  1. Not to get even further off topic but George Zimmerman even after all of this went out of his way to aid a family of four in an MVA last week... Not saying he is a hero but he sure seems like a stand-up guy. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/07/22/george-zimmerman-rescued-man-from-truck-crash-last-week-police-say/

I have heard of police dispatchers having motorists following drunk drivers etc before so its not a rare occurence. I don't think a dispatcher has the legal authority to direct you to do something. The dispatcher even said "Sir you don't have to do that" not Sir Don't do that, yes legally there is a difference in the wording. Kind of like may and shall.

  2. I have been reading the responses here am glad to see the feedback on this important issue. I for one would like to see volunteer departments have the ability to appoint municipal training officers providing they have met the criteria under section 426. I think that this would help some departments with training as well as maintain some level of competency. I have written to FASNY in the past for their input and also their support but it fell on deaf ears with the past leadership. Would like to see some thoughts here from all of you on this idea....thanks.

I agree this is the biggest issue. For example I went to Montour Falls and took Fire Instructor 1. In order to teach OFPC classes you need to take the Instructors series for each class. Kind of like a train the trainer type of thing. In order to take these classes you need to be an MTO or a state instructor who works for OFPC. So for those departments who have guys who have taken Fire Instructor classes the only way for them to actually be able to use those skills is get a job with OFPC.

  3. Ok if it's not stand your ground, then it's profiling. Was self defense by GZ needed? Every American has the right to defend their lives, but provoking a confrontation this was not going to end well. I believe in the right to bear arms, but only buy people that need it, and have a extensive back ground check. GZ had no reason for a gun. He was a buff like some people when act like a fireman or the hero of the day. How many probies in our service have you seen buff it out with all the bells and whistles in their car, or first one to show up for a call. I'm sorry to say but this topic is going to become racist and not about the Dispatcher/Zimmerman situation.I own a gun for work and I'm always thinking about " what if I have to pull it out, and against who, and if I do and fire it how will I feel knowing that what I did was justified in the legal system or by God.

Was self defense by GZ needed? -If my face was being bashed into the ground and I thought I would die then yes.

Every American has the right to defend their lives, but provoking a confrontation this was not going to end well. -So what if he did "provoke" it he was still attacked.

I believe in the right to bear arms, but only buy people that need it, and have a extensive back ground check. - How do you define people that need it? Is being able to defend your life or your families a need?

I'm sorry to say but this topic is going to become racist and not about the Dispatcher/Zimmerman situation. - Why does it have to become racist? Facts can be discussed without the issue of race by some.

I own a gun for work and I'm always thinking about " what if I have to pull it out, and against who, and if I do and fire it how will I feel knowing that what I did was justified in the legal system or by God. - There is a saying that I would rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6... Seemed to work out for Zimmerman

  4. If your paying a million dollars for a 75 ladder you must have put every bell & whistle on it.

In my district we have several buildings while only 2 stories in the front they are almost 4 stories in the rear should we have a ladder (most have sprinklers), maybe. We only run 2 - 3 fires a year, most are held to room & contents and we have 6 towers & 2 ladder within 5 - 7 minutes of our district. We don't have the manpower to also run a ladder company and a engine company. We would most likely be calling for mutual aid if we did have a fire in one of those complexes. So why should we spend $750,000 - $1,000,000 for an Ariel?

Would you want to be hanging out one of those 4 story windows waiting at least 5-7 minutes for a ladder to get on scene to rescue you?

  6. At home, Vinny has always been very active in his community and with his kids. He was a volunteer firefighter with the South Salem Fire Department. He was a baseball coach and Board Member of the Lewisboro Little League Baseball, and along with his fellow board members, was responsible for lighting The Field of Dreams in that town. Vinny was also a Board Member of the Boy Scouts of America, and active in many other programs.

That quote is from his biography on his website... Anyone from South Salem with Information?

  7. Not that it is that shocking but this morning at 2AM the Senate passed changes to the SAFE Act.... Yes 2AM

In overnight surprise, Senate exempts retired cops from SAFE Act

Without warning, the state Senate approved a bill early Friday morning that would exempt retired law enforcement officers from new ammunition restrictions in New York’s new gun control law, the SAFE Act.

The measure sprang onto the chamber floor shortly before 2 a.m., and drew howls from some of the GOP’s Republican members. Roughly half of them — including Sens. Kathy Marchione, R-Halfmoon and Hugh Farley, R-Niskayuna — voted against the legislation, generally citing disgust with the process and a desire that the SAFE Act be repealed in its entirety.

“There’s a difference between working through the night and this crap. This is ridiculous,” Sen. Greg Ball, R-Putnam County, said on the chamber floor. “You’re going to have this conference be ripped apart.”

    The exemption passed 49-14.
