Great news!  We should also take notice that the Port Chester firefighters were laid-off and not fired.  Fired would equate to a termination of employment (which has a negative impact on one's employment record) whereas lay-off would be for a reduction of work (and has no negative impact on one's employment record). The only reason I bring it up is that you never know who reads these postings; we want to make sure that the Brothers have every opportunity to obtain gainful employment and don't have to explain that they weren't fired to a prospective employer.

Consider how it'll be interpreted when a chief sits on a witness stand, testifies under oath that his first due aerial or rescue could't respond because it was three towns away at parade or wet down.  Compare that to the testimony of a chief who's same equipment wasn't available because of the "nobler" reasons.  It's a lot better justification to be unavailable because of training or mutual aid rather than squirting water on the neighbors new rescue truck.  "We couldn't get there to extricate that family from their head on collision, because we were waiting for the trophies be announced at the convention parade!"

As a starting point.....Change the name of the thread to VOLUNTEER VS. CAREER.

This entire issue was manufactured by a small group of completely incompetent volunteer fools wearing Fire Chief costumes from the Port Chester FD.

Sorry if the truth may hurt for some of the pro-volunteer carrot snappers on this board, but this story is going to sting for awhile (as it should).

Contrary to the claim of one "dinosaur" here......This has everything to do with career and volunteer relationships and the absolute jealousy that a few complete losers from PCFD attempted to enact upon 8 unionized firefighters who did not conform to their failing regime.

Speaking out earned them being thrown out.

Except, the labor world is a bit harder to con than the archaic volunteer fiefdoms that these pieces of trash have matriculated through.

    Open check book PCFD.

    Elections have consequences.

A driver/chauffeur is a position or assignment on a crew, not a job title..which is what you said about the Career members of TMFD. Not sure if you an axe to grind with them, nor is it any of my business, nor do I care. In most combo departments the career personnel do operate the apparatus, but that's not the limit to their duties. Show up on the scene of a working fire at 11am on Monday at a combo dept, most incidents will have one career FF outside as a MPO, while making a hydrant, monitoring fire conditions, or the laundry list of other jobs that need to be done on the scene. Being done by the MPO, all while he's keeping an eye on his gauges. Yes, I know the MPO is supposed to be glued to the panel, but with insufficient manpower, and the balance of the on shift members working inside, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. The days of "oh the paid guys just drive" have long since passed. But I guess the archaic, dinosaur way of thinking is still around.

    Seriously?
You're not even close, as Healz stated, there is no such title in any Westchester county FD.
The Town of Mamaroneck Professional Firefighters are just like any other firefighting job, they are tested both written and physically, academy trained by PROFESSIONALS, and are titled as a firefighter upon their graduation. The entrance exam isn't classified as a "paid driver" but rather as "firefighter" I urge you to read the job description on the WC gov website and maybe rethink your post/thoughts about this. It's a disrespectful, derogatory term used by people who are more than likely jealous that they never took/could pass the exam, or are threatened by professional firefighters education and knowledge of the career path they chose.
With that being said, respect to those who can see further than their nose, and work alongside the career members of combo depts without any drama, jealousy or anger towards them.
Disclaimer: I am not in any way shape or form affiliated with or represent the interests or opinions of the Town of Mamaroneck Professional FF's

So you notify the locals of where these "Brothers" work, and let their union deal with them..............My union doesn't really get on guys for volunteering, but they make a HUGE point that you do NOT volunteer in a combo dept. where there are IAFF members!

You don't have to go to Detrot to find a scab, they are all around Port Chester. Career guys from other jobs close buy Volunteering when our job is suffering with low manpower down 50 % and soon to 60 % and now stealing our Fire Watch. Brotherhood is allmost gone

Bulls*&t. I don't anyone (especially those who could find themselves in this position on any given day) who'll accept this as the new reality. I don't want to do more with less. I want to do what's necessary with the appropriate resources. I'm getting tired of this fight every spring. Firehouse closures....pensions ruining our economy...B.S!
Why are pension contributions up? Because of dwindling returns on the city's investments. Well....they should have planned better for a downturn in the market. Perhaps they shouldn't have said, "we're doing so well on our returns we can skip our annual contributions". I never got to skip my contributions. My pension didn't get any better when they were making money hand over fist in the market. They want it both ways. Make money with our money when times are good and take more money from us when times are bad. They made bad bets and now the public has to buck-up in the form of more tax dollars to pension payments. They mismanaged money and want to blame unions and pensions for teacher lay-offs and firehouse closings.
They made agreements with the unions that they could afford. They played fast and loose in the open market and took a beating. We didn't benefit when they were up, so why should we pay when they're down.
Wouldn't it be nice to see politicians take the blame for their mistakes? Guess that'll be the day....

Capt, as always bro, you are spot on. Its just easier for many folks to blame Unions.
    1210671...THANK YOU!
Moderators, is there any way we could possibly split this thread? A man, a human being, has died during the course of his job. It was a terrible tragedy and just plain sucks.
Can we keep a thread as a condolence page possibly?
Guys and gals, you wanna talk semantics or knock the Unions as some of you insist on doing? Lets have some more class and keep it seperate, ok?
There are soooo many things i want to talk about, clear up and give my thoughts on. However, this is a public forum and i must be careful as this is my job.
I just love how everybody has become Sanitation experts and feel they know what should be done in every community. I do this for a LIVING, it is my CAREER and has been for over 9 years now.
I said it earlier, it is a dangerous job and if its one you havent done, you have no clue as to what its all about.
Firefighting is a dangerous job. Are some of you going to start blaming the Unions the next time a Fireman is injured or killed on the job? Should we tell Fireman that they are no longer allowed to enter a burning building because its unsafe? Of course not, that would be absurd.
Again, RIP to my fellow Teamster. Thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and the Peekskill community.
