Well if they don't have the manpower, I reckon you can always put in a call to the State Police.

GBFD111 liked a post in a topic by PEMO3 in Who Should Handle Lift Assists?
If the lift assist is truely a case of a "I fallen and I can't get up" EMS should definitely respond to evaluate the patient for possible injuries from a fall and if a medical condition exists that precipitated the fall along with PD or FD depending on the area of responsibility for possible forced entry. When the lft assist becomes a "regular" then contact should be made with a family member or a DSS referral should be made to the office of aging for the persons safety. If the person has become a fall risk and clearly needs 24 hour care as a health care provider you can not ignore this situation either. While it may not be a true emergency it can escalate into one when the next fall is down a flight of stair or in a full bathtub. These lift assists are looked at as nussance calls but lets face facts they are really cries for help from patients with a voice that sometimes we either don't understand or don't take the time to understand. Remember we can all be that "lift assist" some day.
