They can happen to anyone, but shouldn't. I threw those speeds in there to try and sneak one by you. You seem to be very reactionary in this post. Just wanted to see if you were reading or just being defensive. Nobody should be driving that fast, especially in a tower ladder. Take it from me, getting in an accident in an engine sucks. I know this personally. Although there were thankfully no injuries, the woman who stopped short in front of me was pregnant and transported to the hospital for observation. Luckily, no one was in the crosswalk where the pathfinder she was driving ended up. Luckily my officer and crew had seat belts on and did not land on the pathfinder. Someone older and wiser told me afterwards, there are two kinds of drivers, ones that have had an accident, and ones that haven't had one YET. I just got mine out of the way early in my career. I drive carefully all the time, stop at all negative intersections no matter time of day, etc. I have actually had officers tell me to speed up. I refuse every time. If you have not done this yet, and I suggest this to every emergency vehicle operator, read every fatal fire apparatus (or ambulance/police cruiser) report you can find. Learn from other peoples death. Speed, inexperience, and bad weather are the three most common causes of fatal accidents. Take your time learning the job of the back step properly before getting in the front. Just because you drive more at 3am than a more experienced driver, only means you don't have to take a leak before you go on that call, or you live closer, or don't have to crack your back three times before taking a few steps toward the door. If you take the time to put on your turnout gear, another (more experienced) driver should arrive. If they don't, there are bigger problems ahead...

I don't mean any disrepsect whatsoever, but if you want to be taken seriously when addressing older members of this forum, as well as convincing them to consider your competency, qualifications, and abilities, stay away from using phrases like "wat", "gunna", "ur", or "u". It shows your age, and unfortunately will keep anyone from taking you seriously.
On a second note, I don't think that anyone will argue that with age comes experience, and with experience comes ability and knowledge. I think every one of us at a young age thought that we were ready for anything; it's only as you get older, a little more experienced, and a little wiser does your attitude change about the "younger crowd", whether it be at work or in your personal life.. I know growing up, I used to cringe every time my parents would say to me, "One day you'll understand", and as depressing as it may be, now that I'm older, I do understand.

Departments shouldn't adopt their standards for driving based on who's available at 3 AM or 3 PM. They should have comprehensive screening processes, training (both formal classroom like EVOC and in-formal on the road training), and evaluations before being allowed to drive for an AFA or mutiple alarm fire.

My interpretation of this cryptic message;
He bought this rig.
He's looking for photos and information about the rig when it belonged to Carmel.
Apparently he wants to restore it to what it looked like when Carmel owned it.
Question for the poster: Show us a photograph of what it looks like now, in your possession.
That should clear up whether this a joke or not.

highwaybuff liked a post in a topic by ny10570 in 138th St Bridge Fire
The engine, was absolutely close enough and right against the rail with a stick right next to it. Those east side piers are very strong and fully capable of the construction traffic they regularly handle. Much of the FDR, and substantial strictures all around Manhattan are built on these piers. They had all the hard suction off the first engine and one guy looked like he was trying to explain to the chauffeur how to position the rig. The BC arrived and then the suction was dropped and they started hand stretching.
In drafting the distance or number of lengths isn't as much of a problem as the vertical height you have to pull the water. 10 feet is within spec for the new engines and two lengths of suction would have made the water. I know I was behind Eng 80 going to the fire, but I don't remember who got to the pier first.
FDNY was well prepared to keep everyone safe. There were life vests a plenty. R3 and the marine unit had guys ready to go in, but if there had been a life at risk they would have had serious problems. They attempted to use the deck guy but the valve to the gun was opened before the pump was spun up, so by the time the stream reached and was aimed at the fire most of the water was lost in the river.
I'm about as big a cheerleader as there is for FDNY and have benefited greatly from the knowledge of many of their members. This was not their strong suit.

That random "Dude" playing with the stabilizing jacks, just so happens to have stayed at a holiday inn last night, so we let him play firefighter.
Maybe we should make our drivers wear SCBA's while driving, since the motto was, Always use proper PPE.... Seriously!
This "Dude" is a highly respected member of our department and always operates with the upmost safety.
If you want to ask legitimate questions thats fine.

As the "OP" (took me a minute to figure out what that meant) I strongly believe that the thread should remain open at this time. The "OP" was only made 4 days ago. I would bet that a lot of members have not yet had an opportunity to read it. Especially in light of the Holiday week. Many of our members will most likely be shocked to learn of some of the aspects of this whole issue and they should be given the opportunity to do so.
I also believe that several members would like to see this thread go away because the truth hurts and they don't want this information out there. Further, I think we will see positive change come out of this thread. Some departments will be proactive and others will be reactive. The reactive departments will make changes only after there is a tragedy and someone dredges up the information from this thread and delivers it to the media and / or elected officials. This will show that the problem was known about in advance and those responsible failed to make changes. At that point, change will be demanded by outsiders and it will come swiftly.
The very fact that several individuals are so outraged by this thread begs for it to remain open. If you believe that this whole thing is a non-issue, just don't read it.
Also, for those who repeatedly state that this is not the forum for this discussion...I think it is the perfect forum. Sure, there are other avenues for obtaining, discussing, and disseminating this information. However, for myself and others who love the fire service yet are quite pressed for time normally, this is great. It's fairly convenient to check in here from time to time to check up on the IA's and other issues posted on here and then chime in as time and energy permit.

