  1. My department is currently working on SOG's for brush/woods fires. As of right now we can enter the woods to get a size up and try to knock down or stop the fire but if there is no structures threatened we stay out of the woods and wait for forestry to get there with the plows, on large scale fires our Wildfire team is alerted to respond. Good post, ill have to bring up fast team to the officers of the team.

  3. For the most part, Officers in my Dept. are pretty good with size ups- example-E24's on scene single story educational facility nothing showing from 3 sides....we got a plug...we will be out investigating. On the other hand which burns my a** is when somebody goes on scene and says nothing other than that they have arrived. Does anybodys Dept have a SOP/SOG on this?
  4. Seems like theres alot more people on this forum critizing others for what they would do. Quick to go after somebody and you havent shared what your so knowleglble self would do for this senerio. As for me- Officer on the engine- establish the command, Call for a 2nd alarm. send a line to the fire floor, 2nd due engine-send a crew to floor above fire. send a crew to the top floor. Due a 360 of the building if possible. send my 3 rd engine in with the 2nd line send my first due truck in for S/R, 2nd due to open up the fire floor. Next due spiecal service unit rather a Squad or truck assist with evac if thats been completed have them assume the RIT on the A side. Im sure my B/C has arrived by now and give him a face to face. he may not take the command from me or designate me as he/she wishes. With the intial attack failing- call 3rd alarm and spacial call 2 more trucks and 2 more heavy rescue squads. With 3rd alarm on scene I should have 9 engines,5 trucks, 3 Heavy Rescues, 2 more battalion chiefs and 2 operations duty chiefs. If my first alarm crews that went above the fire floor have completed searchs that proved negitive i would send them to fire floor/room to help put the fire out. My first 2 trucks would have the OVM and drivers get the building laddered with both ground ladders and the sticks/buckets ready for rescue. Set up Divisons/Sectors and assign Batt. chiefs or OIC of engines/trucks to each floor and side of building. Conduct a acountabilty report every 10 mins. Have EMS set up a Rehab.
  5. coat- inside pocket- extra hood ( for when the stench gets to bad on my other hood) left outside bellows pocket- Fire gloves right outside bellows pocket- leather gloves, window punch, tire stem remover, safety glasses. gerber muti-tool. on my pants the only pocket i have is a rear pocket like on a pair of jeans just enough for BSI gloves and a couple bucks for a drink on the way back from a job. thats my stuff for when im at the Rescue Squad. As for at work the pockets on my coat suck, they are so small i cant fit anything in them so the only thing i can get in them is BSI gloves and window punch and tire stem tool. as for my pants they have the huge pockets on them that i cant stand cause they get in the way and give you too much room to put too much stuff in them. so alls i keep in them is work gloves(leather) and my fire gloves. When i was a rookie i had my pockets packed with goodies. I just leaned that "u dont use the stuff and it just gets in the way half the time. The only thing i wish i did have in my pockets is wire cutters. it seems that every house fire i go to im getting hung up in wires from the ceiling. as for all the other stuff am i really going to use it? ........no cause one of the probies or buffs will be there with pockets full of junk

  13. mms://media.strana.ru/docs/06/01/23/271195.asf Watch this (graphic) - mms://media.strana.ru/docs/06/01/23/271195.asf Vladivostok, Russia, a city of 600,000+, last week. Fire lanes blocked, took more than 30 minutes to get apparatus close enough to the building. Groups of people apparently physically picked up cars to move them to allow the firefighters to get close enough to the building. Fire stairways/exits blocked. The boxes you see being thrown upwards were apparently being thrown by folks on the ground to a lower roof to help cushion the fall of the jumpers. At least 9 dead so far. Talks of a gov't coverup. Building co-owner, 2 bank employees (Bldg. at least partially occupied by a bank) and 2 fire inspectors arrested and charged with various offenses relating to allowing the situation to occur

  16. My Department responds with the HAZMAT TEAM. and a Battalion Chief and if need be a Asst./Deputy Chief. The medic unit that runs out of the HAZMAT station responds with the team. My Dept covers 1200 Sq miles. The medic and EMT on the medic unit are Techs and most of the medics have special training for medical HAZMAT responses. our 911 center will send out a alpha numeric page to all off duty HAZMT memeber to respond. I will get more info to post on a SOP from the HAZMAT TEAM leader.

  20. Ambulances in my department are staffed with a EMT or EMT-I and a Medic. 1 medic unit is dispatched to all reported fires. upon arrival depended on the size of the fire the crew from the medic unit will dress up and pack out and help in fire supression. Most of the time the medic units are on-secne first and are able to give a good size up, locate water supply and check for entrapment or injuries. If theres no injuries they will pack-out and perticapate in fire suppression. While doing so they may request for a 2nd unit for rehab/txp. If at anytime there is a injury or a victim is found, that crew is pulled out to perform PT care. All employees with HCFR are certified as at least a EMT. All medic units are equipt with SCBA's except for 3 units which are staffed with non-cross trained personnel (who worked for HCEMS before the EMS&FIRE merger and had the option not to cross train) Sorry for getting off the subject- the medic units know to park in a postion where they will be able to get out of the scene in case of tranport or a pt is needed. for the most part they may park down the road alittle bit, load all nesecery Medical equipment onto strecher and report to the command post or to the front bumper of the first in engine. there they can determine where to set up a rehab, where water is given and vitals are taken. if your vitals are not WNL you are held in rehab untill they are WNL. Everyone who uses a SCBA most go through rehab and name, vitals are recorded.
  21. My Department has well over 300 of the new packs and have never had such problems with them. I personlly like them. As for not liking them and a distraction, just takes a little training with them to get use to them. its alittle easier to look at the LED lights when in a fire then it is to find the Dispaly to see how much air i got left.
  22. Been to PG County to ride and it is crazy. They are way ahead of the times in the fire service. The stations ive been too arent Social clubs like most of the stations in westchester, These guys Love what they do. Most of the guys at Kentland are career in a surrounding countys or states. For anybody who hasnt went down for a weekend to ride, i suggest you do.
  23. Great Topic and some good info!! (I knew you had some smarts munson) LOL ALS I understand what you mean about not receiving the first part of a message. My department has all radios mobile and portables programmed with the beep when you key the mic. They are also programmed so that it will make a long beep if the radio isn’t hitting the tower; this lets you know your not getting out. Total pet peeve - People getting on scene and screaming on the radio and making things ten times worse then they are. Does anybody else think that a better Communications class should be intergraded into the fire service when taking classes???
  24. Congradulations Guys!!!!!! How about a List of Names and Departments they are going to and who all the instructors were
