  1. They don't carry much on the rig. They have a big steamer in the back, think of the small steam cleaning units you get in the store. This units takes up pretty much the entire back of the truck. When the temp drops to low, they will staff the units. The go around and will thaw out hydrants and pump out the water.
  2. Station 15 is just a joke.. There is no 15.. Ridge Hill is just storage/office space for Special Operations. They keep alot of the spare/special stuff up there. It's near Home Depot and is off limits to the public.
  3. As far as the court/legal issue. I have had photos requested by a law firm for legal reasons. The photos were not my photos but someone from my site, I took care of all the contacts for him. Not wanting to have him dragged into court, I looked up and contacted some lawyers. What we ended up doing in the end was selling the copies of the prints to the firm to cover his costs of the prints, etc. Not sure what ever happened with the photos or if they were used in any matter. If the photos had been requested by a FD/PD. I would give them a copy on CD with a strict statement on not reprinting them or using them for something other then the intended reasons.
  4. The loops comming off the leather boots was a defect on a lot of them. When FDNY started going to the leathers from rubber, almost all of the boots had the loops pull off. Haven't noticed this as a problem in recent years, my take a beating and the havn't pulled off yet. As far as the toes that have a new design out, which has teeth on top of the toe to prevent them from breaking down as quick.
  5. This is a broadband network they are looking to build, not a voice radio system. They want to build the system for public saftey and use part of it for commerical profit gain.
  6. It's a small mini pumper.. Here is some info on it. It's a Ford two door cab. Roll up doors on the box. Small hose bed on top behind the cab. Rear mounted pump. No light bar on the roof. The keep it at the "Fire Station". May not look like a Firehouse to us, but they do have a "Fire Station" on the grounds of the UN. Once again it's in a secure location so you will never see it.
  7. Cpage.. The UN does not have to meet code... This is also the case with many buildings in the City. World Trade Centers were one of them. Another was the Schomberg Plaza Fire. Federal funded building, didn't have to meet city code. Resulted in many deaths. As far as the UN Fire Brigade, they have a very good operations. Most of the security Staff are trained EMT's and Firefighters. They have full gear with SCBA's and even have a fire Engine on location. The Fire Engine is in a location that would never be visable to the public and would be very rare to see it in public view. UN staff takes care of the building on a daily basis. When needed FDNY goes in and will back them up. FDNY also provides Fire Attack Teams during the GA and foot response teams during some events.
  8. I am back to work Tuesday night. I will get the name and post it when I can. The one that seems the closest is the Firehooks version.
  9. It's the offical health club because, they gave/give free access to the people taking the test. From a 2003 Press Release "New York Sports Clubs to donate over $4 million in services for FDNY recruitment initiative" New York Sports Club $39/Month Memberships for FDNY!!! 10. CTFF.. Those are not the gloves.. I have seen one of the pairs in use. I don't have the name, would have to get it and I could take some photos. All I can say is compared to the Blue FDNY gloves we are using, these new style gloves are great... The ones I saw are already NFPA approved.
  11. As far as the 800mhz I-Call and I-Tac I know that FDNY EMS has it in the 800mhz radios. The have it setup with I-Call I-TAC 1 I-TAC 2 I-TAC 3 I-TAC 4 All on reapeaters. and also Simplex I-Call TA I-TAC 1 TA I-TAC 2 TA I-TAC 3 TA I-TAC 4 TA
  12. In the city we carry very heavy 3" hose which can hold upto 700psi along with a range of adapters and fittings which also can hold 700psi. It's all for standpipe operations and nothing else. As far as your holding a nozzel, some europe depts have hi-press pumps and use small hose like a pressuer washer.
  13. Okay, I have a question. Working on a FDNY Hi-Press Engine, I am wondering how the Westchester units use the 3rd stage and what for? Also what kind of safety steps are used when the 3rd stage is active?
  14. Hi-Press Engines are 1000gpm pumpers but have three stages. They also use a larger engine something like a Cat-60 I think. They have 3" hose with painted white butts which can hold upto 700psi and pump upto the 110th floor. 2000gpm are all about moving lots of water..
  15. If you are taking the test in Jan, you will have a lot of time before the medical.. It could be a year or more until you would need to take the eye test.
  16. Ok.. Still fixing the nycfire.net site.. But we do have some new audio for you. http://www.nycfire.net/node/190
  17. If it was a mack.. It would have to be a Tower Ladder.. There are almost no Mack Engines around, I think there is just one 2000gpm pumper left and a few foam rigs. Spares and Reserves are all seagraves.
  18. There are a lot of Chief's Helmets out there, which have turned yellow. I mean very yellow. The newer stlye ones don't stay white very long and after time they will start to turn yellow.
  19. New test is now the CPAT test and is pass fail..
  20. If you fail the Eye test you are allowed to go get the Eye surgery and go back and try again. I don't think this rule has changed.
  21. Heard about them trying to do something with a building down on Nep somtime back. More recently I have heard that it's a no go..
  22. LPFIRE, As far as numbers, it's anyones guess. As of right now we are way over staffed.. Many firehouses have double and even triple groups. As well there are tours in which the staffing is over 50extra people. So if you asked most people, they would say that the hiring should slow down, but it has yet to do so.

  24. The Med test is the following Vitals- BP, Pulse, Weight Eye test - Yes that little machine thing Lung test - Check for Lung capacity and Asthma Hearing Test EKG Blood work - with Urine sample and Drug test. Should also be a chest xray. Stair Master. I cant remember the time frame. But it's something along the lines of the test. You get one warm up, get off and rest, then back on again. Depending on your Age you can't have your heart rate go over the targer number. I think thats all of them, it's like 7 stations.