1.) See KCRD's post from 11:11 this morning. He says it, using the word inferior. I raised that issue back at him.
2.) See KCRD's post from 11:11 this morning. Again, he uses the word inferior. I substituted the word shoddy in this instance.
3.) Who appointed you, JFlynn, or your respective "boys" the judges and juries with respect to how a department other than your own is doing? Don't you think that's the business of each other departments' Chiefs, Board of Fire Commissioners, Members, and most importantly, residents themselves? Unless you or a loved one lives in a district that you know provides inferior service (again, KCRD's word), why is there the constant gripe about what the volunteers do, their staffing issues, their response times, and all the other bullcrap? I've met paid guys who are worth their salt and I've met volunteers who are worth their salt. Conversely, I've met some paid guys who are pretty useless and I've met some volunteers who are pretty useless. That said, no one can paint the opposing side with a broad brush. And that includes coming on here and demanding to know answers to questions that have been killed ten times over in the past. How would you like it if I listened to 60 one day when you were getting slammed and I came on here to raise questions about YOUR department? I'm pretty sure it would piss you off. And I'm pretty sure it would piss you off if I came on here every third day to talk smack - in general - about your "brothers." We all put the wet stuff on the red stuff, we're all "brothers;" who gives a flying crap what side of the line we're on, and who gives a flying crap about a parade? Don't you think department leadership is responsible enough to maybe perhaps CANCEL their participation in the particular parade if it came to light that their immediate jurisdiction was left short? Nobody ever mentioned that, now did they?

There may be issues, but that's not totally my beef. Ever hear of the phrase, "it's not really what you say, but how you say it?" When a person consistently comes online to hammer the same general topics over and over and over and over again, all with a perceived arrogance within the tone of the questions posed ("give me facts," "I want specifics," "I want to know," "I want, I want, I want, give me, give me, give me," etc. and not "thanks for what you do, but I have a question regarding x issue"), it is going to rankle feathers. Yes, I made a couple of "snide" remarks, mainly because this baby crap-on-the-vollies-because-they're-not-truly-part-of-the-brotherhood stuff that has proliferated on here ad-nauseum needs to stop. Every last post of his is nit-picky on the part of the volunteers and after reading it day in and day out, I finally said something. As a volunteer, I take great pride in what I do and I have an awful lot of respect for the people who volunteer in their community, doing so not for a paycheck, but because they want to help their fellow neighbor. Now, just like how I would probably encounter the crapstorm of a lifetime if I came on here and consistently had something nit-picky to say about career guys - for instance maybe saying something like how career fire fighters sit around all day watching TV, doing nothing except waiting for the next job to come in (which, for the record is NOT my belief) - I think it should work the other way, too. QTIPs generally only go so far until they start invading the brain, at which time they usually become rather irritating.

Our automatic tri-village dispatch is not in place out of "need" to deal with "even a private dwelling fire", but is instead a proactive policy to deal with "What If". The other two departments are dispatched to stand-by in quarters, and apparatus is called in as-needed. Our departments have designated first, second and third alarm assignments from within the area to deal with what MAY occur. It's a pre-plan, in place and it works. For example- My department does not operate a ladder truck therefore we rely on any of the surrounding departments which border us on any side to provide one if needed. The point is, instead of waiting to arrive on scene and then have one dispatched, the other two depts. are already in quarters ready to roll. We operate a dedicated cascade truck which we will respond anywhere called upon as we did at this fire, with qualified interior firefighters two of which in this case, were put to work. Volunteer numbers within many departments are lower than what they once were as many who grew up in their communities cannot afford to live in them anymore so they move out. Others work two jobs and cannot volunteer their time. Planning for this possible shortfall in available manpower with multiple area departments is a working alternative to consolidation.

This fire got a huge head start before anyone was ever aware of it- burning in the walls of an unoccupied home with rapid spread to the attic before any units arrived. Crews from Put. Valley, Yorktown, Peekskill and as I can personally attest, Buchanan, worked with Mohegan in an excellent and coordinated effort and kept the damage from being worse than it was eventually was. Should mutual aid departments be included on the initial dispatch? That is a question Mohegan should consider, at least during the daytime hours. We do it in the tri-village (Buchanan, Montrose and Verplanck)24/7/365 on all structure fire calls (even if it's an oven fire). The district with the fire is toned out immediately followed by the other two to man their stations. Works very well anytime of the day for all situations. Again- this fire was well involved before anyone even noticed and the crews did "make a good stop" considering what they faced. Not making excuses here Chief Flynn- just giving a little first-hand insight to what I experienced on scene.

You're telling us that we should expect the departments involved to maybe "have a lil bit of a hard time getting the engine out" and that we should "try to factor in how many of these people are working, or dedicated to some other issue in their lives" and that we should "give them a breaK"????
This was a private dwelling fire. right? So, if we should be understanding of an initial lack of manpower arriving in a timely manner at this fire, I guess we are going to need to be extremely understanding when there is a public assembly, multiple dwelling, or God forbid, a school fire in this area at 2:30 in the afternoon, and the people potentially trapped inside these aforementioned burning buildings and in need of rescue will need to be particularly understanding people as well I guess...
Why not just take an opportunity such as this to admit that there is a problem and try to fix it? Consolidation, regionalization, perhaps strategic use of career staffing...or, just cross your fingers and hope it all works out, and hope that everyone just "understands"...
