  1. Came across this video on the weather channel http://bcove.me/lsnjf2st Jersey City, NJ large fire spanning 2 apartment buildings. Video from helicopter
  2. New Rochelle PD's Harbor unit can provide divers as well as NRPD also having a seperate SCUBA team. They shoud be more then capiable of covering the Mamaroneck area.
  3. The idea of fining them because of false alarms is "great" in theory but where does the money go? I know that in some fire districts if the property or business owner gets a fine, the fire department does not see the money, the town does. That fine does not go to cover the costs of maintenance to the vehicles, fuel, etc. rather it goes into the towns pocket. As per the article responding to the false alarms "...wastes diesel fuel and increases wear and tear on the department’s equipment." Is the department going to receive the moneys from the fine to aid in covering those expenses and reduce the tax burden on the rest of the community? The biggest question that I have is what are they considering a false alarm? Like many others have already said on her, burnt popcorn is not a false alarm. What do you do when you have a person who has Alzheimer’s and is living at home with their spouse who is capable of taking care of their needs and said person puts a slipper in the toaster and turns the toaster on? This is not a false alarm. Do you start to fine them as well because you go there every few weeks for similar such thing? The end result of that would be, in my opinion, that they would pull out the central station system. While that would eliminate some calls for us, aren’t we endangering the life for the 2 people living in that house as well as putting ourselves into a position that we are going to be responding to a structure fire, putting ourselves into a more dangerous position, instead of a simple slipper in the toaster that can be taken care of with a water can or dry chem?
  4. I remembered that their is a place onVirginia Rd in North White Plains that always has what look like used patrol cars. A quick google search came up with North White Auto Sales There info is 43 Virginia Rd, White Plains, NY. 914-997-8948
  5. not sure how good they are but SWSP.com also sells used police cars. They say that they recondition them, but guess that can mean just about anything. Also as someone else mentioned, auctionsinternational.com casually will have used police as well as vehicles from other municipality fleets. Prices are usually fair. Have bid on a few things but yet to be the lucky winner.

  8. It was delivered as shown so we still need to have it stripped and lettered. Should be done in the coming weeks. Once it is all done, the page will be redone with the updated photos.
  9. Sorry for the delay in getting some more pics up... My camera died on me recently so this is the best I can do for now (about 41 pics) http://www.millwoodfire.org/Apparatus/L52/
  10. how can the DA's office let a piece of s*** like this guy go AGAIN!! it seems like they have no interest in justice. If the avg person makes a "mistake" we are crucified, but scum bag career criminals like this seem to just get to walk. Maybe its just me, but where is the justice for the people that he has wronged? and how many 'chances' do we give people?
  11. With the rising gas prices I was wondering if any departments are using or looking into hybrid vehicles for their chief's cars or utilities. With the new hybrids being in both sedan and SUV models, I would think that there is a big cost savings to a department. In general just better for the environment. Heck, it couldn't hurt on your public image either. What would anyone see as a down side to using one? Anyones thoughts on the matter???
  12. A few people on here have said that by running the lights and other equipment, it will shorten the life of the batteries. Does anyone know this for a fact, or is it speculation? Also, with LED lights pulling low drain on the system (not sure about radios and other) I would think the batterys should be able to handle it for a fair amount of time, and once they do start to loose there charge, wouldn't the Gas engine turn on to supplement if needed? With some departments the chiefs cars get more miles put on them as "daily Drivers" then emergency vehicles, or that is what I see. For those depts, I would expect it to be a big cost savings. The ford escape for example is only 6k more RETAIL than the gas only version. You would pay that off in the first year or 2 of the vehicles life in gas savings I would think. For the agencies that have gone with some hybrids, Did the agency or town using them promote them to the taxpayers in any way, and if so, what was the reaction?
