Ok , I'll bite since this is not a condolence thread. This was a link to a despicable article by the Journal news released at a time when friends and coworkers still had not either heard the news or the unfortunate details. To read them in the second sentence of the article was numbing to say the least, AND WAS NOT NECESSARY ! When was the last time you saw the details of a suicide of someone other than a hollywood celebrity. And far as me knowing what goes on in "westchester" , it probably isn't much. As far as Yonkers though, born and raised and have worked on the Yfd for the last 23 years. I might know a little something .

We should not have to "dumb down" a Job to reach quotas, period! Municipalities should be looking for "Quality" not 'Quantity"! The Job is inherently dangerous enough why make it more so by hiring incompetent individuals who for the most part don't give a dam about the profession and are just there for a paycheck anyway let's face it! We're all suffering in the long run, especially the taxpayers these mopes took an oath to protect! The Fire Service has always been a Semi- Military Organization yet some Depts. lower their Standards less then what's required to join the Military and then want the place to be run as such. Yeah, OK!!! Keep frigging dreaming! These Depts. made their beds now let them sleep in them!!!!

You are talking about society in general when you say that, but firefighters were always a different type of people than the rest of the population. We don't want ordinary people on our job. AS CAPT2102 said, you hand him the right raw materials and he will build a firefighter. We need the right combination of balls and brains to come to us in the hiring process and we'll take it from there. You know, we need the ones who run into burning buildings when ordinary people are running out. The tests ordered by the courts don't take this into account when judges make their rulings. I agree that everybody should get an equal chance to try to get on this job. But that's it! We should not have to hire equally. I'm not talking race, religion, or color here. I am talking about hiring persons that have the raw materials we need to make that person one of us.
One thing that bugs be is the training saying "Is the scene safe?" If the answer is "no" then stage around the block or don't enter the building, or wait for 53 more persons show up.etc.
"Is the scene safe?" No, it's not safe, a$$hole, that's why they called us. If the scene were safe, any idiot could handle it. Our job is to look at that scene, perform a risk vs. benefit analysis within 30 seconds, start an incident action plan within the next 30 seconds, and put that plan into action.
I don't think that the guy should be on this job if: He can't spell (little words, not hard ones like Polychlorinated Biphentls), and can only answer questions like "there are three men assigned to an engine company. One gets arrested, How many are left?"
By the way,Anybody know how many judges or ACLU lawyers passed proby school?

That's because we have a generation brought up to believe "everything is about ME". And this attitude is reinforced constantly in music, movies and TV ..perfect example, shows like Survivor, Big Brother ect who's core message is screw everyone else...lie, cheat, steal, backstab and otherwise do whatever you have to do to get "mines". Hard to have Brotherhood when "normal" thinking means thinking only of yourself and how you're going to get what you "deserve".

No such thing as "Brotherhood" anymore Chief or at least it's not as prevalent as it was. Guys do nothing but stab each other in the back and turn a blind eye nowadays!

Sadly true. It breaks one of the greatest traditions of the Fire Service: Brotherhood

If anyone knows the family and how one could purchase one of his works let me know. Far too many men and women have suffered from that day. I am hoping that the family understands that his intention was not to harm them, but to end his own suffering. Many say that the act of suicide is not the answer, but the internal suffering that these individuals harbor is of such magnitude that none of us would be able to understand it. Attending the funeral of many of my FDNY brother's from 9/11 causes has given me a very unique perspective on that day and its continued impact over 12 years later.
Prayers for my Brothers and Sisters to the north in Yonkers and for his family.
All Gave Some, Some Gave All!

