Nothing against the hard work of the moderators (particularly in this case FDNY 10-75) But this section is hurting the quality of EMTBravo.
I enjoy seeing what depts are getting. but this is just filler. This morning 80% of the recent board is about rigs being delivered or that might be put out to bid. With half the info either unknown or TBD.
Meanwhile it replaced, a LODD thread, Chains, Grants and other great threads.
If posters have real info on a new rig great, lets see. But this is just filler and is taking away from what makes EMTbravo great.
    Rant over.

As of Friday 1/30, the City of Yonkers has decided to accept the Safer Grant. The rest of the laid off members are being reinstated and demoted officers will receive their respective ranks back. Looks like this will happen by the end of next week. Thank you to all who made this happen, especially the local 628 executive board. Nice job guys!

Although this entire event is surely tragic, I feel that the most horrific aspect of this tragedy is that this "mental case" shot an innocent 9 year old girl to death in cold blood and the news focuses largely on the Congresswoman as the majority of the story. Not to say "any" life is more important than any other, it just shows how slanted the media can be with stories of tragedies like this. Just my .02cents.

    Totally agree with you Jack. The ironic part is how the talk of the new Republican majority renewing it's attack and attempts to privatize social security. Let's take a snapshot look at the New York Retirement System. It's a "public-private partnership", where the private industry feeds off of lucrative funds and fees in the System. All the people in the private sector that go about railing against our pension plan should be careful; if they work in the finance industry, one of the largest industries in New York, they might be biting the hand that feeds them;
132.5 billion dollar value of the pension system as of March 2010:
These are some of the allocations from the System that the private finance industry controls, and the fees they collect as a result:
$51.5 billion invested in Domestic Equities
$21.2 billion invested in International Equities
$13 billion invested in Private Equities
$6.3 billion invested in Real Estate Loans
$34.6 million in Domestic Equities management fees
$17.9 million in Domestic Equities commissions
$70.1 million in International Equities management fees
$11.3 million in International Equities commissions
$76.9 million in Real Estate Management fees
$115.8 million in Private Equities management fees
$48.7 million in Absolute Return Strategy management fees
The pension system money is invested out there in the private sector; building businesses,EDIT: Oh yeah, creating jobs in the private sector, developing technologies, both here in the U.S. and overseas. Public money is intertwined in the private sector; the same way a cop or firefighter makes a salary off taxes, pays income tax, pays property tax, etc.
Cops and firefighters have become just a convenient target for those opportunistic politicians who play people through the media, who sell the news, etc. We're the whipping boy; part jealousy, envy (who would have ever thought people in the private sector would be envious of what civil servants get?) I think it says more about how far the mighty have fallen, as opposed to how far the civil servant has come.

By the way, we work 10 hr. days and 14 hr. nights. 9 days is 90 hrs. This is just another attempt for the mayor to justify the cuts that he has made and wants to make in the future. Let me guess, the mayor is going to complain in january that the FD went over our overtime budget. He has created this problem by demoting and laying off FF's. Now he is paying time and a half to fill the vacancies he created. Not too smart is he?

Its so bad because the JN says it is and we should all be mad as hell because it must be bad because elected/appointed officials who must produce something to prove they are doing there job
Since, these numbers are averages, we can skew them in many ways. If the majority of the firefighters each took fewer days and a dozen or so took much more you would get to the same numbers. They want you to assume that sick leave is just for when you have a cold, but members also use it when they are injured (offduty) such as from an MVA or sports or if they have a long standing medical illness. A serious MVA could take 6 months to recover from (and be able to perform as a firefighter) that could take 60 or more days.
Finally comparing sick days of people who work 24 hour shifts and 8 hour shifts is a little unfair. If a ff is out sick for 1 tour its 24 hours of duty (If its on a Monday, he is off the next 3 days and is not due back until friday), but the general worker is may still call in on tue and Wed.

If you have any intentions or hopes in staving off disastrous public safety cuts, you have to get out in front of the problem before it becomes a reality. It takes time to garner public support. You NEED some information to educate the constituents of a certain district. If the city council and the mayor in Yonkers are kicking the idea of such drastic cuts as company closures around, then that's fuel enough to start a campaign to stop them.
As someone who has a great deal of family in Yonkers, this is of utmost concern. I don't care if Santa in the North Pole writes Amicone to try and persuade him to continue funding public safety.

