Well, Mid June rolls around and it's time for vacation. I had this trip planned for a while. I gotta tell you, I had no intention of shooting any rigs on this last trip. Well, maybe two or three. Turned into a few more.
I left the Chateau and headed out to Mount Rushmore. After soaking in the sights, I stopped in the Firehouse Brewery in Rapid City, SD. From there it was down to LA via Denver, and Vegas.
My intention was simply to shoot one Los Angeles County Rig. But before I got that, it was Orange County Engine 63 I just happened to roll up on.

I headed over to OCFA Station 61, across the street from Knotts Berry Farm. Spied Truck 46 from the street. Took my shots, and took off for the north County.

My destination was an hour plus away and made it there in pretty good time. Especially for a guy who doesn't like to sit around twiddling my thumbs in traffic. I arrive in the little area called Pearblossom. LA County Station 79. Paid Engine and Patrol, Volunteer Engine in the back.

    Engine 79, 2007 KME
This was the Engine 79 that Code 3 did a few years back. It was given to the Volunteers when the KME was delivered, 1995 Freightliner. It replaced a 1970's vintage Crown.

This was all I really wanted, but the bug bit me. So I ran down to Yorba Linda, home of President Nixon, and a special lady friend of mine. Sorry boys, no pictures of her. But while waiting for her to get ready for a night out, I took some shots of OCFA Engine 32.

This was it until I went home. Or so I thought. I headed out to Tempe, Arizona to see another friend of mine. No intentions at all to shoot anything, as evidenced by me driving out with my friends daughter and her boyfriend, and the bf saying, "Hey look, smoke!!" Had to follow, and it was Mesa, Engine 201, and I don't know which Truck. Junkyard fire. Shot taken with the cell.

Finished up my trip with a few days on the shore. Back to work, and in between, a little trip to the city of Brotherly Love.
First stop, Engine 29, Medic 15, and Rescue 1. Rescue 1 didn't come out too good, and you guys deserve a little better from me.

Next stop, Center City and Chinatown.
    Engine 20

For some reason, I can't reply to my own topic. So I am going to finish up on here.
Next stop, the Battleship of the West, Squrt 57.

Northbound, Engine 50 and Truck 12.
    Brand new KME

We bid Philadelphia adieu..Next stop, next post, the Silver City Fest, day 1.

Looking at the photos I was amazed of the photo of Bogota NJ engine with two half wits riding on the roof. I can see the headlines now "Firefighter injured in parade" . Why was this allowed ? You cant fix stupid.

Right off the bat, they'd be getting an engine and truck. This is a debate amongst me and my fellow dispatchers, should it get the 5-7 or a structural response. Now, if I were the boss of the Engine Company, I'd ask for the box to be transmitted, which would give me 3 Engines, 2 Trucks, and a Battalion(22 firefighters, 5 officers, and a chief). I'd probably also ask for at least one Foam Carrier with its associated Engine. Positioning of the rigs would be on the exposure 4 side of the structure.
Stretch a foam line, ensure the pumps are off and try to see what can get knocked down, if at all, with the built in extinguishing system before putting the line into operation. Maybe do another quick walkaround to look for victims. Definitely request EMS for potential victims. Not sure about special calling Haz Mat until I see how much product has been spilled.

Just a question out of curiosity, since I'm really not familiar with the area, or the politics. Could it possibly be that after TL-78 cost nearly $1 million or just over $1 million, that the town government is going to be a little more observant of what the FD is spec'ing out, hence the controversy we have??

The Maxi Water System evolved into the Satellite Water System in 1998. With Maxi-Water becoming Satellite 6. Sat-1/E-9, Sat-2/E-72, Sat-3/E-284, Sat-4/E-324, Sat-5/E-159, Sat-6/E-207. They respond on certain street, bridge, and special building boxes on the First Alarm(Bronx Terminal Market, Navy Yard, Manhattan Bridge), any foam operation, or where a Marine Company is operating at a land incident. Any All Hands in SI, and any multiple alarm in the city. If you look at where they are all quartered, they are within a short distance of a major highway, and can get to certain places quickly if needed.
Prior to 1998, the same rules were in effect, with the exception of an additional Satellite, associated Engine, and E-207/Maxi responding on the 3rd, and E-207 being Water Resource. The officer of E-207 would look at maps of the water mains, and find the nearest large diameter main to hook up to. They would advise the dispatcher while responding "Maxi-Water hook up point will be...wherever". Example: Box 1477 in Manhattan(W. 125 and Lenox Avenue) Satellite 1 on the 2nd Alarm(South Side of 125) Satellite 2, and 207/Maxi on the 3rd.
As for the Lime Green Engines, they were, 10,(Later given to E-4 and repainted) 41,42,45,46,(both repainted to red/white)58,65(ALF),73,85,94,236,277. 236 totalled theirs in a wreck in 1985 or 86 out on either Liberty, or 101 Avenue right over the Queens border. 263 got 85's after 85 was disbanded in 1986. 277's went to Corrections and was repainted blue, white and orange. That was in the early 90's I think.

