Probably give some to EMTBravo to help fix these long lasting small problems on the site.. Then however much is needed to help the Emergency Services in Staten Island & areas hit hard by the Hurricane.

Only 5 more years till retirement. I would go to work, tell a couple of bosses where to go, take the suspension. Then get transferred to a non-enforcement position due to my anger issues. Retire and collect my pension.

Our Village trustees need to be thanked for approving the gift of our former Engine 87 to Broad Channel. Instead of only looking at how we can get more money, they decided to do the right thing to help fellow New Yorkers. Mutual aid is not merely helping a neighboring department when they have a large fire. It is also looking to help others in any way possible. We deployed Engine 86 and a crew for three days to the Woodmere FD on Long Island three weeks ago. I am proud to have served on that crew. It's like my Scouts say, "...to help other people at all times."

A few years ago the State of Flordia made it law thaat all gas stations install a generator hook up so they can provide gas to the public when the lights go out. Maybe this something that New York should look into.

She arrived today in the Village!
All are welcome to come tomorrow or Saturday during the block party and Haunted Hayride to see her. She will be parked at Beekman and Lawrence both evenings. We wish to show the public their new fire engine.
The photo above was taken on Monday right before she left Wisconsin.
On behalf of Columbia Hose Co. #3 and the truck committee, I wish to publicly thank the Sleepy Hollow Board of Trustees and the residents of the Village for their support in the acquisition of the truck. We hope that they are all as proud of her as I am. I also want to specifically thank Chief John Korzelius and Chief Driver Jack Tornello for all of their efforts.
We hope to have here in service in about a month. If you would like to know anything about her, feel free to contact me.

Ah-ha, the elephant in the room. The question becomes, will FDNY ever ACTUALLY request those departments to respond in for the next major incident? I'd have to imagine if they don't pre-plan with these departments, they don't anticipate using them in an emergency. 12,000 firefighters and add the manpower of the neighboring career departments in Westchester and NJ, would they need those volunteer departments? It would seem that they don't think so.
I don't speak for the FDNY, but it would seem their stance on the issue is this: If you don't meet the standards they set, you don't get to come into the city. Period.
Go back to your NIMS training: Resource typing, credentialing, standardization. These aren't just stupid buzz words some bureaucrat at FEMA came up with. If you're an IC and you're requesting resources, you need to know what is coming. Not just the type of truck and the equipment on it, but the personnel and their qualifications. You need to know that those individuals are properly trained to operate in the functions you're requesting them for. Anything less than that is just not acceptable.
When you write an emergency plan you start with planning assumptions. This sets the baseline for your plan and your expectations. Why would you take in resources that do not fit within the basic minimum planning assumptions? That would be setting yourself up for failure.

Interesting. If the manufacturer recommended the helmets should be considered for replacement starting every 5 years and the city said they were safe by their standards at a 10 year cycle the union and the membership would be up in arms demanding that they replace them every 4 years and 364 days and that the old "unsafe" helmets be destroyed so no one would use them and get hurt.

That all depends, if the Department is from Westchester, Rockland, Putnum, or Dutchess. It is considered bashing. But if the Department is from outside those counties it is considered need to ask that question.

Capt you summed it up better than most of us could. Really great post. Obviously from the heart. Unfotunately to too many people 9/11 has become like a mini-series that has been canceled. More effort is placed on remembering the anniversary of Michael Jackson, John Lenon or other celebrities than the over 3500 human lives lost that day and close to 400 combined FDNY, NYPD, PAPD and EMS personnel who perished not to mention the countless others that continue to pay the ultimate price for their actions of that day. September 11 should be made a National Day of Mourning so what happened in NY, Washington DC and PA will never be forgotten. But time to get off my soap box.

"The sheep generally do not like the sheepdog. He looks a lot like the wolf. He has fangs and the capacity for violence. The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, can not and will not ever harm the sheep. Any sheep dog who intentionally harms the lowliest little lamb will be punished and removed. The world cannot work any other way, at least not in a representative democracy or a republic such as ours.
Still, the sheepdog disturbs the sheep. He is a constant reminder that there are wolves in the land. They would prefer that he didn't tell them where to go, or give them traffic tickets, or stand at the ready in our airports in camouflage fatigues holding an M-16. The sheep would much rather have the sheepdog cash in his fangs, spray paint himself white, and go, "Baa."
Until the wolf shows up. Then the entire flock tries desperately to hide behind one lonely sheepdog."

