Have a pulse....... That's a joke, but there may be a bit of truth due to the extremely low pay in this career. The pay is causing the character of employee simply because of this.
My advice for any interview, not just for in the emergency service field is the following :
Wear a suit - Navy or Grey is best, but black will do (black is a tad bit formal)
Wear a white dress shirt and a tie. Neutral color tie is proper, no funky patterns
    Wear dress socks and shoes.
Get a haircut the day before, shave the morning of and groom your fingernails.
Arrive to the interview 15-20 minutes early and leave home with ample time to spare in case of traffic or car trouble.
Shake hands with a medium grip. Firm, but not so you crush knuckles, yet not to the point of a dead fish handshake feeling
Make eye contact with handshakes and while talking to your interviewer.
Maintain good posture while in the interview with your back straight while sitting and your hands forward in front of you. DO NOT cross arms as this is a body language sign that you are hiding something.
Always answer the question being asked to the best of your ability. Nothing more and nothing less. DO NOT volunteer any information you aren't being asked as this make open doors to further questions that you may not be prepared to answer. Ask for clarification if the question being asked is not totally clear to you.
Do not ramble or repeat yourself while answering any questions
Always be honest. If you lie or stretch the truth, it always will be discovered at some point.
Be polite and be respectful. (Yes Sir No Maim)
Thank them for their time and consideration after the interview
    Hope this helps

5' LDH will give you about 1,500 gpm and you are limmited on the distance.
Every community in Westchester has a number of buildings that the ISO needed fire flow is at least 3,500gpm and many need well over 5,000gpm. ISO will even give you a list of the flow at every property that is insured. Great for preplanning.
20 years ago In Europe I watched an FD using a hydraulic pump move 2,000gpm 1 mile after lifting it over 135' up to a bridge. Larry Davis tried to convince depts in the US it was a great system and was a 3rd the price of a single engine. Basicly no one was interested, until a few years ago when FDNY bought 5 of them.

    You are probably correct, Capt.
I was just mentioning an instance that I have heard of second hand. I do not live or voli up there, so this was only what I heard.
    Just making an example.

I volunteer to help my community and do something productive with my time. I LOVE being a fireman.
I also understand and respect not responding to career depts. that are getting shafted with layoffs and hiring freezes I get it.
I never got into the career vs volunteer bs, so please don't interpret this as that.
My question is : Where is the brotherhood in career members complaining in one breath about the lack of manpower, but then complaining again when they hire because their overtime is either cut or now nonexistent with the new hires

Follow-up report from FF1, member on scene:
Engine 37 first due engine, ran two lines.
Possibly an electrical fire originating at the panel, main body of fire was located within the walls and ran up into the attic of the restaurant via openings for pipes and conduits. Quick knockdown, location of fire, spread, and live electrical wires while waiting for Con Ed to cut power made it stubborn to fully extinguish and open up to check for extension.
VMFD released from standby when Larchmont picked up they took over standby.

I would like to say one thing about the article in the news paper. I am a member in the village of Mamaroneck and the kid that says he was a fireman he is know longer a member of the department and when we arived on the scene he was standing out side. He was clean as if he was going out for the night and also told us nobody was in the house. If the members of the department didn't do a search we would have never found her so don't go by what you read in the newspaper because it is false I was one of the first on scene and have to say the Vmfd did a great job to save the women.

Mutual aid is intended for you to help other depts. and other depts. to help you during those times when your district "blows up" and you have multiple calls at once or you have a multi-alarm fire or extraordinary incident that exhausts all of your resources.
Mutual aid is not intended for you and your municipality to ignore staffing levels and choose to not spend money to hire career personal, buy more apparatus, recruit more volunteers, ect and in turn just say "Why should we spend money on this issue when we can just call others every single time we have a fire, rescue or more than 1 call in the district?"