I noticed in the flier that you have to be in "excellent" physical condition but only of "good" moral character. I guess the city doesn't worry that Firefighters go into people's houses when they are not home.
And, Cap, you must be old school if you noticed all the typos. Back in your day (and mine) the job descriptions always said "Performs light clerical duties." That piece of the job description is gone, so candy dates don't have to spel gud no more.
I better stop writing now or I'll get in trouble

I guess I have a couple of things to say:
    1. There are so many typo's in this exam notice I lost count.
    2. You DO NOT need a High School diploma OR a G.E.D. ( I guess you don't need one to write the exam either )
    3. You can be a convicted criminal and/or a drug addict.
    4. You need to lift a 14' roof ladder. ( Who's going to grab the 24' or the 28' for that matter ?)
I'm old school, I admit that. But it's hard to read the exam requirements and not shake my head. I'm starting my 24th year as a Captain. I have been asked many times "what makes a good firefighter?". The answer is: give me a person who played High School sports; who has common sense; and who has a working knowledge of the trades and I'll make you a good firefighter. And that's all I have to say about that.

Was it necessary for Lohud to expose publicly the details of his death?
    May he rest in peace.

Would anyone believe me is I said there are literal cry babies in the fire service and I don't mean complainers

Pretty valid point. I just took an interesting class this fall where they showed some of the reasons for these types of 'feelings" shifts as well as the sense of entitlement. People went from loyal long time employees, to wanting equality in the workplace, then no ones' a loser, everyone gets a trophy and now those kids that got the trophy even though they just participated are no joining the workforce. They expect equal pay for doing nothing while another person busts their hump. I might be able to find the demographics chart that actually shows the progression so that even us public servants can understand it.

I know this is a topic that has been beaten to death, and not many emergency personal will comment on a topic that we all deal with. It does bring up good points. I feel the moral in Fire Departments suck. I can see the numbers of responders getting lower and lower for calls. There used to be a time that when the pager wqent off regardless what time or what call, we all went because not only for the duty we love but to get out and hang around after the call and shoot the s***. Now ( and I know we all have families, etc. etc. ) it's like everyone is afraid to even talk in the rig going or coming from a call. I love to make jokes, and sometimes crude jokes or like poking fun with other brothers and sisters. But my GOD it's like you have to wear a muzzle now. It's to the point that probies complain about being bullied because they have to roll hose. Why to I want to subject my self to this baby bullshit, if you can't take it, get out!

Sorry, I wanted to be clear that when I stated 4 was better than 3, that if that 4th man had to come from shutting down houses, I'd question it. Wasn't trying to imply that was your sentiment, quite the opposite in fact, I had the idea from your original post or second post that you thought to get a fourth man you'd end up losing other companies.
Again, my comments were in response to your few lines about seeing 3 man companies do as well as four. My issue is that we continually see Fire Chiefs and Commissioners sanction drastic manpower reductions while stating public safety will not be affected. In my mind anything that furthers these lies are a true injustice to the rest of the fire service. While many FD's routinely do outstanding work with crap staffing, we need to continually beat the drum for more staff to ensure the safety of our members and the public we serve.

To each is own. If it works great for you then keep with it. As far as the hydrant not being used across the street your absolutely right. No excuse for that that's a no brainer. Gotta be able to adapt to the situation at hand and yes your right if your hose beds are set up correctly you can do both. Wow, I can't believe we actually agreed on something Capt.. Lets leave it at that.

I'm so happy someone other than myself feels the same way. I 100% agree with you FFEMT150, but in the world of lawsuits, slander, and bullies it seems almost impossible to say, write, or type your feelings, opinions and facts. I wish I can thread about some articles or comment about certain things, but I did that done that and got heat about it. I never wanted to use a false I.D, but in todays baby sucking nipple world, who wants to her crap about what I said. We all have stories about the FD service or EMS service. It's hard for some to (Q.T.I.P), especially Chiefs or Captains of certain departments. Things are not what they used to be. There was also a time you can have a beer together and shoot the s*** during social events and the next you know your being suspended or fired. There is no thick skin anymore. Most go running home to mommy with tears in there eye, a business card of a lawyer name in one and false statements in the other. Thick skin got feeled off a long time ago most take it personally and there the ones that I see on this site.
