  1. I have a tendency to get anxious, or at least, impatient, when I'm waiting for someone or something. Always have, probably always will. I can feel for you, there. Try and relax a bit. I don't know if I could wait four weeks for a response, but in your case here, I would follow up and send a snail-mail after two weeks, if you still haven't heard back by then. I would put in there that you had previously emailed, and not gotten a reply. The proper spelling is Etiquette
  2. Which scanner are you looking to master? There's a ton of info online. This ought to get you started: http://myweb.cableone.net/marksscanners/index.html Special Thanks to TR54 for the link
  3. Hi Photounit I just downloaded and installed ProScan Version 1.7 build 1, and can't get it to play back recordings. The volume control on the GUI responds to the scanner volume control, set record to Activity and skip silence. I have *.*.WAV files that populated the Audio Recordings tab, but when I click play, nothing happens. COM port is set COM4 BAUD rate 115200. Any clues? Thanks [edit] I located the audio files in the program folder, they're all 1kb (empty)[/edit]
  4. You are correct, JM15, I stand corrected. After further research, I found there are certain model Uniden scanners which support the Fire Tone Out feature: BC396T, BC996T, BR330T, and BC15T support the FTO mode. The only thing is you can't scan and monitor FTO at the same time. And not all tone out formats are supported.
  5. No, there is no way to program the audible tones into (most) scanners. The tones themselves are a fixed pair of sequential audio frequencies transmitted over the dispatch operating channel to open the desired receiver. In a typical voice pager the pair of tones activates the alert circuit in order for the pager to open and alert, and depending on the receiver the sequence and tone frequencies have to be correct and in the correct order.
  6. Okay, Thanks John. Would you kindly let RWC130 know about that change, (PM is fine) He maintains the forum frequency list. That's where I got my information from.
  7. No such thing as a dumb question. Yes, that is what the tones are for. If you listen to a scanner on 46.26 you will hear everybody, calls being toned out, and all other communications on the channel. However, regarding a dispatch to a pager alert system, the tones you hear will only open the selected pagers. It doesn't matter what frequency, if it's on 46.26 or any other frequency, only the agency or town being dispatched gets their pagers opened for the call.
  8. WOW! Very nice to have. It looks like they have a real good setup going for themselves up there. Nice rigs, and a beautiful Corps headquarters, too. Plus they also have a cool website!
  9. Rob: "2758" is somebody you know? I'd like to find out the general area where he operates.... that way I can be on my best behavior, when in his neighborhood!!
  10. It never ceases to amaze me, the number of people who use 911 for non-emergency calls. "is it okay to work on a pickup in the street" The dispatchers handled the calls professionally. This is an issue all of our call-takers deal with, apparently on a never-ending basis.

  12. Thanks, Seth. Thanks, Guys! I guess I'll be seeing a lot more of you all, now! I'm glad to be a part of this team! ^click^me regards, Jack
  13. SteveOFD went over trunking features, above. Newer scanners can filter unwanted, shared frequency traffic, as well as track the new trunked systems. With conventional radio systems nowadays, different agencies in the same regional area can share the same frequency and not interfere with each other by using Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System (CTCSS ) These are also known as PL, or private line, and DPL, digital Private Line, ( and there are others ). What CTCSS (or DCS, a digital version) does is transmits a sub-audible tone along with the voice transmission that "opens" only the radios within the agency transmitting when the proper sub-audible frequency tone is part of the transmission. For example, I listen to Ossining Police which uses 154.115 with a DPL code of 043. Ossining PD shares this frequency with Bridgewater NJ and Lindhurst NJ PD. ALL transmissions going out on the frequency will be picked up by an older conventional scanner if it cannot filter out the unwanted out-of-state traffic by using the PL code. Bridgewater and Lindhurst are busy little departments! By using a newer PL (DPL) capable scanner, I no longer have to hear the NJ traffic or miss my local PD transmissions that were going on at the same time and were previously covered. With a trunktracking scanner, you can easily monitor a talkgroup whenever they transmit, since the shared trunk channel can change with every transmission. You could program a conventional scanner to "listen" on the trunk system frequencies, but it could become impossible to follow a particular talkgroup once other users on the shared system are talking. Depending on the radio, almost all the newer scanners can be programmed either manually or by attaching it to a computer with a USB or serial cable. Programming the scanner by Computer is by far, faster and easier. You don't have to spend $600 on a scanner. Any newer one, either base or handheld that will allow trunk tracking and lets you add frequency PL or DPL codes for the locale, is all you need. With more and more of Westchester Fire and EMS agencies migrating over to the new trunked system, you will be missing out on a lot of radio traffic unless you have one of the newer trunk-capable scanners.
  14. ConEd often gets called for heavy / specialized equipment to respond to emergencies, by many different agencies. There are boom trucks, cranes, and Vactors, and such, that are sometimes made available for response. Mainly in NYC, but these units can be requested locally, under certain circumstances, as well.
  15. Back in 1976, I had a crystal scanner, identical to this. I'll never forget that Christmas! The lights lit up one at a time as it scanned each channel. And Crystals weren't cheap!
  16. There is no such thing as a "best scanner" since there are so many models and makes in service. There are several models that some of our EMTBravo.com members are familiar with, and they have generously offered to assist other members with actually programming their scanner radios, for a nominal fee. See this topic thread: http://emtbravo.net/index.php?showtopic=21898 There is no charge for asking questions!! There are many free and low-cost programming and software products out there, for most makes of radios. Here is a site with quite a huge selection of scanner information: http://myweb.cableone.net/marksscanners/index.html If you have questions, and can't find what you need, the best place to ask is right here.
  17. ....I've melted a lot of snow, with Beer by-product....ahem... There is another "organic" solution, for road de-icing, and that is a mixture of Beet Juice and a salt-based brine. It supposedly lowers the effective temperature at which the sodium chloride melts ice, and helps prevent the ice from bonding to the road surface in the first place. These are generally regarded as a pre-treatment, and sand, salt, and liquid sodium solutions are applied as needed for extended operations.
  18. I would like to find out more about this device. Backing-up is a major source of preventable accidents we experience at my job.
  19. Hi Seth. Everything seems to be working fine "over there". I'm impressed with all the site's page-load speed improvements. No more waiting! Yay!
  20. I am all for a Premium Membership, I've already mentioned it several times, and it appears that it could be a near-future addition. That would not give any member carte blanche, bottom line: It's still a private site. Seth alone decides what gets included. These are his sites, these are his forums. It's not a democracy. We cannot post whatever we feel like. Forum community etiquette requires at a minimum: -being helpful to other members. -never respond to trolls or flame other users. -posts stick to the forum topic -never post for the sake of posting -remain reasonable when things get heated -know what it means to "agree to disagree -be polite, friendly and enjoy interacting with other people -ALWAYS say thank you There can be no: -baiting, flaming and swearing in the forums. -posts that are frequently off-topic and ask questions which are unrelated or repeated. -re-open topics closed by moderation. If everyone follows these guidelines, we will have a strong and dynamic, internet community. PS: Personal advice is only helpful if it is requested.
  21. I think the next cool feature which ought to be made available to those here who elect to support the site through a Premium Membership, would be the ability to ignore selected posters.... We have a block-list for PM's, ...so it's a natural extension...
  22. I'm surprised nobody got this yet.... It's for Air Mail.
  23. ... seems like now is as good a time as any, to implement a 'EMTBravoPremiumMember' paid subscription program......????
  24. PayPal is listing only the amount entered on their site payable to EMTBravo Emergency Fund- no shipping or any other charges are added. Seth, Good luck with getting the hosting, etc, sorted out. We're pullin' for ya. rgds, J&J
