It's about professionalism, standards, and supervision, or lack thereof, and this reflects on the organization as a whole that this is acceptable behavior. This is not the first time something like this has occurred (Squuuaaad 15), and not the first time someone has called in and their terminology has been rephrased by the dispatcher to sound more "buffy". What would happen if the dispatcher decided to dispatch decided to pronounce street names his or her own personal way, and units went to the wrong address? When you have a voice that everyone is listening to, you are in the public eye. As a dispatcher myself, this would never fly in my organization, and the Chiefs of our agency would not find it acceptable. It's ok to sneak in humor here and there when appropriate, but the initial dispatch should be consistent and professional agency wide. What happens to a callers confidence if their town is mispronounced? Or the responders in that town that their name is being mocked? Dispatchers have to work extra hard to gain respect, and it takes one bad apple to ruin the whole bunch's reputation.

I guess there will be more to come with the NIOSH report.

The title may be dramatic, but you either want something, or you don't. If he didn't want to increase the risk of getting cancer significantly, he'd be wearing his mask. Of course no one wants cancer, but why would you subject yourself to something so blatantly? It's 2016.

Well, is he doing everything he can to prevent cancer or any other respiratory ailment, especially at this type of job? On the other side, what if he took of few whiffs of CO and whatever else was in that acrid smoke, passed out, and fell off the ladder? Dramatic, yes. Possible? Yes.

Does Pelham Manor have any interior-qualified members left? Maybe they took themselves off the run card?

This morning, at 0001hrs, EMTBravo turned 13 years old! Maybe it's just me that's excited over something so trivial, but to me, it means something
Seems like it was just yesterday when I sat dow at my computer, enjoying the relatively new, long awaited broadband connection, at my apartment in Woburn,MA, on New Year's Eve, when on a whim, I decided to create a website to replace my Westchester Fire & EMS email list. So, the very simple website went live at 0001 on New Years Day, and, like a snowball down a hill, kept growing each and every week that went by. Photos and information poured in to post on the original site. There had never been a site like this in the Hudson Valley and Southwestern CT, and was launched before anyone had really every heard about Facebook or the term "Social Media". You could tell imediately that this was something that people had wanted since learning the word "Internet". Heck, some people only ventured on the internet for EMTBravo, and that's the only use they had for the internet.. Seven months later, the EMTBravo Network forums (the site you're reading this one) was launched to replace the "News" section of the original site and become an interactive and dynamic way to exchange information and ideas . EMTBravo has grown tremendously since then. I'm proud we our are own website, with our own software, on our own server, all completely customized for EMTBravo by me.
It's still our vision, and it's been proven over the years, that firefighters, police officers, EMS workers, 911 Dispatchers, and everyone else with an interest in emergency services can work together, can become friends, can develop ideas, can learn from one another, and can make anything happen. Of course, it was our first mission to "get the word out" which is still true to this day.
One of the things that I am proud of, is that members of the site when it was first launched are still active members to this day! The loyalty and support of this site by the all of our members has been awesome, and has made the site what it is.
Personally, one of the things I'm most grateful for during the entire 13 years of this site was all the great friendships that I have made along the way, that I probaly wouldn't have ever met had it not been for this site.
In the next couple of days, we will announce our strategic plan for 2016, which will bring some exciting new things for our membership.
    Warmest regards,
    Seth Granville
    Founder and Administrator, EMTBravo

C'mon guys! Put your masks on! I don't like "Monday Morning Quarterbacking", but this is pretty blatent. The Chief is also just standing there and watching it. One guy is even using his hood as a "filter". These guys could probably saves thousands of dollars by not buying SCBA equipment they aren't going to use, and just use their filter hoods instead.

My guys NEVER park in front of a structure at a gas call. The image of that truck company crushed in front of the building still haunts me. I've seen departments who still do, and they really need to review this incident.

Pelham and Pelham Manor got called to fill Mount Vernon last night, and they are severely understaffed as well. It's not really these departments faults that they are understaffed, but the fact they are understaffed and leave their districts to cover another understaffed district is mind boggling.

I would rather have the "extra" guy on the floor. All day, everyday. Having a trained firefighter stuck in a room answering a phone and yapping on a radio instead of pulling hose is a waste of resources. Especially considering 60 control is there AND available to do the job FOR you.
Can you really look me in the face and say "I'd rather have firefighter Joe in the radio room and not helping us make the stretch down a smoke filled hallway because he really is more helpful to me on the radio than on the line." If so, you are whacked.
