Croton Wires/Pole Down w/ Cars on Fire 9/4/11

5 posts in this topic

Here's a few cell phone pics from "onlocation's" cell phone from the incident on Brook Street early this morning.

Apparently the contractor for Con Edison was moving their truck and ran over the guide cable for a pole, which then snapped in half and fell. The wires came in contact with the vehicles in this lot.

Thanks for the photos.

Sadly, when the sh*t hit the fan, the contractor paniced and did nothing to control the scene.... E119 was allowed to pull up Brook Street, about 20 - 24 ft parallel from all three primaries. Plus the grassy area under the broken pole and downed power lines, normally used for parking of a local auto repair shop, was wide open and members started parking their cars there... The contractor never tried to stop or warn anyone of what was going on in the area...

Only after getting set up, and turning on all E119 scene lights, did anyone inform us the truck which snapped the pole, had primaries on it, was still in gear and energized... Once we found out the issues of this call, all members staged across the street until the contractor told us the lines were disconnected... Then we proceeded with putting out the car fires.. But it was still not over, as soon as a Con Ed offical was on the site, we were informed the disconnect of the lines were just a quick fix, and we were still in danger of the downed lines being re energized.... so again we backed off...

So, becareful of all these contractors helping out after the storms, they are NOT Con Ed, and may not operate as we are used to, with Con Edison....
