Forget race, political party, etc. She was clearly at fault and should be prosecuted. What would happen if any one of us hit a cop???? Andy

I am not sure if you will find any applicable standard for mask confidence as that type of training covers a broad range of topics such as mask profieiency, escape skills, self confidence in confined areas, knowing how to see with your hands and search and rescueamong other things. You might see SCBA and search and rescue addressed in NFPA as profieicney is those topics are addressed in NFPA. Under OSHA's respratory standard you will find most mask related topics. Hope this helps. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

I am not surprised at all. People tend to be in tuned to thier own lives. Me, I would not hesitate to help. I am a parent and would hope if it was my son someone would jump in. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

Yet another brave soul occupying the great fire station in the sky. May he rest in peace. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

There is a special tax listed on the my tax bill ( Mt. Pleasant resident) which is actually an extension of the fire tax I pay. I believe I pay 30.00 per year for ALS service. Not a bad price especially being we have very good medics in our town. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

Good question. First, you spec a rig for what it is needed for. No more fancy bells and whisltles and 10 man cabs with diamond plating and expensive light packages. No more chrome mags or facny paint jobs. Keep the rig simple and only what it is needed for. Next you need to begin a capmaign to the voters. Tell them that the insurance companies do not like rigs over 20 years old. And now NFPA wants apparatus replaced after 15 years. Tkae your argument to the voters long before it goes to a vote. Keep the public informed. Maybe a public relations committee or person isn't such a bad idea. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

The answer is pretty simple...if you are spendind taxpayers money you should be accountable to the taxpayer. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

An infant son of one of our Lieutanants has to have heart surgery in May due to a hole in his heart. The Hawthorne Fire Department will be holding a blood drive on Saturday, May 20. from 10-4 as blood will be critical for his son. Any blood type is accepted. You can contact me at 774-0418 if you have any questions. Please spread the word. Thank you. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

When I took it 20 years ago it was 75 questions and they gave you ample time. Not sure what it is now but contact county human resources and ask them. You can also download sample questions off thier website. Good luck!!! Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

You raies an excellent point. I will just say we (volunteers) should welcome more stringent background checks. Remember, most of us volunteer in our own communities so would you want someone less desireable coming into your home when you are not there or handling your son/daughter in an ambulance. The arson conviction record check is good but I feel an all out background check is warranted. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

I would like to suggest those who have questions to either call DES or have your chief's attend the monthly DES meetings they hold where the top brass are there and answer questions that those may have. I have to say looking at the Gators brings the kid out in me Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

I can not seem to get on your site. I end up with Justice for Murder Victims. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

Monty, first let me say I am a chief and an emt. I do not however feel being a an emt is a necessary criteria for being a chief. On the fireground I am in charge of the incident and am ultimaley responsible for whatever happens. On an ems call, the crew chief in which in some cases is a medic, is in charge of patient care so my rank really has no bearing unless of course there is a safety issue. My dept does ems and we have dedicated line officers who must be emt's who handle the administrative stuff for ems. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

I have been to numerous wetdowns over the years. I have seen things from a downright drowning of the rig to the champagne bottle to even a priest applying holy water on the rig. I believe it is down to personal preference and safety. I have seen fights after someone getting hit with the water also. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

I have a better one...what if it was your mother, wife, girlfriend that died as the result of this stupid act. Would you feel so lenient towards him? He got a break. He is doing 1/10 of the time he could have and he will be home soon. His partner will never come home.

The machine tells you to stand clear for a reason. You get shocked. This was not a prank rather a stupid act by someone who ruined many lives including his. He recieved a 5 year sentence with four of them suspended which means if he keeps his nose clean in jail he will be home in a year. His partner who he "pranked" will never come home to her kids. A defib is meant to save lives...not take them. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

For me to say it is a toss up between the Fire and Yankee bike. Overall they make very awesome bikes. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

A-Rod was over rated anyway. Yanks will make it to the playoffs but not any farther. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD On another note...how about TO's 25 million deal over 3 years with Dallas????

JB, yes there are many classes and I am glad to see you are required to have FBAA and PFI. As stated earlier by someone else, the job of determining a cause is up to the chief under state law allthough most of us use ( i know I do) the county C/O team to assist with that task. Like conducting training, cause determinitation is an important function and FBAA also discusses fire behavior. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

In another forum there is a very good discussion on driving how some departments require being a driver before you can be an officer. There are some good opinions both for and against. I have a question to ponder. Now that NY has a standard for firefighters...FF1 and FF2, what about a standard set for officers and if so what would you recommend as the training criteria? I feel courses in leadsrship and managment, fire behavior, building construction, incident command to start. andone of the most overlooked training course is training officer ( now called instructiona techniques for the company officer). And I mention this because when I first became a LT I had no formal training on how to teach. Usually company officers are responsible for conducting training yet have no training themsemves on how to do it. ihave to say taking that class helped me alot especially with material preperation. Something to think about. Other thoughts on this??? Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD
