The big down side to mergers is a neighborhood can go from having 3 patrol cars to 1 or none depending on the crime going on in the dept they merged with. I rather pay a few bucks more in taxes to keep my town pd

In this post anonymity has been used for a reason, as it is in the past, and not to detract from the point of this post.
I noticed on the yonkers tribune this morning, which for those of you who do not know, follows the coy and yfd matter very closely, and noticed that a negative post here on emtbravo regarding yfd was splashed across more than one article on the yonkers tribune in the comment section, with a preface explaining, look at what this person thought of a medical call with yfd. I personally do not see any evidence it was the original poster here on emtbravo himself who posted to that website, however, I would say 90% of members on emtbravo if not more, have or are currently involved in either police, fire, or ems and since you have to be a member to view posts, it is unfortunately probable, that the other person here on emtbravo who has been copying this post is mos. Regardless, this type of behavior and attempt to undermine the yfd is weak, extremely dissapointing, and leaves me shaking my head vigorously.
I do not and have not ever worked for yfd or empress, however as a resident of yonkers I do follow this matter. In a neutral view and my own opinion, it is clear that all backs have been turned against yfd despite attempts to convince me otherwise. I have yet to understand any reason at all why this is the case and why no one will reach out to them, all the while they move forward with dismantling in less than 12 months the cfr program; a cornerstone of public safety in yonkers that has been in place for over 20 years. I can never turn my back with so much left unanswered.

If this in fact is happening please report it through the proper channels. The Public Safety Dispatchers are a dedicated group. They are civilians and they are supervised by the Yonkers Police Department. The YFD administration is unaware of this and frankly, I doubt it is happening, but if you have knowledge of such occurences please report it rather than make allegations on here.

I'm just curious how many of you people commenting on this thread are even from Yonkers? Why does this matter, you may ask? Well, TO ME, its matter quite a bit, because we, the residents see and experience the difference between Empress and the YFD. I have to admit, I'm very shocked by most of the comments on this thread. These firefighters, like many of you claim to be (professional or volly), are fighting for their jobs, lives and traditions of a fire department, especially one as traditional and proud as the Yonkers FD. Were any of you at the city council meetings listening the higher ups of Empress either lie or completely stutter over the facts? I'm willing to bet NO, you werent. But you dare accuse the union members of "sensationalism" or using "dramatics", or heres the best one, "I don't even go to Yonkers for anything, so I personally couldn't care less how this whole situation plays out." I mean, WOW!!! Spoken like a true A-hole who really doesnt care about his fellow man...kinda contradictory for someone who works in emergency servies, wouldnt you say?
I was a proud city cop working many times with FD members...and despite the stereotypical butting of heads between the two agencies, we worked quite well, with us normally arriving first on scene, them shortly after, and EMS minutes, sometimes many minutes later! Thats not a knock on EMS, its simply a fact! But rather than support this proud department and go after the corrupt politicians trying to save a buck for their own christmas bonus, you post websites showing how Firefighters arent even as important as they use to be, or how they arent worth the money. I bet you also agree that this city has too many cops right? But when you wait 3 minutes for a cop to show up, you probably cry that it took him too long and you'd wonder why. Sounds to me like you are a tad bit jealous or just disgruntled. Yonkers has become the third most populous city in the state. This is a serious department with serious work, where lives are lost.
End of the day, this isnt about "taking jabs", but simply about men and women who are fighting for the very same thing you'd be fighting for if you were in their shoes.
I dont post normally on this site, and I definitely dont like to stir things up, but I'm just baffled by these remarks coming from other emergency service workers.

I heard a really heartbreaking report this morning. About the parents, the ones who could not find their kids or who heeded officials pleas' and went to a local firehouse rather than to the school.
They were gathered in a large room and one-by-one police officers reunited them with their kids. Only after a while there were no more reunions. The parents left were then taken to a smaller, more private room. Officers then verified, by various means, that the children confirmed dead were the children of these parents. And then they were faced with the very difficult task of having to tell the Moms and Dads the horrible news.
When my wife and I heard this earlier today I admit we both cried. We'll say a prayer for them that's for sure.
They did assign a state trooper to each set of parents to give whatever assistance you could give someone in that situation.
    Absolute horror.

VMFD actually was called to that fire. They had an engine called to the scene, that encountered water supply issues. I believe their ladder was also on standby.
Their are decisions that are made by the chief of a department both during the preplanning and at the scene of a fire that are the responsibility of the chief and the chief alone as he becomes the person responsible. Some of these decisions include how to fight the fire, and what resources to use to figth that fire. When we give someone that responsiblity we must also give them that authority.
I think as has been reiterated many times in these posts is that if we want all resources considered equal by chief officers we have to ensure that they actually are. This includes many of the points brought here such as training, response time, manning, equipment and I'm sure a few other items.
I think one of the starting points for this would be to have the county take over all in service training in addtiion to the formal training given now. In that manner the training could be tracked and standardized.