Its a place of business. The particular business is to protect and serve the people of a town and or city. Do these folks drink at their place of paid employment? I'm betting not, so why is this any different? What amazes me about volunteers, (not all of them) is the fact that they will argue to the death that they are of the same quality and held to the same professional standards as Career firemen yet they go around pulling crap like this. Its pathetic and it truly does separate the REAL firemen from the boys.
Drinking is no place for the firehouse.

The steel, which came from the North Tower, was escorted to Croton Landing from Continental Village FD. It is being used as part of the Croton/Cortlandt 9/11 Memorial currently being constructed.
Continental Village 2131 & E232, Peekskill R134, Verplanck E128, Buchanan E161, Croton EMS 55B1, Croton FD 2081, E118, E119, E120, TL44, T10 & R18 as well as police units from Croton PD, NYSP and WCPD participated in the escort.
Here's one quick photo I took with my iphone of it being placed. For anyone interested, this memorial is going at the far north end of Croton Landing Park.

While most everyone knows him as the 1st man on the moon. Many do not know he flew 78 missions in Korea, was shot down (and ejected), he was a test pilot at Edwards AFB. Flighing a B-29 Stratofortress dropping rocket planes, then flying the Bell X and X-15 (which he flew to 207,500 feet).
He was the command pilot on Gemini 8 and then he was Comander on Apollo 11.
Those of us who are old enough to remember the 1st landing were so proud, I can not think of anything else in my life that has made me so proud to be an American.
In 1991 Armstrong had a short TV career on an A & E show called First Flights. It was about the history of flight. The best show was filmed at the Reinbeck Aerodrome (in northern Dutchess county). They let him fly a number of WW I and earlier planes.
He will be remembered, long after most others have long faded into history.
    RIP

A loss for sure. Makes me realize how old I'm getting as the icons of my youth are all starting to pass on. Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, The Who and a number of other great bands from the late 60's and 70's have all lost founding or integral members in the last few years. Like the Jazz greats of my parents generation, ours is now losing the talent that made the soundtrack of our lives. Damn I'm getting old...and I realize it more and more every time I hear one of those great tunes as a commercial or TV theme song.
RIP Jon and thanks for the music and the memories!!

    And now you're learning
What's knockin' at your back door "

Nicoli's decisions have left his home community with 1 less life-saver. For those of you that don't know, he has been awarded numerous life saving awards as well as a congressional level award from Congresswoman Dr. Nan Hayworth last month. It is unfortunate that internal FD politics have resulted in his decision to no longer be a firefighter.
I don't think my own community as a whole is aware of the separation between the the company and the district functions, as mirrored in one of the comments above. I certainly did not understand this for several years after becoming a FF/EMT.
When we hold fundraising events such as a "boot drive", we get dressed in our PPE and hold out fire boots for motorists to donate money to our cause.... "OUR CAUSE?" Unless they have a personal connection to the FD, I doubt that any significant percentage of the donators understand that this $ is NOT going towards training, equipment or operational readiness. This is straight up false advertising. And I am personally sickened by it. I've told my friends and family that donated money annually to the fire dept through the companies annual fund drive, to stop.
I have witnessed repeatedly over the years, tens of thousands of dollars getting spent by my company on parades, annual dinners, installation dinners, christmas parties, etc... And simultaneously get turned down for much needed equipment and stonewalled on training funds by the fire commission. Although these are two separate entities, there seems to be something very very wrong with this. I did not join the FD to drink beer either. I did not join to go to parades.
Ask yourselves: are you going through more cans of ZEP and tubs of turtle wax than saw blades and saw fuel? Our pride should not come from how shiney and clean our trucks are, but rather how dirty and trashed our gear is from having training with it so much. I believe that if we prioritize the trophies that go in a glass case over what we actually signed up to do, we are more likely to end up in a pine box.
