  1. Oh, how I wish I was going! Went to the 50th Anniversary three years ago and had a blast! Have been looking forward to the return trip ever since. Unfortunately, real life got in the way this time. That obstacle has since been removed, but between lack of funds and not being able to get two days off from work on such short notice, I'm afraid I must sit it out anyway. Have a great time, and will look forward to seeing the pics.

  2. Only rig owned by the club itself [all members]

Actually, I think we own two rigs now. Have been hearing rumblings about an old Maxim....possibly the one that's on the flyer that is going around.

I am still a member, but have not made a meeting in just over a year, due to working nights. :( I will be there for a while, but am leaving early to put in an appearance at a family function prior to departing for West Paterson's wetdown.

  3. I think at least part of the problems facing Code 3 are the various changes in the corporate structure, and the different factories they've been using as a result. Yes, back in the early 2000s, the quality and detail were second to none......a far cry from today, which, as was mentioned, is "hit or miss" anymore.

I will be buying this piece at some point, but like Seth mentioned, at that price and with that many of them, I doubt it's gonna disappear right away.

  4. I am hoping to be there, but it's not the guarantee that it was when they had the Sunday date. Two other events that day (muster in Franklin, NJ and the NJ Metro Fire Photographers' Photo Night). Time-wise, there is a chance to squeeze this in as well. We shall see how things go.

  5. There's a number of products out there that will produce the wet/shiny look. Whether one is better than the other(s) is a matter of trial and error.....and opinion.

I usually start by scrubbing a wet tire with Westley's Bleche-White (sp?). It's meant for whitewalls and white lettering, but cleans the rest of the tire as well. Then, once dry, apply the product of choice. Good thing about the more current products is that it doesn't make the tire look all yellow and grungy after a few weeks, like the aerosol foam stuff used to.

  6. When the construction process started, the rig had painted steel wheels on it. They switched them somewhere along the way. What is the price difference between the two? So few FDNY companies whose rigs have Alcoas now keep them clean and shiny, which is understandable given how busy they are. On that note, I can't imagine why they'd go out of their way to spec them unless it was issues with weight or something.

  7. The first of the five new Ferrara rescues being constructed for FDNY is finished and will be assigned to Rescue 5. Here are a few photos of it on display at the Long Island Fire, Rescue & EMS Mega Show, which is going on this weekend at Nassau Coliseum. My apologies for the "cluttered" and blurry shots. Was very difficult to get a good shot with all the people around, and a "point and shoot" job doesn't always get along with sub-par lighting situations. But, until the rig is delivered and the "experts" get access to it, these will have to do.

  8. Yes, one paid FF per apparatus, aside from the tiller's 2. Don't know how true this is, but there has been talk of eliminating the career guys from all but Central, and having vollies who are qualified to do so drive the other apparatus. Been a lot of driver training going on lately, and I don't think they've hired anyone new (don't hold me to that). Will be interesting to see how things work out.

As for "needing" a tiller......there's a reason why they kept the old Engine 6 as a spare, and not E-4. Shorter wheelbase. You do the math.

  9. Middletown is a combination department. Only the drivers are paid/career. They've been looking to replace Truck 1 for over a year. While the story of what they're going to get changes every time I hear it, the decision to stay with a tiller had been pretty solid up until now. Thought the whole thing was on hold when Truck 3 got wrecked. Will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

The current mayor's view on MFD seems to change based on how the wind blows, which doesn't help matters much. But, that's another story for another thread.