I for one think it is GREAT!
Look at the press on this whole thing - the initial "feel good" story - and now this latest twist that ACTUALLY shows the WORLD, what those in emergency services experience every day, The manipulations, the milking of the system, and how we grow "desensitized and cold to it all".
Welcome to the real world, as seen through the eyes of Emergency Responders World....ain't it effing grand?

As much a I hate to admit it this is true. EMS is treated like a second class citizen in the FDNY but it is still better then when we were under HHC ( based on what I've been told). There are some old timers who swear up and down on HHC but the majority say it's better under FDNY. We've gotten better pay/ benefits, as well as a much better budget for EMS. The ambulances used to be barebones you were lucky to be part 800. Now most of our buses are overstocked and the stations have plenty of extra to restock. However as I mentioned you are a second class citizen. Many people get frustrated that when EMS does something they refer to you as " FDNY members " or " Firefighters" and very rarely mention EMS. Also the changing our of supervisors mentality has changed drastically in even the 4 years I've been there. I wish our bosses were like the bosses for the Firefighters, but ours would rather write charge packets, for the same thing they were doing a year ago before they got their bar. This is where the whole Sandy thing comes into play. Unlike what the Commissioner says units were ordered to stay at their cross street locations ( not in shelter) during the storm, and station supervisors were ordered to stay in quarters until the water was so many many people lost their cars because it was too late to evacuate. Had these same Chiefs been out in the field ( there is usually only 1 to 2 EMS chiefs on at night and they're basically ghosts who only appear when something big happens) they would have seen how fast the conditions deteriorated and how much danger the crews were in. Putting the crews in danger jeopardized the citizen's we are here to protect because we became focused on trying to save each other and therefore took longer to respond to emergencies. Many member unnecessarily lost possessions and their vehicles because of the lack of preplanning and the lack of orders issued. This is a job to be proud of, and a honorable job where people look up to you. However I believe it is unacceptable to sit back and simply take abuse which can endanger you, this isn't a rant by someone who is burnt out, this is a rant by someone who loves his job however wish it was managed much much differently.

I only hope the Bronx prosecutors will put the two perps away for a long time.
Good to know Officer Marcano is recovering and out of the hospital. That hospital bed didn't look very comfortable.

Officer Ivan Marcano of the NYPD's Transit District 12 was promoted to Detective this morning in a bedside promotion ceremony with Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. PO Marcano was off duty when he observed 3 males robbing a man on street an took action. Officer Marcano was shot once in the chest, but was still able to pursue the perpetrators, firing his weapon weak handed, while his strong hand was applying pressure to his wounds. I work in the same command with Ivan, he is resting comfortably in the hospital, and is expected to make a complete recovery. He should be released from the hospital shortly. Watching the video and hearing him talk about the action first hand is incredible. You can see in the video how he reverted to the training we have received to take cover, change positions if needed, and never give up the fight even if injured. Great Job Ivan, I am sure the Firearms and Tactics Section will use your story and video to help train future officers.

Yes, they canceled the game. What's your point?
There was a volatile situation with the potential for even more problems and injuries and they mitigated it by canceling the game. This is not the first time nor will it be the last time that high school sports is impacted by the actions of some troublemakers.
Hopefully they allow the game to be played at a later date with no fans or fanfare at a neutral site. Just the players, coaches, and refs so the game can be played by those who were not involved and enjoy their sport. This has been done before and will probably continue to be done when problems like this arise.

I hope it isn't anything like 'Rescue Me'. Essentially I felt that 'Rescue Me' was an embarassment to the fire service. It portrayed the main characters as completely disfunctional, sub par human beings except for those times when they answered an alarm. Otherwise in or away from the station, they were a--holes.
Not a single character I would want a young member to emulate.

There's another thread about this incident. There's a lot of hot button issues too. But if you read the Times' article carefully it seems to me there's some deeper issues at work here.
For instance the salaries the new County force will be paid.
Officials are giving a lot of publicity to the fact the County force will be able to "afford" to provide more officers. But it doesn't look like they'll save any money. It looks like what they're really doing is getting the county financially involved. Getting the county to shoulder some of the burden Camden can no longer handle.
The new force will be about 400 officers. Camden used to have the same size force, but they laid off officers because of money problems only to discover -- if you cut through all the rhetoric -- the present force is too small to be effective.
I think the underlying issue here is the fact the City of Camden is broke.
So this really seems to be a way to shift some of the financial burden from the city to the county, something that usually triggers a lot of political protest from taxpayers outside the city area. I think what this really is about is scapegoating the Camden police to camouflage the shift in financial responsibility from Camden taxpayers to county taxpayers.
If the state is turning their back on Camden it would seem the only avenue open to them is the county.
It's a very disturbing picture because there's probably a lot of other Camdens out there.
We give millions and millions of dollars to equip and train police departments in places like Haiti and Iraq but no one wants to step up and say a city like Camden needs help. I'm sure there are many hard-working, law-abiding, tax-paying residents of Camden. I think they deserve a lot better. And so does the Camden PD.
