Why not try what Greenburgh does and let the PDs run the bus, BLS? Could this even work? Someone with a better knowledge of Pelham feel free to respond.

I don't think it would work well. FD should fill the role of providing the ambulance...it is more of an FD function IMO than a PD one.

The way Greenburgh does it, IMO, is ridiculous. Instead of paying an EMT $12.00 an hour to fill out the staffing on the ambulance (The ALS ambu is staffed by 1 paramedic, the BLS by one Police officer/EMT, with flycar police paramedics), they prefer to either take a Police Officer or Firefighter out of service to drive the ambulance, or rely heavily on Mutual aid. But GPD is a whole different topic,lol!

Hopefully, Pelham won't even consider this huge step backwards.

I drove the new flycar yesterday from Yonkers EMS HQ to Pelham town hall for display & was flagged down by 3 cops and they were totally shocked when they found out about the loss of "their" bus!

On a side note, it's a sick flycar! Photos are in the process of being uploaded to X635 as we speak......

As FAC911 wrote there will be a delay in the bus, starting 1/1/05, but nobody has stated that there is that problem now. If 38A1 is covering a job in Mt. Vernon or Yonkers, the next available unit for Pelham or Pelham Manor could be in the farthest part of Yonkers. Also after 11pm 38A1 goes out of service, and calls are covered by either MVA1 or another bus. An advantage the flycar is going to bring is increased communication between the scene, and Empress Dispatch. When they took the original 38A1 bus out of pelham, they never replaced the PD/or Fd radios....so nobody could contact the bus except for 60 Control, via Empress Central. It will also mean less calls for "expedites", i am sure the Empress staff will appreciate that!!. In response of Fd doing nothing, PFD responded to over 350 calls requiring medical assistance (EMS, MVA), I can't speak for Pelham Manor's numbers off hand, but I know they also lose calls by not being sent to 95 (which is in their district) and The Hutch above the NYC line, which depending on where the call originates, you may get FDNY, and OLM EMS. As with anything new there will be some scepticism, but let's see how it works, before it's crucified!!

The fly car has way too many lights. It in itself will be more than enough to adiquatly light any scene at night, making it look like it was 1 in the afternoon. Hopefully it doesnt cause more MVA's due to all of the flashing lights, haha.

as to WAS' question, there are MORE LEDs on 38M1 than on any of the new 45Medic flycars. Glenn from 60 Control did the entire flycar....... excellent job!

With that said, this vehicle is an ADDITION to the fine service that Empress has provided the Town of Pelham for the past 6 years. There are NO change as to how an Ambulance responds to the Town of Pelham once this vehicle goes into service. This vehicle will be staffed by Medics from Empress, leased to the Town on an anual contracted price.

There are 12 strobes, not 10

And if you are curious as to what vehicle has the most lights, the current Mechanixtown (Orange County), Chiefs Car, holds the record to my knowledge.

as posted earlier, Glenn from 60 control did the light package. I believe he has a garage in bronxville.

PFDR45, The equipment that will be placed on the new fly car is what leased on an annual basis means. Pelham only owns the vehicle, and the medic is provided by Empress, for which the town signed a contract for. But the town has no equipment for the medic to use, so they are leasing Empress' equipment in order to outfit the fly car with the ALS gear.

Someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Damn, I miss flying over to Pelham from st joes with the former 801...but we did handle it better in an ambulance...you need to know where you are going and then it takes a lot less time...x123

Yea your still o/s waiting for a ambulance. Heard It took a BLS txp unit 22 mins to Find a job in pelham while the medic was o/s!

oh & don't forget the crossing guard duty (partially serious)... The duty medic has to be at certain places at certain times (train station, schools, churches etc) and sit for hours on end (this is a pelham thing not Empress')

that is enough not to want to work out there but then there is having to wait for a bus which is an entirely different problem.....

Kind of reminds me when they were talking about hiring EMTs to cover EMS in SLeepy Hollow. Rumor had it the mayor was going to hire EMTs but pput them to work at meter maids when they weren't on calls. But then the VAC turned around and the need was no longer there.

What's wrong with being given a post, you do it with Empress all the time? As for response times of buses, I haven't seen it yet. As I said earlier, there was always a wait when 38A1 was in S. Yonkers doing a job...only thing that has changed is now there is ALS on scene.(YES I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE MAY BE A NEED FOR RAPID TRANSPORT) No bus availble..MUTUAL AID. Residents were under an assumption that whenever they saw the bus sitting IFO the FD, "help was just round the corner!"...WRONG... How many times was 38A1 assigned to calls in Mt. Vernon or Yonkers, and there was no bus available for longer than 20 minutes? there were instances of up to 30 minutes, should that be acceptable? What were the reasons for those times? Distance? Lost? if the second why not call for a police assist? Amazing that people complain about sitting at various locations, but don't complain when they spend a good part of their shift sitting on a border waiting for units to free up!

Empress YONKERS uses "posts" for a system that uses System Status Managment, where you move around a lot to make sure the busiest areas are always covered and keep a consistent response time citywide. You do this by maintaining multiple numeric posts. It's hated by most Medics or EMTS, but in a busy system it is kind of tolerable since you are out working a lot. On slow, cold days though.......

As for lower volume, 1 ambulance systems, it's torture to have to sit on a post,in your ambulance for 8 hours or more especially in the cold and conditions of winter. It's boring, you're on top of your partner all day, theres no place to go to the bathroom easily, its cramped in the bus, you're sucking fumes sometimes, sitting on broken down dirty seats. Theres no TV,shower, kitchen,restock,or office facilites. It's also not enviromentally friendly to have a vehicle spitting out fumes uneccaasrily all day, and it significantly shortens the service life of the vehicle.

But I thought Rescue 45-Alpha responded from the DPW garage in the Manor?

And if this was SoCal, the FF's would be Medics off the Engine, and Empress would provide the bus.

you know...pfdr45...you should have to sit at a train station or something...when we were on post we could hide from the nosy/lost public...it was never supposed to be my job as an emt/paramedic to play public relations specialist too...the paid firefighters get paid enough...and get all the luxury's of stations and all that jazz and the people don't care about the ambulance...until they need it of course...if funding went the way it should (based upon call volume) and there was a standard for ambulance vehicles than maybe it would be ok to sit on post all of the time but there ain't...then we would all have ambulances with beds for night (that we don't have to share with patients), tv's, telephones, computers (not our own lap tops) and we would get to eat a whole meal without either a call coming in or some volly ff bothering us about why we are not sitting at the train station showing off the new truck to the taxpayers that don't care anyway.

You can't blame the BLS TXP bus. When I did my first call in Pelham I couldnt find the map that we were assured 'every bus has,' I had been working for Empres for three days and my partner for roughly two months. And the both of us lived around Yorktown. After a few frantic phone calls to friends we finally found it, and it did take us 20 minutes. But that's not because we got lost, instead, we were coming from North Central Bronx.......
