So they were volunteer FF's. That answers a question earlier in this thread and eliminates the issue of them not "being qualified".
If they were from DPW or the town or village or any other employer we'd expect them to drop their regular duties and respond as a volunteer FF. But because they were troopers we criticize them.
No place is better at making this hypocrisy more obvious than EMTBravo.
Interesting perspective. I guess you're right. Nobody should lift a finger to help their community and if a volunteer FD can't muster an appropriate response, they should immediately be shut down and replaced with career FF no matter the cost, no matter what.
Very narrow minded position you have!

  3. EMTDelta liked a post in a topic by FIRECHIEF63 in Consolidation in Dutchess County?
All I can say is, watch for what anyone wishes or knows will be the best. The only thing that would be the best in Dutchess County is the Consolidation of ALL FIRE AND EMS into 1 (One) Countywide Fire & EMS Department...
To those who think they know so much about this specific report and it's findings, that are not even released or known by the department it involves yet, you know nothing about it and basically should
"KEEP YOUR BIG PIE HOLES SHUT", give the respect of waiting for the report and it's finding to come out at the March 22, 2012, 7pm press release being made at the Town of Poughkeepsie Town Hall on Overrocker Road.
Thanks for understanding this delicate situation, as it will not only affect the department involved, but it's neighbors and could and should very well lead to what I stated before "COUNTYWIDE FIRE & EMS", since every single department in the county could and would benefit from it then..

Your best bet is to contact SCOTT and ask them what they recommend. It shouldn't be a huge issue as long as the fabric is not brittle...I've used ones like this on packs at a busy training center with constant live burn and all the straps were like that...which for us the fabric was ok...it was the dye that used to make it black that turned colors. Better the strap then your turnout gear...which when that happened the manufacturer had me bring it to one of their sales reps who inspected it did some "tests" which I didn't get to see and they told me it was just the dye turned colors...and gave me the keep an eye on the fabric speech.
Also if its been stored for 5 years...I'm guessing the cylinder(s) need hydro. You need to have that pack serviced as well and flow tested...have them look at the strap and/or replace it while its there anyway.

Ahh, another young inexperienced guy who only thinks inside Westchester County, as if thats the only county there is...Think outside the box before you make blanket statements like that.
I have been involved in pre-plans in every volunteer department I belonged to, even my current one who only has residential and rural areas, we pre-planned our only two sites in our area including a repair garage and an under ground natural gas pipeline pumping facility. As a Captain, I take our crews out on drill nights in the rescue and we drive to a house, and I have them tell me everything about it including construction type, exposure issues, water supplies in the area and other details. This is always a big hit on drill nights and it works.
Not every department is the same, each one is different and has their own strengths and weaknesses.

I think the simple fact is that anyone in emergency services, whether you want to be or not, is a representative of his/her agency. Conduct that is unprofessional and immature not only makes you look foolish, but reflects negatively upon your agency and the emergency service community as a whole. An individual who is a Chief or other supervisory figure in his/her agency should absolutely be held to a higher standard, since they are expected to be the utmost professional and possess the qualities of a mature and professional leader. When I see individuals exhibiting childish and unprofessional behavior, it makes me second guess their abilities as a leader. We dont have to act like professional robots all of the time; we are all human. But unprofessional conduct when it applies to situations involving conflict resolution, or improper conduct that can be viewed by the public or those outside our little world, is inexcusable if you want to be taken seriously as a competent leader.

I think it should go one further, and be ANY firematic officer (or line officer of any similar organization, PD, FD, EMS). There are so many people these days that get squashed by their organization for posting on websites such as this, then there are some where the upper echelon/brass posts something that if it was one of their members, would most likely bring retaliatory action.
Final thought, all members should uphold such a behavior, because, what makes any one single person better than anyone else?

We have a saying at the airport: "Complacency is Security's Worst Nightmare." The same goes on the fire ground, and I can't agree more with this picture. When we have drills at the airport I shout for everyone to "dance" when I hear a PASS starting to go off. Like everyone has been saying, "Training, training, training!"

Its not that they are obsolete, the problem is that the general fire service has become complacent.

  24. EMTDelta liked a post in a topic by JetPhoto in Why Cancel AFA's?
From a volunteer view, If I have "the time" to run out for a AFA that could be a fire I most likely don't have the time to then to sit and train. If I am an employer letting a worker run out for a legitimate call I don't want the person to then say well since I'm out I might as well train. If it's not an emergency then I should be back at work or at home with family I don't have much time to see.
Set a drill up and I'll show up, where I am able to make the time for that event. If I'm the home owner / business I don't want you climbing roofs ect if it's not necessary. Think of the possible damage and the fact that an apparatus sitting out side of the business does not look good to customers.
  25. EMTDelta liked a post in a topic by helicopper in Scranton firefighters refusing OT
It's an interesting situation and I applaud them for taking a stand. Many many many jobs use OT to avoid hiring and this reinforces the fact that they're understaffed. They've laid off members and filled their shifts with OT. Now the refusal of OT points out two things - they need more people and OT can't be relied upon to guarantee coverage.
It's not about their pay or the desire/need for OT. It's about standing together and trying to improve working conditions, an act seldom seen in the EMS community where we happily step over the still warm body of our brethren to take their shift or fill a position. There is little if any solidarity in EMS.
