Today PC gets toned out for a automatic alarm in a commercial establishment. I heard only 1 engine sign on it was 62.  Maybe I am wrong but I only heard one. thought PC had 300 volunteers?  1 engine with maybe 2 or 3 guys. If you have 300 volleys that truck/ engine should be out the door on the drop of a dime.   Oh all 300 were working or at their homes up north.   Hmmmm

It will be announced in the coming months.  I think around June and it will be for county residents only once again from my understanding.   The exam will definitely be in November

Does PC really need 7 pieces of Engine apparatus?  Probably not but that's a whole other story - towns keeping with traditions of we had 5,6,7 engines for decades so we still need them.  Times and technology change.  Probably get away with 4 engines in PC and consolidate manpower.  Same in places like village of Mamaroneck. Both with 4,5 fire houses do we need that in a small town?    But what do I know.

AS one of the airport guys, I'll answer this one for you.  They were at the drill today (E62, L32, R40, and I believe 2393).  Under the previous circumstances Engine 58 would not respond to the airport for alerts (as far as I have noticed).  However, E59 would respond while it was on duty for Rye Brook at night (RB would respond with E14 while they're on duty).  And, quite honestly, there is no effect on the response for the airport with situation at hand here.  Between all of the other agencies involved within our emergency response plan (ERP) we have fair coverage for the majority of our aircraft alerts.  But here's why  the lack of an engine wouldn't hurt the airport:  WE NEED MANPOWER!  Under our ERP we require any piece of apparatus to come out to the airfield with a FULL crew.  That means if 3 engines show up with 2 firefighters each, we want you to abandon two engines to staff one.  In essence, we really don't care how many pieces of fire apparatus show up, we need manpower, tools, and a buttload of ambulances!

As far as this situation with the paid firefighters in PC being "laid off,"  the Local at the airport supports their efforts to regain their jobs (and as the Representative I can assure that we do have our brothers and sisters in our thoughts and prayers, and hope for the best of this situation).

If Rye Brook presently has eight firefighters and they picked up the eight dismissed firefighters from Port Chester and paid their salaries with the million they no longer have to give the PCFD. That would give them . 16 members on the Department, the same number of career firefighters many of the smaller jobs in Westchester have right now give or take a few ===Larchmont, Pelham Harrison, Pelham Manor etc. When appropriate officers could be developed from the group, ie One Captain, three Lieutenants and twelve firefighters on 24. hours a day coverage
A four person or three person shift could take care of the vast majority of smells and bells calls before the need for mutual aid.
The benefit for Rye Brook would be a professional Department for about what they are paying now without having to deal with the contract and any future PCFC drama ,additionally, they would get fully trained veteran firefighters well versed in their Department and community. ( they work there now)
The eight Port Chester firefighters would again be employed and their families protected.
I think it would be worth a conversation. it could really be a win-win-win all around.

Aux officers are not properly trained to be a police officer.  They are a peace officer if I'm right. and in Westchester I believe most Aux while in uniform performing such duties they carry a gun.  For the most part Aux are just a security force at local events, parades, fireworks, sporting event etc...   Usually don't take action and call for regular patrol car if something happens.   In NYC they don't carry guns and usually are at street fair events etc..   They don't have training and or take classes in law which basically will protect you.  And basically don't go through tactics training.   At least a volunteer FF is given some type of training for Interior FF or Haz Mat.  But professional FF and professional cops go through an academy spending months training to do what we do.  We also go through hours of training every year to keep certified and stay sharp on our skills.  And last but not least professional cops and FF can't disappear for years or months and then just come back and go to alarms.

It would seem Rye Brook should look at legal options.  But Vtach is right why not just take that $1mil and hire the 8 on to the small exisiting career staff RB has now.  How many professional FF does RB have?  Unfortunately if they get a fire or something big they will need mutual aid, but hey in todays Westchester County Fire system everyone calls for MA.  I know its not a solution but RB can start to build a career staff  for a small town.  If they get the big one well they have options close by White Plains, Rye, Harrison.

Also Pete K is correct there are PC volleys who definitely don't live or work in PC but volunteer.  I have heard sometimes they struggle to get guys to some alarms and engine can't roll.

This is very tragic.  The PC local needs everyone's support.  What is being done to get these guys some income once May 31st comes?  Any type of fundraiser? 10-13 type.  Sounds like some these guys have families to feed.

Buff guy i stated pretty much the same thing on here about a month or two ago.   You could and should merge most of these sound shore departments.  All the points you brought up are valid and as i stated in the previous post you don't need Mamaroneck or PC with 4 or 5 firehouses.  could save a lot of tax dollars.  I mean between Larchmont to PC, all those towns you have about 25 engines alone. Cost of each of those engines and to run and maintain them and then the equipment....well you get the idea.   And as far as experience in these small towns.  Yes granted you don't see a lot of fire but in 10years (amount of time I at least think a volunteer chief should have) I am sure you will see enough fire.  I mean hell every town calls mutual aide lately like you stated and well you gain some experience going in.   I think a career chief probably the way to go and still keep whatever you have as a volunteer crew.
