Rest In Peace to the fallen soldiers and their families, and may god watch over all of our soldiers as they stand on the front lines.
It makes me sick that people like those mentioned would get more attention and praise then our soldiers, or even us as firefighters, when a soldier or firefighter or police officer or EMT/Paramedic fall in the line of duty its always the same thing...Nothing. Yet a famous star who caused so much trouble passes on and they get weeks of coverage, benefit concerts and shows, outpouring from the world and sympathy from world leaders yet a soldier who gets killed defending freedom doesnt even get a tear?? Whats wrong with our society?

A few are EMT's, but not many. They are in communication via a Nextel system with TMC.

Ok I just want to clarify most ICS SOPs including Phoenix's give a number of options for command when the first in unit is a supression unit i.e. Engine 123. The nothing showing mode, fast attack mode, and the stationary command mode. It should be noted that in the first two options even though the officer is in the building he or she is still the IC. No one recomends letting this go on for long but in many cases is the proper procedure. No commonly accepted ICS SOPs call for the pump operator to be the IC that I know of.

To tell you the truth the southbound bridge has always troubled me. The guide rails for a heavily traveled roadway by cars that average speeds in excess of 60 mph appear to low for comfort. I am sure there are safety specs that back up their design especially given the fact that it was recently rehabbed and luckily no one has catapulted over and into the drink below but with the speeds, tight lanes and number of high profile SUVs on the road it sure looks like a "dive team response" waiting to happen.

Matt was known around Putnam as The Food Dude. Every year during the annual Putnam Lake fire department Holiday Parade he would drive his quad up and down the parade route collecting food for the homeless. R.I.P. Food Dude .

Interesting, I like the Idea. But it seems that the YHFD Commissioners have their mind set that they need a 3rd Station.
Today, there was a smoke condition at 1594 Croton Lake Road. It's 3 driving miles from Station 2 and 4.5 driving miles from the proposed station 3. They struggled to get 2 engines to the scene, 1 came from each station. And one of the trucks was driven by a chief. They had to call in a mutual aid engine and tanker from croton. I'm not going to make an opinion until I see real facts but by the looks of it, a third station will not work for them.

wow....having once lived in the South end of Yorktown - when I was a member there I think I was the ONLY member to live South of the resevoir.....and I moved away umm....quite a few years ago!
My father used to live down there, and was a staunch opposer of building a new fire station - for many of the reasons already pointed out here- such as Millwood having a station right down the road - why NOT enter an automatic Mutual Aid agreement with them? Or Croton, or Ossining..... Another thing I find to be asinine is that some areas of the YFD are accessible ONLY by driving into Millwoods' district!.....
And yes, when I lived in the 'South End' it was pretty darned hard for me to make a piece of apparatus at the main station, HOWEVER I don't recall having to wait any real length of time if there was a call down by me - apparatus was able to make it in good time - think about it - if the majority of hte membership lives and works near one of the other stations, WHY would they bypass that station and apparatus to drive down to the South end and grab a piece of apparatus from there? Especially if you don't know if someone else is ahead of you and might have it out the door a few minutes before you get there - now no one is responding apparatus from one of hte other stations because people went to the closest one to the call.....
As for personnel to respond to this new station from the area - unless the population has increased DRAMATICALLY since I left - there aren't a whole lot of people to pull membership from - and having or not having a station down there had NOTHING to do with my joining the department when I did.

  20. fireboyny liked a post in a topic by 16fire5 in Electronic accountability systems
Accountability systems for a volunteer fire system that relies on home response are inherently toughter than ones for career departments with in house staffing. For most systems used by career departments tags, nametags, electronic riding lists are completed before the call comes in. The battalion chief knows his staffing before the fire. If he has an issue with Truck 3 he knows truck 3's staffing. Also career departments just by the way they operate are better set up for crew integrity. With a volunteer system and especially one with members responding in POVs it becomes very difficult to track. Also if your only using tags how do you track where the person is and who they are operating with? I have watched the passport system in use and think it has a few advantages. First the crew is together on the passport. Second you can easily look at the passport and read the names. With a tag system you probably need to handle each tag to account for people. If you just went defensive the tags system can not quickly ensure you have everybody. As stated the EFAS system is far superior to the old radio roll call. My adivce is to use you system on every call and be firm. If you have a crew that went inside on a gas leak and they didn't leave their tags make them come outside imediatly and get their tags. Do that a couple of times and you will gain compliance. Next practice doing a roll call at drills and even the conclusion on minor incidents. If the first time you do a roll call is a MAYDAY or collapse it will not work. Look into the NFA calling the Mayday class add some of the things I just talked about and you have an excellent drill.