I love driving, and despise flying. I will drive till my feet blister and hands callous on the wheel. I also don't look out for red light cameras when driving around Lancaster, CA. So I got caught and had to pay the ticket. Being slightly young and single and somewhat care free, and tired of getting the online and over the phone runaround from the LA County Superior Court system, I decided the best thing to do was go out there and pay the rassum frassum ticket. So, everybody's favorite Supervising Dispatcher flew out St. Patricks Day to the warm and lovely land of LA LA. Hopped in a nice rental(09 Chevy Cobalt, I WANT ONE!!!) and went to pay my fine. But wait, as I cruise into Lancaster, I also spy LA County FS 129. I had been here before on my last trip, but light was crappy and I only whacked out a couple of shots before it went to complete poop. Not this time. $446 later, just for the ticket, and here we go. Engine and Haz Mat 129 and Engine 329. I forget if 129 or the "3 Car" takes the Haz Mat. Both Engines are 2006 KME's and the Haz Mat is also a 2007 or 8 KME.

Ran further out back and Copter 16 was hanging around for the day. They have a copter here 24/7, I forget if it's an air squad, or just for firefighting duty.

I lucked out, as Quint 24 was finishing up some maintenance at the shops as well. This complex is pretty big actually. It's a fire station, training center, helispot, shops, and storage area for spares and reserve rigs.

Ran around back and got Water Tender 136.

Next stop, my second slice of the Orange..

I tend to be very traditional when it comes to apparatus paint jobs. This is a place where I make an exception because of how well I've been received. Always helps to have old family friends who are captains, and a chief who is a D-911 dispatcher(THANX KENNY!!!)
Yup, you guessed it, Rombout. So here we go, 62-2, 11, 12, 45 and the new 55 a BEAST of a rig.

And of course this behemoth..I LIKE IT!!!

And so, I bid adeiu to the Caddy Creme gang, knocked on my aunts door and nobody was home, or they heard I was coming and hid. Ran to Carmel to see some friends and headed on home. Not bad, 20 plus rigs in 4 hours. If there is anyone in the OC of NY, or up in Dutchess, or Westchester, or Putnam who wants me to come out. Let me know. I'll check my schedule and we'll work something out. As always, Enjoy!!!

So, I got a bit more time to kill and figured I'd hit Middletown. I've gone out drinking at a bar down the block from the main house enough times and promised myself I'd get over there eventually. After explaining who I was and that I was shooting pix not only for my personal collection, but to put up on this site(Shameless Plug, I know) out they came for me. Here's Engine 1, 1994 Pierce.

    JACKPOT!!!! Truck 1, 1989 Simon.LTI Tiller!!!

    Engine 2, Spartan RD Murray
    I like the White/Orange..

Truck 3, 112 foot Pierce Platform. I liked the little step that comes out when you open the door, nice touch.

Engine 6, 2009 KME. I looked at this at the Expo last year, but would rather get it out in the sun. Not my greatest shot, but I'm not a perfectionist when it comes to this stuff.

Engines 4 and 5, once again, not the greatest angles, and I have to figure out what setting on this new camera works best for rigs. I may even bring out the old one just to help out.

Next stop, two exits over the Newburgh/Beacon Bridge..

So after a nearly three hour ride from JFK to the Chateau(DAMN YOU NYC TRANSIT!!!) I spent Saturday giving the tour to the Lake Carmel Explorers. The least I can do for the department that got me my start in the fire service 23 years ago. It was then up to the special lady friends house, and upon awakening on a beautiful Sunday, what more can I do since I'm alone in the house?? You got it, out and about I go!!!
First stop, Port Jervis Engine 4, a 1999 ALF with a 54 foot Squrt. I will say this about the Port, they are quite colorful..

Next up, Engine 2, a 2007 KME Rescue Pumper. Turns out they had a job right across the street earlier Sunday AM.

    Rescue 823 1994 Simon/Saulsbury

Engine 5, 2005 Seagrave. I looked at this and started channeling Joe Pesci, the Metallic Mint Green...