  13. Millwood recently put into service the Rescue 42 system and we really like it. Every system has it pros and cons and not 1 system is best for all departments. Rescue 42 provided us with what we were looking for / needed / wanted. One of the things that I liked about Rescue 42's system is the versatility it gave us. 1 set of tools for extrication stabilization, as well as other rescue applications, such as the tri-pod and aframe applications. with a working load of 18000 pounds, we didn't see many applications (in our district) where this would be a limit to us. They are very light weight compared to other products that I looked at and over all, very simple to use and set up.
  14. Personaly, I prefer to shoot in RAW. Not that there is any real problem shooting in JPEG, more a personal pref., but I generaly do not shoot fire scene. After editing anything I want to, I will save it as JPEG on my computer BUT keep the orignal RAW file as well. As for a fire scean, I dont see any reason to shoot one over the other (again, perfer raw), I think its more a matter of personal preferences and what you are confertable doing.
  15. Jonesy368 I sent you a private message regarding your problem. Will be more than happy to help.
  16. For the laptops go with the Toughbook. anything else for this application would be a waste of your money as you most likely will be repairing it on a regular basis, especialy if the uinit is going to be semi moble and you are bringing it out into the field for your IC to use at calls. There is alot of software out there that would make it very nice to have out of the truck and near your incident weather it be hazmat, MVA, structure fire.... I have worked wiht the Toughbooks and several other vendors and while more expensive, its worth the money for this.
  17. the fastest way I think is still your rope arround your air pack like your were taught in survival. NYS law has changed and now requires all departments (with very few exceptions...FDNY) to issue harnesses and rope systems. In my opinion, unless the harnesses is pre-connected and setup, from what I have seen, it takes to long to get yourself ready. the "old" method is still the best if you get yourself jammed up.
  18. Millwood Fire departments

  20. Just a reminder that the requested registration deadline is fast approaching. If anyone wants to attend and hasn't already done so, please register in advance, but we may be allowing registration at the door.
  21. One correction on the Flyer. The register date is not sept 14, but rather Oct 14th. Sorry for the typo. Also, this training is not only open to Fire/EMS/PD, but to everyone. I do know of a few body shop guys that are planning on attending as they have to deal with the cars after they have been wrecked. Again, sorry for the typo.....
  22. It shouldn't just be the elderly that are required to retake a road test. There are many middle aged drivers out there that don't know how to drive properly. While our older population are the ones that may most need it, how many times have we all seen someone driving and thought to ourself that they shouldn't be on the road, only to see that its a middle aged person. Personally I think that we all should have to retake a road test of something of the sort every 5 or 10 years. Maybe more often for certain age groups or those who have certain offenses(tickets) and accident numbers. And just another thought, we have so many people driving these BIG SUV's that have no clue how to drive something of that size. They learned how to drive on a little Honda Civic, and now drive a monster truck. How about we start requiring different class drivers licenses for different vehicles as well. Its not that much different as what we currently have in requiring a commercial licenses for some other vehicles. Lets face it, a ford excursion is a very different thing than a Saturn. Wider turning radius, bigger blind spot, and every thing else. How can the states say that the 2 things are the same and the licenses that are needed to operate them is no different. I know this is a little off topic, but was wondering what others thought. b
  23. The first 3 min seemed nicely done, but then a 5 min pic slide show kinda killed it for me. 8 min is WAY too long. Cant see too many people sitting and watching it. But, like I said, I liked the first 3 min. seemed well done to that point.
  24. I have to say that it is a well thought out rig. Not a fan of the tilt bumper, I dont see it serving any purpose other than one more thing to go wrong, but I may be mistaken. As far at the preconnects and tools being mounted there, I like it. It seems like a good location to put them for easy deployment and repacking. Also, from my initial look at things, it seems like they used there space wisely. Making this into a all in one is a good way to save on money by NOT buying 4 or 5 different specialty rigs, thus savings the taxpayers money on the individual rigs, as well as on insurance and fleet maintance. Looks like theres guys did there homework before specing out the rig.
