That makes zero sense. But it's motivated by politics, not common sense.

Riddle me this. Why is it that departments think that one engine and one truck is enough manpower for an extra alarm?

You're calling for more help. Why not call for ENOUGH help?

I was looking at that ambulance, wondering to myself what was missing.

Then it hit me...  Lights, it needs MORE lights.

Curious, do they have two sets of gear and will they split like RPS to cover a second call?

Oh- and one more thing:  Please don't make it anyone's fault but our own that these calls tie up the medic. YOU can solve that one with priority dispatch and common sense. Stop sending ALS on calls for falls  with no LOC.  (Seth covered that in an earlier thread) If that is asking too much, then send medics NO lights, NO siren, in an in-service status until cancelled or the call is triaged to BLS.

I have to say I am saddened by the content of this thread.  Both my parents died in 2014, and both spent time in an Atria in Westchester- they did not die there, but both were moved by EMS during their stays.
It might seems obvious, but the thread makes me want to point out:  These facilities DO NOT MANUFACTURE OLD PEOPLE. These pt's are going to get old and frail no matter where they live. I would rather have a safe, carpeted monitored building with AN ELEVATOR, rather than dozens of folks in dozens of private homes, UNmonitored, UNreliebly medicated, falling and being on the floor for hours before being noticed.
I ma pretty sure there is no age range excluded by your EMT class. There is no guarantee of exciting calls. I BET if we issued guns to the facility staff and told them to shoot anyone that falls, so every call came in as a gunshot, there would be no problem covering, and no complaining about it (well, other than pt's and families).
As per an article in the NY Times a few years back, nationwide EMS call volume is up 247% in last 30 years.  More since then I bet.
I have NEVER seen an EKG tech complain that a patient that needed an EKG was not sick enough for them. Never seen a RESPIRATORY therapist  complain that the lungs were not wheezy enough for them to give a treatment. Never had a PHLEBOTOMIST say that they were wasting time on drawing blood on a particular pt. It is ONLY the EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECH who feels that they are only there to serve pt's they feel are worthy.
I am sorry, but things don't stay the same. The job is changing. The pt population is changing. Safer cars with airbags = fewer sexy trauma calls. Meds = a HUGE decrease in V-fib arrests.   Those same meds = a larger elderly population that just want to grow old in safety and comfort. Be nice, be professional: your job is to provide that.
Or as one of my favorite movie lines, from Ghostbusters goes, " I am sure a person with your skills and qualifications would have not trouble finding  work in either the food service or housekeeping in industries."
    sorry for the ad-

The TerraStar chassis has had a number of issues.  It is very challenging trying to find a chassis that will work, last and is sustainable.

Is this the evolution of the STAT Team? I assume they still do some in house stuff. Any idea who runs and staffs it now?

Empress recently placed into service these 2 2015 Ford F-350/AEV Type I ambulances for the Westchester Medical Center Critical Care Transport contract.

Here's my experience with staffing levels. Worked in Syracuse, NY back in the 1990s and 2000s. City of 100000 or so. Daytime EMS including transfers was a max of 10. Unit hour utilization was tracked meticulously. Night time was 4 ambulances over night. That was usually enough.
Where I work now, I'm in a town of 35k. We have one ambulance staffed and cross staff three others. We get mutual aid in very infrequently, maybe once a week.
Mt. Pleasant is the same geographic size about - 35 square miles. So, five dedicated BLS trucks seems a bit much. Probably do it with three. Depends what benchmarks for response time you want to hit, and how much to spend. I bet you could do it with three trucks and one ALS unit if you triaged a good number of calls down to BLS or AEMT level.
There are formulas for this. If you want service at your door in four minutes or less 90 % of the time, add more trucks and stations. It's not rocket science. The city of Syracuse (Fire, not ambulance) has their stations arranged to be anywhere in the city in four minutes. For a city of 100k that's 10 stations. EMS does system status management to position units to be on scene within 8 minutes 90 percent of the time.

Compare what the response to this fire is Newburgh WAS to what it would be in New York City.
Or in westchester. Or in your town.
My town would have about as many members on the working fire as they do on the second alarm. Why is that? Why is minimal staffing ok? Newburgh is a union department. Why don't the members push for more resources to be called in.
We know how many people it takes to fight a fire effectively. Why in any jurisdiction to we allow this level of response to continue?

The chassis choice (according to previous posts from the YFD folks) was related to engine and chassis compatibility.

I think one thing that this points out is how little people know about fire districts and how they work.
People expect that town government and services are integrated. A separate entity making its own decisions can be hard at accept.
    People also don't like surprises.

    Cool. Anyone else use cisterns?
We have a number of them in our town. New construction can have sprinklers or cisterns.
Don't quite have the elegant redundancy of San Fran, but cisterns are part of our water supply system.

Poor kid. Horrible way to die.
Very interested in the training records for him and those in the fire with him.
Mind you, it could happen to any of us. Experienced FDNY guys have been found with air in their tanks and face pieces removed or regulators removed.
    Sucks all around, for sure.