Next time I get the ladder, Engine 1 and Engine 6.
Drove over the bridge into PA to seek out Matamoras and Westfall. Stopped at Westfall first.
Engine 39-390, I wanna say late 90's Pierce. Jeeper can fill in the details I hope.

Tanker 39, Big Friend. I didn't get specifics. Jeeper, you're up pal!!!

Headed back down Pennsylvania Avenue past the Turkey Hill(GREAT subs and Orange Iced Tea!!!) and down to Matamoras.
    Rescue 32, 2000 International with a Rescue 1 body

Tower 321 2002?? Pierce with an 85 foot platform.

    Next stop, Middletown!!

Regardless of the financial situation, kudos to the Chief for speaking his mind. HOWEVER, bad move for making statements like that at the scene of a fatal fire. There is a code of conduct that we in the emergency services have to follow. There are also other ways for making your feelings known. Like speaking as a citizen and not a member of a municipal agency.
I tend to follow free speech cases since I am a firm believer in it. I have no background in law either, just a little bit of common sense. There's a difference between free speech, and responsible speech. Maybe it's the fact that I'm exhausted, or just an interpretation of what the Founding Fathers meant.
You can say whatever you want, just use your head when you say it. For example, I have every right to say, "I don't like (a specific group of people)" However, I say that loudly in a crowd of those people in the middle of a holiday parade for those people, and I get my @$$ kicked, and a riot breaks out, I'm not being responsible. Bottom line, it's just like being a member of this board, Think before you speak.

We call them MARC's in the city, Marine Auxiliary Rescue Craft.

I gotta agree with Seth and Chief Flynn here. I actually got stopped one day going into my apartment, one of the locals thought the city paid for the meals Firefighters and Dispatchers ate. I explained that it came out of our pockets. I was up in Boston last month, and my buddys' truck company was operating a spare that looked like it was at least late 80's vintage. Maybe Joe SH!#ForBrains should look into the lousy apparatus these guys have to work with.

Nahh I want a fight with City Hall. We've proven they work. The Blackout, Flight 587(first reported alarm was a pull box) and Sept. 11th(ERS Box 8087 came in before the first phone call)
My job is being whittled away by this jerk at City Hall, I feel like lacing up the gloves.
  19. helicopper liked a post in a topic by JBE in When should apparatus and manpower be request to respond?
    This is a great topic.
Just from my limited experiences up that way, and taking into account some of my experiences in the city, as soon as more than one quality(caller reports visible fire, something substantial) call comes in reporting that structure, let the IC know, and get ready to put Mutual Aid on Standby. As soon as the IC pulls up and confirms it, re-tone the original FD for a confirmed fire and immediately tone out whatever mutual aid should be required(tankers, RIT/FAST, relocations).
That being said, I am a firm believer in having run cards, and/or the Chiefs of departments, regardless of who gets elected, etc going to the dispatch office and sitting down with either a senior supervisor, or the head honcho of said office and saying, this is what we want to do when this happens.
The only obstacle to that is, POLITICS!!!! One chief wants this department for a tanker, and doesn't want this one. My recommendation is every few years, the assignments get evaluated and adjusted as needed. Not something that changes with every new chief. Us Dispatchers have enough to deal with.
    My penny for the night.

PD Answers the boxes as well as FD. There will be times where you won't get an answer, or you'll get the recording from 911 if the phones are overburdened. I don't know how many they get.

We already do that. We could always start sending you out 24/7. That might also keep some firehouses open.
Even though it ends up being an MFA, it still counts as a run. More runs=keeping companies open.

How much more watered down does the test have to be?? I mean, there was a picture in one of the questions on the 2007 open competitive that said, "The fire chief wears a white helmet, find him in this picture." A drunken teenager could have passed that test. How much money was invested in the last test and recruitment?? You can lead a horse to water...
Has it ever occured to the Vulcan Society that maybe, just maybe, there is a majority of the minority who DON'T want the job?? Kindly refer to my last remark regarding the horse. How much further backwards does the city and the FDNY have to bend over, before someone says, "That's enough"???
I took the written exam 3 times, and missed a 4th due to my military service. Failed the physical the first and third times, blew off the second due to personal obligations(rassum frassum ex-wife!!!!) Now, I'm 36 and too old. I have nobody to blame but myself. I didn't put in the training and dedication required. Furthermore I have no intention of saying I was discriminated against, I just didn't put forth the effort. Maybe that's something the Vulcans should look into, making sure the people they so desparately want to get on the job PUT FORTH THE EFFORT!!!!
