  1. I am researching the purchase of new EMS gear. Do any departments use the Globe Lifeline set and if so what are your thoughts/opinions on the gear? Thanks in advance. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD
  2. I am a survival instructor and I favor keeping the rope in my pocket with a biner as opposed to a rope bag. I keep it in my left thigh pocket and find it easily accesible. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD
  3. May he rest in eternal peace and may God look after his family. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD
  4. It was around the end of March of 1980 on a Saturday nightI had just got accepted into the junior corp of the Pleasantville FD earlier that week. We were sent to a fire in the old train station on Tompkins Avenue ( some of you veteran members of PFD may remember this fire). I remember the sky was lit up lit a fireworks display. The building was fully involved. I rmember assisting the older members on wrapping the hydrant and dragging the hose towards the building but I was only allowed to go so far. Amazing how time has passed by...... Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD
  5. In reading the article about the Mt. Vernon truck that was driven away by a civilian during a fire I am wondering what departments have policies that make the driver stay with the rig he/she has driven regardless of wether the rig is committed to the operations of the incident or not. My department does. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD
  6. All jokes aside and some of them were funny...the man had the guts to admit he and he only was responsible for what happened unlike others who would waffle. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD
  7. But there is plenty of room in jail and that's where these guys belong if they in fact turned off scott bottles and ripped off gear inside of a house fire. They are not firefighters but criminals. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD
  8. We try to discuss the incident right after we get back into the station while everything is still fresh in our minds. Problem is at times many of the members are in a rush to get back to work, home, etc so it ends up being discussed at the next meeting or drill. Andy Mancusi CHief Hawthorne FD
  9. I am pleased to see all the responses to this issue. I too believe this chief is off the wall and has a dangerous outlook on training. I preach to my members that thier safety is #1 and that goes for training and responding to incidents. Like any chief, I am ultimately reslonsible for setting the tone on how things are done and if something happens like someone getting injured it ultimately lies with me. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD
  10. Does having either a towerladder or straight stick impact the ISO ratings? Any takers on this???? Thank you. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

  12. I am wondering what departments are doing for new member training before they go and take FF1. I need some ideas. Thank you in advance. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD

  17. This is what is taught in FLIPS.....Educational Methodology, Fire Behavior and Arson Awareness, Fire Cause and Origin Determination, Haz Mat First Responder Operations, Fire Instructor Level 1, and Fire Officer Level 1. These certifications are issued by the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control. Additionally, non-New York City officers receive certification in the Fire Reporting System by New York State. Graduates of the program also receive certifications in Building Construction from the National Fire Academy, and FEMA. ( This is straight from the FDNY Academy web site). Now these classes are available to volunteers as well. I have taken all of them ( excpet building construction) and achieved my Level 1 and 2 Officer for NY...not that it makes me any better than anyone else but my point is here is a standard that could be followed by taking these classes over a period of time. I bet alot of you have taken these classes and may not know you are elegible for certification. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD
  18. Emergency, like most shows in those days were worth watching. Most of what you see on TV today is junk in my opinion. Give me a Honeymooner or All in the family Re-run anyday Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD
  19. Xfirefighter....No i did not think you meant anything of the sort and apoligize if it was presented that way... Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD
  20. Such as sad situation. May he rest in peace and may God watch over his family. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD
  21. None of us want to be burned wether it is in training or the real thing. And while we like to make training as realisitc as possible we also have to take safeguards to prevent injury. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD
  22. "......If a fireman is on the department and doesn't get burned, he isn't doing his job," Chief Gorrell said. "If they don't get burned, I don't want them our department. If they are afraid to get burned, they're on the wrong job......" This was a quote from a chief in FirefightersCloseCalls.com. What are your thoughts??? Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD
  23. Jim, the next Mt. Pleasant Chief's meeting is 2/20 at Briarcliff FD but I will not be there due to a devensive driving class I have to attend. Andy
  24. First let me say I do enjoy this site and sharing ideas and views. It is one of the most informative sites I have been on. I also feel however people tend to get passionate about thier views and it sometimes turns into discussion that some may find offensive. I personally don't find anything offensive nor do I take any comments personal ( 20 years working in a prison and 26 years in the volunteer fire service has made me thick skinned I guess ) but others will especially when comments are made towards something they are a part of or believe in. Short of deragatory, abusive, and threatening language I feel views should be expressed freely. There is an issue now as we all know out of Denmark and a cartoon which will test this country's committment to preserving free speech, something many of American has died or been injured for. With the understanding that this is a private site with terms and conditions which I do respect maybe we can come up with a happy medium. As always, my humble opinion. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD
  25. The horns are to summon the Grasslands Fire Brigade which protects the reservation from 8-3:30 Mon-Fri. Each bulding and section within the building have specific box numbers. There is a seperate siren for a jail-break. Andy Mancusi Chief Hawthorne FD
