FDNY to spend $5M to reduce EMS response times

After EMS response times for life-threatening emergencies jumped by more than 20 seconds last year, the FDNY plans to spend $5 million on two pilot programs to handle what it calls a record number of emergency calls.

Starting this summer, the FDNY plans to use 10 “fly cars” — EMS supervisor SUVs carrying a paramedic — to emergencies in the Bronx ahead of ambulances, fire officials told the Daily News on Monday.

The Fire Department also plans to send out a “tactical response” group of 10 additional basic life support tours — ambulance teams staffed by EMTs, not paramedics — to neighborhoods in the Bronx experiencing the highest call volume.

I hope FDNY*EMS uses it's resources to develop an EMS Prevention program one day.

Shouldn't supervisors be able to operate as flycars anyways, or is this just a change in policy allowing supervisors to act as a flycar? Are these the "Conditions" cars?

So what do the bosses in the fancy SUV's do now if they don't go on calls?

They go on calls as supervisors, serve as liaison to other agencies and deal with hospital back-logs when EMS units are stacked up waiting for ER stretchers.  They manage schedules, equipment, training, time off, and perform other duties.

To minimize the importance of that in a city like NY is unfair.
