A letter from Wassaic Fire Company Chief Scott Boardman:
Our company recently received some devastating news about one of our members, Jason Whaley. He has been in and out of the hospital for months with no clear diagnosis, has had multiple surgeries, and has missed a lot of work. This weekend, he was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
Jason has been a volunteer fireman for 18 years, first with JH Ketcham Hose Company in Dover Plains, NY and most recently with the Wassaic Fire Company. He is currently the Captain of the Wassaic Fire Company. He has served on various committees and makes most every call.
On July 27th, the Lantern Inn in Wassaic, NY and the Wassaic Project are co-hosting a benefit night for Jason. The events begin with A Cake Walk at 6:00pm at Maxon Mills. The band, Shadow Creek, will begin at 8:00pm at the Lantern Inn. There is a $5 cover charge. The Wassaic Fire Company will be selling food. We invite you to join us that evening to help us help one of our own. If you cannot join us, but would like to make a donation, donations can be made to the Wassaic Fire Company. Please indicate that your donation is for Jason Whaley.
We thank you, in advance, for your support.
    Sincerely,
    Chief Scott Boardman,
    Assistant Chief Kenny Elliott,
and the members of the Wassaic Fire Company

Have you ever spent eight hours, five days a week in a police car? Given all that has to be packed into a police car and the demanding operations they face, there aren't a whole lot of options. And, since these are a cop's "office" for eight hours a day, shouldn't they have at least a little bit of comfort? Granted that in today's police packages and with all the equipment jammed in them there isn't room for the cop anymore but I can't imagine how it would be in a smaller vehicle.
Municipalities don't pay $4.00 a gallon. They buy in bulk and don't pay taxes so the price is far less than that. Also, most budgets are constructed so that equipment/supplies (fuel) and personnel are different sections of the budget so you can't just say we're spending less on fuel and hiring more cops.

Like what, a Prius? What are they going to use that can still carry their gear, prisoners, pursue bad guys, and not give the officer clausterphobia?

Couple shots I took at the Airport Open House from last week. The gem of the trip was to see the new Crash Truck they acquired last year!

Not exactly! The Crash Truck is "unmanned" per se. The Line Service personnel (or at least some of them) are the ones that will take the vehicle in the event of an emergency, the same way a volunteer would stop their activity and respond to a station and pick up a rig, these guys do the same with the crash truck.
Also, for all emergencies on the airport, New Hackensack FD and/or Town of Wappinger Ambulance is dispatched.
Here is an old Exam Announcement for the job class:

A couple years back ('08) after coming back from a flight with a family friend they had a response drill with the old crash truck, and I caught some of it on camera. I stopped filming before the opened up the turrets and emptied the tank, sadly because I was not anticipating them doing so!!!

Soon they will replace "first due" with "pole position".............

Most people see EMS as a luxury rather than necessity. Everyone thinks they can control their own medical emergencies. No one is under the illusion that they can control their own house fire. The best example of the average person's priorities is personal finance. People time and again chose to give up their health insurance before forgoing the annual vacation when money gets tight.

That's easy. The direction of that topic of discussion would depend entirely on whether he was paid, or not.

At approx 2220hrs on 5/14/12, NYSP and DCSO responded to a reported Burglary In Progress/Home Invasion. One of the initial arriving NYSP entered the residence, encountered one suspect with a sawed off rifle who assaulted the Trooper WITH the rifle.
Suspect became human Swiss Cheese and pronounced dead on the scene. Four other suspects caught after a manhunt, arrested, and arraigned.
Good riddance, God bless the responding officers, glad they are all ok. I am proud to work and know many of the members of those agencies that responded.

I happened to not be listening to my scanner for once, and missed out on the whole shebang til I heard about it this AM. Was not sure if any other agencies were involved, as the interviews and news only mentioned NYSP and DSCO. Certainly not holding out on my end, always glad to hear when agencies work together. We are pretty lucky up here that most, if not all PD agencies work very well together.
If only the Fire Departments could get their act together and do the same thing.....
