  1. Real nice that they buglarized him a second time! I would love to see the actual Boston Police manning statistics since Menino took over. If it wasn't for Cops on detail you would never see any in Boston. But at least you can still get the BFD in short time. But not as quickly as the pre-bunker gear days.
  2. Was this the fire that was first reported by the pulling of a firebox?
  3. Well that veteran with a 70 who eventually becomes the seniorman will be in charge when he comes to your house. Additional points definitely, absoulute preference, not a good idea.
  4. Just think about all the bases that have disappeared over the years; ME - Dow AFB, Houlton AAF, Presque Isle AFB, Loring AFB, Brunswick NAS, Winter Harbor NS, Columbia AFS and a bunch of other radar stations in Maine. NH had Grenier & Pease AFB. MA had Bos Navy Yard, Otis AFB/ANGB, Devens, Moore AAF, CGAS Salem, S. Weymouth & Squantam NRAS, B52's at Westover, dozens of Coastal Artillery Forts, 13 Nike Missle Bases and an equal number of Radar Stations, AA sites, WW2 Army Airfields, Naval Auxiliary Airfields, etc. Rhode Island had the largest master jet base with Quonset and the Aux field in Charlestown, Destroyers, PT Boats, & Forts all over Narraganset bay. Now - a few token ANG & ARNG bases.
  5. The Military is a rare sight in New England unfortunately. Thanks for the photo's...
  6. It used to be (30 yrs ago) 5 extra points for Vets and 10 extra for Disabled Vets. I wonder if that isn't a better system for getting the most qualified people. Maybe even 10 and 15 extra points since the military background is a great advantage for discipline, experience, and work ethic. But a veteran with a 70 over a civilian or non-deployed reservist with a 100 isn't the best deal for the public.
  7. The Herald would rather the boat stayed in the water until marine growth clogged the jets and stripped all the anti-fowling paint off exposing the aluminum hull. And as far as the other items, I wonder if that is why auto-makers sell or give warranties? Maybe cars and boats don't come from the factory perfect. Every anti-BFD article in the last month has been a non issue. Do a story on how bad the spare apparatus fleet is and we'll call that reporting. But no, that would make city hall look bad!
  8. If he was Chief of the San Juan Fire Department, then he should speak both. If anything he needs to understand Gaelic, after he learns the proper way to say car, water, havard yard, etc. Too bad Wedge has it in for him, he's a good Chief.
  9. Follow that with a purchase of the Massport Fire Boat and someone could have a nice little business going.
  10. Menino will soon jump on this bandwagon....
  11. The Department has turned a corner. It starting to look like the administration, both uniform and civilian are on the same page and the union is looking to move forward. The rank and file and the public should see a difference soon. Most of the battles are over and everyone just wants to see morale improve, among other things.
  12. Dedication ceremony Thursday Sept 29th 1pm at the Residence Inn Hotel dock on the Charlestown side of the North Washington St bridge, rain or shine.
  13. Should be going down the Hudson today and staying in Perth Amboy (Wednesday)
  14. I heard last week they would be in New Haven on the 11th since the NHFD is interested in buying a smiliar boat. So maybe the 10th on the Hudson?? If you called public relations at BFD HQ (617 343-3550) ask for the P.I.O. They might be able to give you an update on progress.
  15. Latest is they're leaving on 9/6 and returning late on the 12th, followed by a month of intensive training.