We are currently in the process of picking a system. We have tested many, and visited with departments to see what they were using. Bottom line is nothing is perfect so you have to assign priorities to your criteria. The first thing we did was to establish criteria, then we had several manufactures come in and demo there product with us. From there we were able to narrow the field to 4 devices. Further testing was done on those to narrow the field even further until there were only 2 left.
While the doulble brake device seems to be the best choice at first glance it did not do well in the remote anchor testing.
As far as the rope getting caught in the Escape artist: I am being told that there has not been a case when an aramid fiber rope was being used, if someone has conflicting info please let me know.
There is a new design of the Escape artist which we will be testing this week.
The XO had the same issue initially. Before the U-bolt was installed they had many jups on that device, until one day someane got the rope caught. That incident was why the u-bolt was developed.
There must be a fromal process with written evauations, criteria, goals etc. Remeber once you establish your criteria it is highly unlikely you will find a device that fits them all so you will be forced to prioritize. If there were such a device everyone would buy it.
Once you have gotten to the stage where you have picked the :
    Device
    Rope
    Length of rope
    anchor type
    Bag
How to intergrate it into your gear.
Then you will have the task of developing a traing program, which will include course material, initial training, and a refresher traing schedule.
Also to be considered is the fact that this is a rapidly growing market with frequent new developments. This is not to say you should wait for something better, more that there should be constant research for further developments.

Something to keep in mind was the point mentioned by M'Ave. Devices such as the Exo, F4 and a bunch of others will hold you in place while you are hanging out the window. Pull on the lever without a brake hand on the rope and you will drop really fast. Anyone looking into some sort of system should consider a device with a double brake. It will hold you in place until you pull the lever like the others but if you panic and pull it to much and you will once again stop. This was pointed out to me by members of my job that are currently evaluating different systems and devices. The CMC Escape Artist comes in a double brake model and appears to be one they are liking the most so far. Just something else to consider in your quest for the right system.

This is a very serious issue. The standards that define our job are in serious peril. We're going to see the degradation of our profession in the hands of left leaning politicians who would rather hand this job out to anyone to achieve a racial balance instead of putting in the time to educate and better everyone. STAND-UP!

I KNEW this was going to happen here, that members were going to "take the bait" that the City of Buffalo threw out to see where it would stick. Well if you bit into this ALCOHOL arguement, you've been BUFFALOED.
First, it is disgraceful that news organizations do not even do the DUE DLIGENCE to find out what happens after a LODD funeral; it's called a COLLATION, not a "reception", not a "party", nothing other than a collation, which is a religious term meaning "light meal." The term reception is reserved for happy occassions; like a wedding reception.
THOUSANDS of firefighters, career and volunteer alike, some from as far away as Australia attended two LODD funerals. The Union did the right thing in providing those members with a Collation, where brother firefighters, law enforcement, ems, all came together to commiserate, after standing at attention for TWO LODD funerals.
Ever been to a LODD funeral? Ever stand at attention for three or four hours? Then imagine this day, and doing it TWICE. Think you might want a bite and a brew, drink, soda, coffee afterward? Of course you would, so let's stop being ridiculous about this issue.
This is a simple case of a CONTRACT VIOLATION. The union has an ironclad, protected by LAW agreement with the C.O.B. which states, the city will pay the union $12,500 for a LODD funeral for expenses incured. Period. It doesn't say, "well, we'll pay for this line item or that line item", it says will pay for expenses. The City has violated the contract, the union has probably grieved the issue, this will be mediated, arbitrated, wind up in court, and the city will LOSE...and THEN PAY.
There are difficult and protracted contract negotiations between the city and the union right now. The firefighters and cops have marched on city hall, and many believe bringing ALCOHOL into the disscusion was merely an attempt to smear the union.
Let's please not get into who drinks what and where with who's 2% money or fundraising, etc. If you engage in that, you have been Buffaloed in this case.
No on-duty members imbibe at colations, period. The insinuation is thrown out to see where it will stick, and it landed right here on emtbravo, and you guys are missing the issue of a contract violation, and making judgements that you should not be making; whether "taxpayer's money" should be used for alcohol is a bogus disscusion. Corruption in gov't is rampant. Governors spend millions of dollars decorating their offices. Legislators are bought by lobbyists. Our tax money by the billions has been thrown at large corporations, who in turn have handed out RECORD BONUSES to their incompetent CEOs. YOUR money at work fellas. Where is the uproar about that?
Let us remember what we are talking about here, and if some locals like INIT's pay for their own expenses for an LODD funeral, well they obviously don't have a LODD funeral expenses line in THEIR contract, or they'd be getting reimbursed for it.

Bob, it was obvious that your comments were not aimed at the volunteer fire service and that this other guys comments were aimed at the career fire service.
Of course, you didn't take the bait and remained on the high road.
Hey guys, in my opinion this whole thread has been basically a bunch of petty nonsense (with a few common sense points made here and there).
Why even bother responding to posts like the original post in this thread? It's a losing proposition no matter what you say. Of course, the waist straps are supposed to be worn. We can go on and on about why the waist straps are supposed to be worn and then we who have put an SCBA on and off and on and off many thosuands of times in our careers could list all the reasons that the waist straps might not be buckled at a particular moment in time. Then, others would tell us how technically we're wrong and that they should always be worn and they could list all the reasons for this. And technically they are right. So what? Who cares? Why bother?
This time, the guy got his facts right. The waist straps weren't worn and they should have been. Great observation brother, good for you...
