After closed-door contract talks broke down last month, the city and its firefighters union are headed back to arbitration to resolve a long-simmering dispute over staffing.

The two sides are due to appear before an independent arbitrator on Jan. 9, three months after they called off the proceeding in a good-will effort to iron out the disagreement on minimum staffing levels as part of regular contract talks.

“We believe we have made a good-faith effort” at negotiating, said Yonkers Fire Local 628 President Barry McGoey, but “the city is thus far not agreeable to our terms.”
