Screw the family of DJ Henry. I for one am sick of their sh*t. He tried to run down a police officer and died in the process. Boohoo but I dont lose any sleep on it. I congratulate PO Hess for this award and commiserate the split second decision he made, while that decision needed another individual life, the decision was made to protect the officers life and public safety in general.

Im jewish but I think I would be saying a few Hail Mary's, some Allah Akbar's, maybe a mourners kaddish and namaste, definitely some namu-amida-butsu and Om mani padme hum, really anything to hedge my bets of getting off the plane alive.
(FYI I was flying into Burlington Airport in a Bombardier Q400 about 3 days after the plane crash in Buffalo in 2009 involving a similar type plane when we hit extremely heavy turbulence about 1.5 minutes from landing, to say I was sh*tting a brick is an understatement.)

It also not the only state that does it. While in VT it is potentially done for the money, it is also to ensure the ambulance is in compliance with state health and transportation codes as well as any federal DOT or DOH requirements. In VT we do it here too, also anyone running lights in their POV must be authorized by the department chief, EMS district chief and the State minimum.

Hats off to the the members who stepped up and researched the issue, Another Hats off to NYS civil service who stepped in and ADVISED MOUNT VERNON TO AMEND ITS TEST ANNOUNCEMENT to delete the residence requirement. This whole issue is obvious where it all started from!!! More to follow.

There were a few cases in Ca over the past 24 months or so of this happening. My chief actually sent around an email today identifying the event in Irvington and giving instructions on what to do if we encounter an event like this.

    1. You incorrectly asked about a supply engine when you were really asking about a 2nd due.
    2. I don't think anyone but a dealer would be willing to recommend anything to you without knowing more about your district.
    3. You were very vague and unspecific about what you wanted from the truck. If you can fit the requirements of an engine into less than 10 lines of text you should be working for a design firm or something.
    4. If you want opinions on manufactures look in the dozens of past threads on here in the past years, literally all of your answers have been answered there several times.
    5. You asked for this help and assistance was forthcoming, I do not appreciate your tone and I am sure mfc does not either.

A supply engine can be, but does not have to be a normal class-A pumper. There are at least a few departments in Westchester that operate a non-front line pumper (meaning it does not have enough equipment to be first or second due to structure fire). These apparatus are essentially giant pump on wheels with a full bed of LDH. I know of at least one that carries about a mile of 5inch. Essentially this apparatus job is to go the the fire scene, then reverse lay to water source or it can exclusively fill tankers from the fill site or supply the attack engine. They are not designed to be actively engaged in firefighting, but rather simply moving water. This can be like you said, just the 2nd due, for those without a tanker or with long distances to water sources this is another option.
I have attached a copy of PRFDs and BFDs source pumper from LFD171s site and a photo of BFDs hose bed and mile of LDH.

I started the original thread about that organization, in fact it was picked up of EMT bravo, and reposted on an FDNY site, it appears some of those members were maybe going to forward the organization to the Fire Marshalls for investigation. The discussion has alot of merit as people with wind breakers getting beyond firelines and possibly wanting to do harm to responders. Please reopen the thread.

Blue LEDs are a SAFETY ISSUE not a police issue thank you very much. It became legal for police as a safety issue and is legal on fire apparatus for that same issue as well. Clearly you are letting your opinion get in the way of the facts.

Your post doesn't make me apprehensive at all.
As of this moment, there is no proof or evidence at all that a "meltdown" has occurred in Japan. There are certainly quake-damaged fuel assemblies, and some RCS has boiled off and carried aloft some miniscule traces of fission products. There was a huge amount of radiation released locally when the fuel was uncovered, but that has since diminished. The main focus right now is getting the cooling restored and stablizing the coolant levels. This will eliminate the hydrogen threat, which is what did most of the damage, and provide shielding so that further repairs can take place.
This accident is much more severe than Three Mile Island, but is not even close to Chernobyl.
This is still a developing event, and I am not surprised that the media is doing its level best to whip up an Armageddon scenario. So far, it doesn't look like the American public is taking the bait. If you want real "news" about what's going on with this, go to the ANS, IAEA, or NEI websites. By far the biggest life threats to the Japanese people are hunger, lack of potable water, lack of sanitation, disease, and exposure to the elements, not radiation. Let's not lose focus because of screaming headlines from "news" agencies.

