  1. Sounds all too similar to the Paramedic beaten outside a ballgame on the West Coast. Only recently did he regain consciousness.
  2. Forgive me if the answer is obvious to everyone here but I'm not in the fire service. What prevents one from running a hose down to the lake and getting water from the backyard or across the street?
  3. I don't recall saying anything in this thread about stealing jobs out of hospitals. You were saying something about opinions?
  4. Let's see how long it takes the a-hole's family to sue the poor girl for killing their "kind and gentle little boy". Uh-huh. Also only in America. Good for her in defending herself.
  5. I believe the preservation of human life comes above all else in their eyes. It's the same with Muslim law. Take for example the use of porcine insulin. Being from a pig you'd think this would violate kosher tenants left and right. But if it's the only insulin available and the patient would die without it, it is my understanding that it be used. (And after further reading, not only SHOULD it be used but it MUST be used). Google for more info. But good stuff to know. But it sounds like in a nutshell that if a life is in jeopardy, then all other jewish laws (save a few like murder) are right out the window.
  6. I believe you would have to do a full recert since you've been expired so long. Thankfully long gone are the days of you have to do the entire ORIGINAL class over again, but an entire RECERT class is certainly warranted since a lot of things have changed in 10+ years.
  7. I don't give much attention to forum trolls with names like "madlady" and only one post.
  8. Can someone post a link to where exactly the house was? Google maps places it right at the end of Twin Ponds between two lakes so I'm wondering why they needed 1 mile of 5" for water supply. (I'm gonna guess google maps' location is wrong?)
  9. Laurie was always a nice person whenever she came to the corp to visit and to pull her overnight shift on Friday nights. Always a smile on her face and a kind word to be said. She will be sorely missed. We've had a lot of fatal accidents up here. This one hits closer to home than most. RIP Laurie.
  10. Regardless of whether the REMSCO has the "power" to enforce policy statements, it SHOULD send out a big message to agencies who would fall under it's auspices. First time a patient dies and the family decides to accuse the EMS response times as being causative, medical malpractice lawyers could take that policy statement and run with it having a field day.
  11. Where did you get this silly idea? And this just highlights why we should always lock our rigs, especially on scenes. But we all know (in EMS that is) that a vast majority of the time that doesn't happen for one reason or another.
  12. What does Care1 cover in Kingston?
  13. Oh, the old Guild Home for the Aged Blind? I was wondering what was going to happen to that place. What are they calling it now?
  14. Where is their station in Yonkers? Would be interesting if they were right down the street from Empress like AMR used to be.
  15. One should also make a note that the Care1 name comes from the parent organization - a conglomerate of nursing homes. There isn't much information about the parent company online aside from some NJ operations (if that is indeed the same company) but it appears they are the parent organization/corporation for quite a few of the nursing facilities around the area. Their recent employment ads have listed them as having operations in New Rochelle and Yonkers as well, but I doubt that. Seems most of their work is in Northern Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Orange and Ulster. When they aren't actively on jobs they seem to like to post at the ERs - probably to be seen and pickup jobs out of those facilities.
  16. Talk to me when they come up with a system that will extinguish the fire without causing thousands in water damage.
  17. Bedside audits only get you a max of 4 hours, but if your on good terms with the doc it's an easy 0.25 hours (signature). But yeah Joe, it's been alluded to a LOT lately. We had a long discussion at the Phelps Audit about it. I hope it goes through as well. An occasional call review with one or two interesting calls including followup isn't a bad thing, but medical control contact hours make more sense.
  18. Damn it! Beat me to the REACT comment.
  19. Call Audits are getting harder and harder to find. Phelps scaled back their audits at the end of last year when Dr. Nigro started scaling back his activities. Several ERs in Weschester don't hold regular ones at all (Mount Vernon for one). There has been a lot of talk about getting rid of call audit requirements altogether in favor of something more along the lines of what HVREMSCO does with Medical Control Contact hours. I hope it proves to be true.
  20. We used to have Bill the Cat (from Bloom County on the side of the Peekskill VAC rig(s) for a while. The cartoon was small but amusing. Some thought it a tad unprofessional - clearly they had no sense of humor. I'm sure some buff on here has a picture of it.
  21. Rule #1 - Don't go hiking solo if you lack basic navigational skills. <sigh>
  22. Does this mean that IAFF firefighters wouldn't cross a Verizon picket line if one of the Verizon buildings were on fire?