I really think any radiation that makes it's way to the united states will likely be negligible and far too dilute. The accident at chernobyl was far, far worse than this (at this juncture at least) and actually propelled nuclear fuel and fission products far into the atmosphere....what made it's way here, while detectable, never really amounted to much. As long as the reactor vessels hold up (apparently there may be some leakage or a breach at #2) the melted corium will remain intact and confined to it's respective vessel and pose little risk to the general public. The spent fuel pools are a different story and are a bit more concerning...but again we just don't know all that much.
I think everyone is concerned and its good to stay on top of things. But, let's not stir up fears prematurely. There is no reason to go out and get potassium iodine pills and cover ourselves in lead. It's a delicate situation, but not out of the realm of being dealt with. Aside from that, the information available to the public is limited. Flying gives you 5x you're normal daily dose of radiation....radiographs & CT scans give you far more (~months dose or so)...should we stop flying and should MDs stop ordering these tests?

In a word, yes but there is a much larger risk of an Earthquake under New York City than a tsunami ever hitting the East Coast. Without going to deep into the geophysics and geology of the issue, the tectonic plate that comprises the entire East Coast and all the US upto California is moving away from its boardering plates. This creates a rift valley (the mid-atlantic trench). The rift valley is fairly stable because that is where the new oceanic crust is formed from the magma bellow. Where this earthquake, creating the tsunami occurred is at a subduction zone, where one plate flows under another. These are significantly less stable, especially in Japan where a heavier oceanic crust is flowing under a lighter continental crust. The rift valley that is forming in the atlantic is where two oceanic crusts with similar densities are splitting apart. Basically, there are significantly different geologic processes occurring in the Atlantic vs. the Pacific. This crustal movement is why we find different types of fossils on different continents, essentially where the land masses are currently is not where they were 100 million years ago, which is not where they were 500 million years ago, which is not where they were 1 billion years ago, which is not where they where 4 billion years ago. While you can not say that it will never happen, the planetary forces that are at work, and have been at work since the dawn of time make it very, very unlikely, but not impossible.
If anyone wants my sources or links or any further info PM me because I really do not want to get too in-depth with the science here because it really is very technical and unless you really do know what is being discussed, it will not make any sense to you and actually confuse you more. The only reason I commented is because this is one aspect of a larger topic my advisor and professors have been studying for 30 years.

One thing I would like to add is part of our foreign aid budget is used to try to win the "hearts and minds" of those people who would originally see us as a threat/challenge. American government investments in infrastructure, education, health care and the environment in foreign countries has been used to portray America in a good light as opposed to a bad light. That way maybe we can avoid radicalism/extremism from abroad directed at the US. Indoneisa is a good example of foreign aid being used to moderate the temperament of a potentially radical country in favor of US interests and security.

    1. Not many.
2.What the average person does not know about foreign is staggering. The US is a warrior culture. We don't do anything that is not of immediate benefit to us. There are 3 reasons why any country gets aid from us. 1. the country has geographical significance. 2. the country is sitting on vast natural resources we do not have and that we need, or need to control. 3. We want them to buy our stuff.
Genocide in Rwanda..... barely makes the news because all they have is dirt and they weren't going to buy our stuff anyway. Iraq invades Kuwait..... now that's a humanitarian tragedy. We send foreign aid so that developing countries will develop in such a way as to buy the things we make. Foreign aid dollars come back many fold in the form of goods and services bought with the money we send.
It isn't bleeding hearts who want a TV in every hut in Pongo Pongo...it's US manufacturers.
  24. SRS131EMTFF liked a post in a topic by ckroll in America is not broke
1 percent of the federal budget goes to foreign aid, compared with 20% for social security and 20% for defense. Large parts of that go to 'developing nations' like Iraq, Afghanistan and Israel. Compared to other world powers, only Japan spends less as a percent of GDP.
Right now, our commitment to 'developing nations' is nothing short of embarrassing and in fact, a majority of AMERICANS
think foreign aid should be 'cut back' to 10% of our budget, which is about 10 times as much as we currently spend.
Out of pocket it's something like $50 per household. Am I willing to give up one dinner out a year so some third worlders can have clean water and a school for their kids? I wish I were giving up one dinner a month.
